In most classes, students sit at desks and listen to teachers in a classroom. But in a new class at Chapman Middle School (CMS) in Kansas, US, students are leaving the blackboards behind for blue skies and green grass.
They are actually taking an outdoor life class. It’s not a typical (典型的) class, but teachers are trying it out.
“We want kids to experience the outdoors,” the class teacher John Harris said.
Twenty-six students attend a semester class. That is 15 to 18 weeks. The class includes four parts: archery (射箭), hunting safety, survival skills (生存技能) and fishing. Students will also discuss how to protect natural resources.
Before Harris’ class this year, archery teacher Andy Fewin taught a 9-week outdoor life class. All CMS students took it. “It gets kids involved (参与) in something other than sitting and playing video games,” Fewin said.
Harris shares the same idea. He believes everyone needs to enjoy life and get outside. “The outdoor life class aims to get the kids interested in coming to school, really enjoying their class time and understanding the big picture,” Harris said.
But he said everyone needs to finish their other work first. “It really teaches them to focus and pay attention in class. If they don’t, then they’ll miss out on the fun things we’re doing,” he said.

The worker I hired to repair my house had just finished a difficult first day on the job. A broken wheel made him an hour late; his ladder (梯子) fell down when he was painting the roof and now his old truck wouldn’t start. With each problem he shouted angrily more at himself than at his things. As I drove him home, the man didn’t say a word.
I tried talking to the man to kill time. I managed to find out that he had come up from Blue Hills in Victoria with his family six months ago to find a job. This was his first job since moving here. I now knew why his price was lower than any other worker I could find in the local newspaper. He really needed the job. His clothes told me as much.
On arriving, much to my surprise, he invited me to meet his family. As we walked through his front garden, he suddenly stopped at a small tree and placed his hands on it. Then, when he opened the door, he completely changed. Instead of his troubled face, there was now a warm smile, hugs for his two children and a kiss for his wife.
The following day, I asked him about the tree. “That’s my trouble tree,” he answered. “Work troubles aren’t welcome at home with my wife and children. So I hang them on that tree every night when I come home. Then in the morning I pick them up again.”
“And you know what else?” he said smiling, “The next morning I find that there aren’t as many as I remember hanging up the night before.”

Zu Chongzhi was one of the greatest mathematicians in ancient China. He was born during the Northern and Southern dynasties. His family were very talented. They had been studying mathematics and astronomy (天文学) for generations. From a young age, Zu was taught natural science, astronomy, math, philosophy (哲学) and so on. The little boy was interested in all of these subjects, especially in math.
Zu was best known for his calculation of pi. According to historical records, he did all the work using only wooden sticks. It took him lots of time to work out the value — between 3.1415926 and 3.1415927. No one at that time was able to calculate it more accurately (准确地) than Zu. The achievement has been recognized around the world. In order to remember Zu, some mathematicians have suggested calling pi “Zu Lv (祖率)”. Zu was also known for working out how to calculate the volume (体积) of a sphere (球). He did this with the help of his son Zu Gengzhi. The two recorded their achievement in Zhui Shu. The book was used during the Tang dynasty.
But Zu was successful not only in math; he did a good job in astronomy, too. He worked out that a year should be 365.24281481 days long and created the Daming Calendar. However, government officials at that time did not agree with Zu. The great mathematician never saw his calendar put into use. After his death, Zu Gengzhi kept on proving that the Daming Calendar was more accurate. Almost ten years later, the new calendar was finally accepted.
Zu was also an inventor. He once made a vehicle that carried a pointer. However the vehicle turned, the pointer always pointed to the South. Zu also invented the 1,000-li Boat. The boat could travel 100 li (about 60 kilometers) in a day.
