But he had something much better in mind. ‘I thought if I owned a restaurant,’ he said, ‘I could eat for free.’ A 1956 meeting with Harland Sanders led Thomas to a career as the manager of a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant that made him a millionaire in 1968. 17、n 1969, after breaking with Sanders, Thomas started the first Wendy’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers, in Columbia, Ohio, which set itself apart by serving made-to-order burgers. With 6,000 restaurant worldwide, the chain now makes $6 billion a year in sales. Although troubled by his own experience with a

18、doption, Thomas, married since 1954 to Lorraine, 66, and with four grown kids besides Wendy, felt it could offer a future for other children. He started the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption in 1992. In 1993, Thomas, who had left school at 15, graduated from Coconut Creak High School in Florida. H

23、y, I would feel so relaxed and good, that nothing else in the world seemed to matter. I thought that smoking weed was okay since many of family members and people at my school smoked. 24、 thought too much of it---just that I wanted to smoke, not that it was actually taking over my mind and body. Then I began to fall behind in school. I would cut classes, come home late and spend at least 8 to 18 dollars a day. I never thought twice that marijuana had a bad effect on those things. M

25、aybe my coming to class high was the reason why I was falling or coming home late. As I continued to smoke marijuana, I began to notice that I would always have the strong desire to smoke and I would get lost in cigarettes if I smoked those. Now that I have learned mire about marijuana, I have redu

26、ced the amount of marijuana that I use. I don’t want drugs to be the most important in my life. I am not smoking every day, and not spending as much money. Now that I have cut down on my habit, I am saving more money . I’m ready to go back to school and do good, so that I can make something of mysel

27、f. Everyone is always saying how weed excites your mind and how it solves problems. I think it only brings more problems. Marijuana is not good for your body or your brain. I’m not trying to tell you not to smoke, I’m just letting you know that marijuana can be dangerous to your health, and in the l

28、ong run it may cause long-term negative effects. Help yourself now, before it is too late. I don’t want to lecture anyone, just share my experience with you. I do still smoke, but not as often. Our government has taken measures to protect our youth from harm. They have worked to make their streets

29、and their schools safer, to give them something positive to do after school before their parents get home. They try to protect their nation’s children from an even more deadly threat: smoking. Smoking kills more people every day than Aids, alcohol, car accidents, murders, suicides, drugs and fires c

Consider this: 3,000 children start to smoke every day illegally, and 1,000 of them will die sooner because of it. This is a national tragedy that every American should be honour-bound to help prevent. We have work
