A new life on the university campus
I am a freshman of the English Department at Peking University. Life at the university is so exciting and challenging.
There are two campuses for our university: one is for freshmen and sophomores and the other is for juniors, seniors and graduate students. My campus is located on the outskirts of the city, which is a new one, very peaceful and free from the hustle and bustle of a metropolis. It is free from all sorts of distractions and diversions that most city dwellers find it hard to escape or ignore.
We have a three-day orientation programme about campus life for entering students, including campus tour in which we can visit libraries, classroom buldings, language labs, the multimedia resource centre, computer support services, the student club, and the sports stadium. We freshmen have access to all these resources and technical facilities on a regular basis. They are open to all students. As a matter of fact, we’re encouraged to make the most of the libraries and technical support services on the campus.
We all live on campus, as the school rules say that no freshmen should live off campus during the weekdays, unless the university authorities give permission. We prefer to eat in school cafeterias because there is a variety of foods on the menu, which changes every day. Besides, the food service is much better than that of most secondary schools. For one thing, our campus cafeterias are under the management of a professional food service company with an annually-renewable contract.
Being an English major, we have to speak English with our fellow students and English teachers most of the time. We are expected to speak English with all out English teachers whatever courses they teach. We’re also encouraged to speak English in the dorm area as much as possible. We are not quite used to this ‘English only’ environment, though. Anyway, we’re all trying very hard. It always takes us time to adjust to a new environment. We’re given English lectures and talks which cover a variety of topics. We’re encouraged to attend the free discussion session following each lecture or presentation. Most of the lectures are given by native-speakers, so at the beginning I have much difficulty in figuring out much of what they say. But I know they are very good for students majoring in English.
I like my life in the university and I experience a lot. I will try my best to make my life colorful.

The main events of Dave’
Since 1989, Dave Thomas, who died at age 69, was one of the most recognizable faces on TV. He appeared in more than 800 commercials for the hamburger chain named for his daughter. ‘As long as it works,’ he said in 1991, ‘I’ll continue to do those commercials.’
Even though he was successful, Thomas remained troubled by his childhood. ‘He still won’t let anyone see his feet, which are out of shape because he never had proper-fitting shoes,’ Wendy said in 1993.In 1932 he was born to a single mother, he was adopted as a baby by Rex and Auleva Thomas of Kalamazoo in Michigan when he was six weeks old. After Auleva died when he was 5, Thomas spent years on the road as Rex traveled around seeking construction work. ‘He fed me,’ Thomas said, ‘and if I got out of line, he’d beat me.’ ‘When I found out I was (adopted), I didn’t want to talk about it, and as I talked to people as I grew older… I got really a lot of encouragement.’ When he was 12 years old, Thomas started working at a barbecue restaurant in Knoxville, Tenn. Moving out on his own at 15, Thomas worked, first as a waiter, in many restaurants. But he had something much better in mind. ‘I thought if I owned a restaurant,’ he said, ‘I could eat for free.’ A 1956 meeting with Harland Sanders led Thomas to a career as the manager of a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant that made him a millionaire in 1968.
In 1969, after breaking with Sanders, Thomas started the first Wendy’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers, in Columbia, Ohio, which set itself apart by serving made-to-order burgers. With 6,000 restaurant worldwide, the chain now makes $6 billion a year in sales.
Although troubled by his own experience with adoption, Thomas, married since 1954 to Lorraine, 66, and with four grown kids besides Wendy, felt it could offer a future for other children. He started the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption in 1992. In 1993, Thomas, who had left school at 15, graduated from Coconut Creak High School in Florida. He even tool Lorraine to the graduation dance party. The kids voted him ‘Most Likely to Succeed’. Thomas is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lorraine, five children and 16 grandchildren. His foundation helps raise awareness for the 134,000 foster children available for adoption, and helps make adoption more affordable. ‘The Dave you saw on TV was the real Dave,’ said friend Pat William. ‘He wasn’t a great actor or a great speaker.’ ‘He was just Joe Everybody’

When I smoked with my family, I would feel so relaxed and good, that nothing else in the world seemed to matter. I thought that smoking weed was okay since many of family members and people at my school smoked. Nothing ever happened to them. At one point I started smoking weed a lot more during lunch and after school. I never thought too much of it---just that I wanted to smoke, not that it was actually taking over my mind and body.
Then I began to fall behind in school. I would cut classes, come home late and spend at least 8 to 18 dollars a day. I never thought twice that marijuana had a bad effect on those things. Maybe my coming to class high was the reason why I was falling or coming home late. As I continued to smoke marijuana, I began to notice that I would always have the strong desire to smoke and I would get lost in cigarettes if I smoked those.
Now that I have learned mire about marijuana, I have reduced the amount of marijuana that I use. I don’t want drugs to be the most important in my life. I am not smoking every day, and not spending as much money. Now that I have cut down on my habit, I am saving more money . I’m ready to go back to school and do good, so that I can make something of myself. Everyone is always saying how weed excites your mind and how it solves problems. I think it only brings more problems. Marijuana is not good for your body or your brain. I’m not trying to tell you not to smoke, I’m just letting you know that marijuana can be dangerous to your health, and in the long run it may cause long-term negative effects. Help yourself now, before it is too late. I don’t want to lecture anyone, just share my experience with you. I do still smoke, but not as often.
Our government has taken measures to protect our youth from harm. They have worked to make their streets and their schools safer, to give them something positive to do after school before their parents get home. They try to protect their nation’s children from an even more deadly threat: smoking. Smoking kills more people every day than Aids, alcohol, car accidents, murders, suicides, drugs and fires combined. Nearly 90% of those smokers lit their first cigarette before they turned 18. Consider this: 3,000 children start to smoke every day illegally, and 1,000 of them will die sooner because of it. This is a national tragedy that every American should be honour-bound to help prevent. We have worked to stop our children from smoking they start, launching a nationwide campaign to educate them about the dangers of smoking to reduce their access to tobacco products, and to severely restrict tobacco companies from advertising to young people. Id we do these, we'll cut teen smoking by almost half over the next five years.

Spring Festival is the most formal and important festival in China. People from all over the country will return to their hometown to get together. But as the festival is coming, many Chinese people will experience lots of troubles and difficulties rather than a pleasant travel.
In fact, for most of them, it's a horrible experience to travel home during the Spring Festival. The first problem is how to get train tickets. They must book tickets in advance, usually ten days ahead of time. The question is some of them, especially migrant workers even don’t know when they can go back to hometown because they have to do extra work during the busy festival. If they leave work without any permission, sometimes the boss will take away their whole year’s pay.
On the way home, they have to be faced with their uncomfortable travel: carriages are crowded, washrooms are dirty, and trains often arrive late.
Why are there so many populations traveling back and forth?
Most of the travelers are these people called migrant workers, who live in the rural areas, but work in the large cities. They are originally farmers, born and grown up in rural areas. However, because the life in the countryside is much poorer than that in the city, in order to make more money, they don’t do any farm work, but move out to be engaged in various jobs in the developed citied. The main character of migrant workers flow is obvious, from countryside to big cities, from less developed areas to developed areas, from west China to southeast coastal China.
It is reported that over 120 million migrant worker have worked in big citied in China and 60% will come home during the Spring Festival. That is to say, there are 70 million travelers. The number is almost as large as the population of France.
So, that’s the reason why you always see some Chinese fight their way onto the train during the Spring Festival. So many migrant workers travel home to the rural areas before the Spring Festival, and travel back to big cities after that, thus creating the Chinese word ‘spring transportation’. In 2006, it is reported by the Chinese railway that 149 million people, most of whom are migrant workers, were transported during the Spring Festival, accounting for 11% of Chinese population.
