Children are the future of our world. The healthy development of them is important to any country. The world has long been looking for ways to support children’s healthy development. As for that, the Child Friendly Cities Initiative (《儿童友好城市倡议》), CFCI for short, provides us with a good way forward.
CFCI is an initiative started by UNICEF and UN-Habitat in 1996. The initiative calls on people to build a city in which children can grow up healthily and safely and make their voices heard. The initiative has made a big difference worldwide since it started. Now, there are about 1,000 child friendly cities in the world.
Many cities in China have also shown their interest in joining the initiative. Shenzhen is one of the first cities in China that are trying to go child friendly. The city came up with an initiative called “seeing the world from a height of one meter”. It calls on society to see the world from the perspective (角度) of children and hear their voices. The city has opened up many child friendly spaces like reading rooms and playgrounds. Along with improving children’s living conditions, Shenzhen has also started child friendly radio lines and programs to let children share their opinions.
Building child friendly cities shows our wish for the healthy and happy growth of children. China plans to build 100 child friendly cities by 2025. We hope that all the children can grow up healthily and happily.

Scientists train AI to read human thoughts
Scientists have created a new tool that can turn people’s thoughts into words. It works by using an AI program called GPT-1 to translate brain activity into words. In order to achieve this, scientists did a lot.
First, scientists got everything ready before the tests. They invited some volunteers. Each spent sixteen hours listening to stories in a scanner (扫描仪). They imagined the stories as they heard them, and the scanner recorded their brain activity. GPT-1 made connections between the ideas in the stories and the recordings of the listeners’ brain activity.
Then came the tests. The scientists did them in three different ways.
Test 1
The researchers played a new story. GPT-1 was only given recordings of the volunteers’ brain activity. But the words that GPT-1 predicted (预测) were very similar to the words in the story that they were listening to. The words weren’t exactly the same, but they often carried the same meaning. For example, when a volunteer was listening to a story about a woman who didn’t have a driver’s license (执照). The program came up with this: “She hasn’t even started to learn to drive yet.”
Test 2
The scientists also carried out the test when volunteers imagined their own stories.“It really works at the level of ideas. The ideas are the same but expressed in different words,” says Alexander Huth, one of the scientists behind the study.
Test 3
The researchers showed the volunteers silent movies, with no spoken words at all. GPT-1 could still figure out the basic ideas.
After the tests, the scientists say that GPT-1 is the first AI program to turn what people are thinking into words without brain surgery. The tool isn’t something that can be easily used today, mainly because of the size and the cost of the scanner. In the future, they believe, a similar but cheaper tool could help people who have lost the ability to speak because of an injury or disease.
The scientists say their tool can’t be used to “read people’s minds” without permission. The tool only works if the person wants to share their thoughts.

Enjoy Nature with Foraging (搜寻)!
Do you enjoy walking in nature? Do you like learning about trees and plants? 36 . Foraging is a lot like looking for a treasure. You look around in places like forests and lakes to find different kinds of plants that you can eat.
Foraging is a lot of fun. 37 . Some of these plants are dangerous. Some of them are good to eat. You can spend many relaxing hours walking around in the wild, looking for good plants to eat.
38 . It is exciting and challenging to find plants that you can eat, but do not eat them until you are very sure of what they are. Before you go foraging, take a class about it. Learn how the different kinds of plants that you can eat look in the wild. Practice finding them with your foraging teacher. Then join a group of foragers. 39 . Never eat anything until you are 100% sure of what it is. Some people have become sick by accident because they ate a wild plant that was dangerous.
Foragers follow some important rules. They do not collect all of the plants in one area. If you take all the plants from one area, no more will grow there. 40 , like by a road or parking lot. If the area is very dirty, the plants there will not be good to eat and may make you very sick.
