Ss: Mice.
T: Correct. They can live both in the air and in the water. They have hard backs.
Ss: Turtles.
T: It has eight legs. They live in their nets in the tree or on the wall.
Ss: Spiders.
T: Correct. They jump when they walk. Carrots are their favorite food.
Ss: Rabbits.
T: Correct. They often wear beautiful green clothes. They’re so clever and funny. They can “speak” like our human beings.
Ss: Parrots.
T: Correct. They often eat and sleep. They’re usually fat. We eat their meat.
Ss: Pigs.
T: You’ve got it. You did very well. Here is a picture. What’s it?
Show a picture of pot-bellied pig.
Ss: Pig.
T: Yeah. It has a very big belly. (point to its belly) So it’s called pot-bellied pig. Pot-bellied means “fat”. It’s very popular these days. We can find many toys like that.
Show more pictures like the following.
T: Lovely? How cute they are! So the pot-bellied pig is the trendiest kind of pet these days.
trendiest means “the most popular”.
Step II Reading
T: Read the article about pot-bellied pig. Then answer the two questions above the article.
Read the questions for the students. And explain two new words.
advantage means “good points” of (doing) sth.
disadvantage means “bad points” of (doing) sth.
T: Just now, one of you said he kept a pet dog in his house. He said “It can make you happy. But sometimes it’s too noisy. And it makes the room dirty.” So here, “It can make you happy” is the advantage of keeping a pet dog. While “It’s too noisy. And it makes the room dirty.” is the disadvantage of keeping a pet dog. Do you understand?
Read the words for the Ss to follow.
When Ss finish reading the article, call two or more Ss to answer the Qs.
Check the answers.
perfect: without fault; excellent
perfect weather
Nobody is perfect.
Step III Writing (3b, 3c, P64)
T: Look at the picture. What’s the animal?
Ss: A hamster.
T: What do you know about hamsters? Can you say something about them? You can use notes here.
Call a student to read the notes and explain the new word for the Ss.
clean: not dirty; having clean habits
Cats are clean animals.
Then ask a student to read the beginning of the article in the book.
T: Now finish writing the article. Use the phrases on this list. You can add your own ideas, too.
Ss finish the writing on their own.
Ask a student to read his or her completed article to the class.
T: What kind of animal do you like? What do you know about it? Can you write an article about your favorite animal for a magazine? Remember not to write the name of the animal you are writing about in your articles.
Ss write their articles on their own.
Sample article:
This pet is unusual. It’s easy to take care of and it talks. It wears beautiful clothes. It’s clever and funny. It’s also very friendly. If you meet it and say hello to it, it will say hello to you, too. How smart it is! You will like it.
Step IV Game
Ask several Ss to read their articles to the rest of the class and let them guess what animals they are writing about. e.g:
A student reads his article to the class: This pet is unusual. It’s easy to take care of and it talks. It wears beautiful clothes. It’s clever and funny. It’s also very friendly. If you meet it and say hello to it, it will say hello to you, too. How smart it is! What is it?
Ss: Is it a parrot?
S1: Yes, it is.
Step V Debating (4, P64)
T: Is it good to keep pets in an apartment? Yesterday, I asked you to find out some information about it? Have you done that?
Ss: Yes.
T: Well done. Now I’ll divide you into two groups. Group one is for the opinion: It’s good to keep pets in an apartment. You are the pros (正方). Group two is for the opposite opinion: “It’s bad to keep pets in an apartment.” You’re the cons (反方). Welcome five students to be the judges. You have three minutes to get ready.
Ss work in groups to discuss the topic.
Three minutes later.
T: Are you ready? Okay. Let’s begin! The pros, please.
P: We think it’s good to keep pets in an apartment because pets can be our friends. For example, a dog can watch the door for people. A cat can catch mice and a parrot can talk like you. What’s more, it will be more colorful and much funnier to take care of pets. You will not feel lonely with them. So we say it’s good to keep pets in an apartment.
T: Then the cons, please.
C: We don’t think it’s good to keep pets in an apartment. As we know, taking care of pets is really boring and makes people tired. Besides this, pets can make our rooms untidy and dirty. It’s even terrible that they make so much noise when you want to be quiet or you are sleeping. Sometimes they can make you sick for they may carry some diseases on them. Do you think it’s good to keep pets in a apartment?
If students like, give them a chance for free debating.
T: Which ideas do you agree? Which team is the winner? Who are the best debaters? The judges, please tell us the result and make some comments on their speech.
J: It’s really hard for us to say which group is the winner because they really did very well. However, we think the cons did better because they cut the point exactly and they expressed their opinion from different aspects. So we say the cons is the winner.
T: Congratulations! Actually everybody did a wonderful job. I think you’ve learned a lot from the debating and I believe you will do better later! Thank you!
Step VI Homework
T: We know the mascots (吉祥物) of the 2008 Olympics are the Five Friendlies (福娃). Before they became the mascots, there were some other candidates (候选者). S2: Chinese Dragon is quiet traditional and it’s the totem (图腾) of China. But it’s not international.
S3: Pandas live only in China. They’re the treasure of our country. And they’re so cute that all the people in the world love them.
S4: Chinese Tiger is athletics and powerful. But it has been used in 1998 Olympics.
T: Wonderful. I’m surprised you know so much. Now the 2008 Olympics is around the corner. And the Chinese are preparing for it. How are they preparing for it?
Ss: Many Chinese people are learning English.
T: Right. Of course, there are many ways of learning English. Let’s read an article about learning English by singing English songs.
Step II Pre-reading
Get Ss prepared for reading by dealing with activities 1a and 1b on page 66.
T: How many English songs can you think of? Which are your favorite songs? How can singing English songs help your English? Now work in pairs and talk about the answers. Make a list of your answers. 2 minutes for you.
2 minutes later. Check the answers.
T: How many English songs can you think of?
S: ABC Song, Jingle Bells, Merry Christmas, Yesterday Once More, My Heart Will Go On and Big Big World. Yesterday Once More is our favorite.
T: Can you hum it?

S: First, We can learn some new words. Second, we can learn some beautiful sentences. Third, we can learn some idioms.
T: That’s right. Now let’s read the article and find out how we can improve English by singing English songs.

Show the following questions on the board.
Qs: 1. How many singers entered the contest?
2. Why did Jiang Mei win?
3. What are other ways to learn English?
T: Now you are given 2 minutes to read the article. Keep the questions on the board in mind while you are reading. Read it quickly and try to find answers to them.
2 minutes later.
T: OK, now I’d like to hear your answers to the questions on the board. The first question, any volunteer?
S1: Twenty-four young singers from across China entered the contest.
T: Right. What about the second one?
S2: Singing English songs made Jiang Mei more interested in English and studying English helped her win the prize.
T: That’s it. And the third one?
S3: Watching English movies, reading English books and even making friends with a native speaker of English.
T: Good. Skimming is an important reading strategy. It means reading the whole text quickly, to get the main idea of the contest. It is important not to stop to look up words. I hope you can make use of it in your later reading.
Then let Ss do careful reading and deal with activity 3a.
T: Read the article again. This time read carefully for specific information. Judge if the statements in 3a are true, false or not mentioned in the reading. Look through the statements before reading. 3 minutes for you.
After Ss finish reading, check the answers. For the false ones, let them correct them.
T: What difficulties do you have in understanding the article?
Explain some language points that Ss may raise.
too ... to 太……而不能……
He is too old to see that tree clearly.
这一句型可用so ... that ... 代替,而that 后的从句多用否定句。
He is so old that he can’t see that tree clearly.
encourage sb. to do sth. 鼓励某人做某事
The teacher encouraged us to read more English.
Step IV Post-reading
T: Now let’s learn about the reading strategy in this unit. It is “summarize”. Another reading strategy is to summarize. To understand the important ideas from the text, we must “summarize”. Do this by answering “who, what, where, why” questions as you read. Now can you find out the four wh-s from the reading? Read through the article again and make some notes.
Then let Ss write a summary according to their notes.
T: Now close your books. Write a summary of the reading using no more than 100 words. Five minutes for you.

Listening to English radio programs or watching English TV shows;
Making friends with native speakers;
Reading English novels or cartoons

T: Hosting the Olympics is a great thing for our Chinese people. Many people want to do something for it. Do you want to be volunteers? What do you want to do for it? Think it over and write down your dreams.
Sample dreams:
I want to take care of the athletes.
I want to work in the Olympic Village.
I want to be a tour guide or a translator.
T: Now tell your partner your ideas and use the advice language given to advice each other how to achieve this dream.
