except，but 作介词使用的时候，意思为“除……外，除去……”。在它后面接不定式的时候，出现了要不要to 的问题。就是说，有时候，它们的不定式要接to，有的时候又不接to. 仔细地研究了下面的例句后，总结出一些规律，供大家参考。

1、简单地说，只要主句中有do，except, but 后不用to. 例如：

Lots of empty bottles were found under the old man’s bed. He must have done nothing but drink.

She can’t do anything but ask silly questions.

She can do everything except cook.

2. 主句谓语动词不是do，而是其它动词如have, be 等的时候，except, but 后面要接to. 例如：

It had no effect except to make him angry.
除了令他生气之外，没什么效果。

She had no alternative except to appeal  to a hig her court.
除了到上一级法庭上诉外，她别无选择。

He seldom went anywhere except to the library.
除了去图书馆，他很少去其它地方。

I had no choice but to stay in bed.
