Teaching procedures and ways 教学过程与方式 Step I Revision and lead-in Greet the class and check the homework. Ask several students to read their notes. Review “Would you mind ...?” structure. T: Would you mind turning down the TV? I have to do my homework. S1: Sorry, I’ll do it right away. S2: Could you help me with my math? S3: Yes, do I have to turn off the TV? S4: No, you don’t have to. Talk about the pictures in 1a on page 55. First point to the pictures and help students to make the meanings clear. T: Look at Picture 1 and say something about it. S1: His hair style is terrible. His barber gave him a terrible haircut. T: What’s a barber? You learned it several weeks ago. Do you still remember it? S: A barber’s job is to cut men’s hair. T: Great! Now, Picture 2. S2: The boy is wearing a new coat. But the store clerk gave him the wrong size. T: Picture 3? S3: He is waiting for his friends. He looks worried. His friends are late. T: Picture 4? S4: The boy is seeing a movie. The movie is terrible. T: Picture 5? S5: The boy is angry. Because the waitress brought him the wrong food. T: Picture 6? S6: The man is writing, but the pen doesn’t work. Step II Groupwork (1b, P55) Ask students to talk about what they have complained about. Write all the ideas on the blackboard. T: What have you ever complained about? I’d like to collect some of your complaints. S1: I bought a pen last week, but it doesn’t work. S2: My barber gave me a terrible haircut. S3: My neighbor always turns his radio up. S4: The waiter brought me the wrong food. S5: There is always much homework to do. S6: The store clerk gave me the wrong size shoes. Then help students rank the items from the most to the least annoying. Different students may have different views. Step III Listening (2a, 2b, P55) T: Listen and number the sentences in the order you hear them in activity 1a. Write number 1 in front of the picture that shows the people in that conversation. Do the same for conversations number 2 and number 3. Check the answers. T: Now, look at the chart in 2b and read the three column headings. And discuss what each heading means. Then I’ll play the tape again. Listen and write the places, problems and solutions in the chart below. Play the tape again, stop for answers. Then ask some students to show their answers. T: First, what are the three places? S1: They are clothing store, restaurant and store. T: What about other two problems? S2: Got the wrong size shirt, got a pen that doesn’t work. T: Please read the solutions you have written down. S3: Will get a smaller shirt, will get some French fries. Step IV Pairwork (2c, P55) This activity provides oral practice using the target language — making requests. T: I will ask two students to role play the requests in activity 2c. You two please! S1: This shirt is too big. Would you mind giving me a smaller one? S2: Not at all. Here you are. T: Look back at the problems in 2b. Work with your partner, role play similar requests about the problems. Ask several pairs of students to say their conversations to the class. A sample conversation: A: May I help you? B: I bought this pen here, but it’s not good. A: What’s the problem? B: It doesn’t work. Would you mind giving me a new one? A: Not at all. Here you are. B: Thanks. Language tips: solution n. a way of solving a problem or dealing with a difficult situation Both sides are trying to find a peaceful solution. There are no simple solutions to the problem of pollution. What’s your solution to this problem? order v. to ask for food or a drink in a restaurant, bar etc Anne ordered another glass of wine.
