Jose Arcadio Bndiya is Spanish descendant. After Ursula married him, she often wore straitjackets at night and refuses to have connection with her husband, which was due to fear of giving birth to children with a long tail like the marriage of her aunt and uncle. Because of that, her husband was laughed at their neighbor Aguilar and he killed Aguilar afterwards. From then on, the ghost of the dead with pain and sad eyes often appeared in front of him, so that he may not be at peace day and night. So they had to leave the village for seeking shelter. Inspired by a dream, they traveled more than two years, and settled down at a beach. Later, many people migrated to this place and named it Macondo. The history of the Buendia family was beginning from then on.
Jose Arcadio Bndiya is a creative people. When he saw magnet from gypsies, he wanted to use it for gold mining; when he saw that magnifier can focus on sunlight, he wanted to develop a powerful weapon. He used astrolabe and sextant given by gypsies to make an experiment. Through it, he realized that "the earth is round, like orange". He was not satisfied with their poor and backward village life, because Macondo is lost in the vast swamp. So he was determined to open up a way to connect Macondo with great inventions of the outside world. He with a group of people worked for more than two weeks, but unfortunately, they failed. Later, he studied alchemy and was deeply indulge. Because of his spiritual world was different from Macondo's narrow reality, he fell into a lonely courtyard and screwed up. He was tied to a tree by his family and died on the tree after many decades. Ursula became the pillar of family and lived to be 115 to 120 years old.
The second generation of the Boonediaz family has two men and one woman. The eldest Jose Arcadio was born on the road to the town. He grew up there, and had an affair with a woman named Pilar Ternera. And they had children as well. He was very scared, and later married the adopted daughter Rebecca. But he always gets defensive and was eager to rove all over the world. Later, he left with the gypsies and became uninhibited when he went back. In the end, he was assassinated strangely. The next boy Aureliano was born in Macon. He could cry on the womb, and came to the world with opened eyes. He could foresee everything as a child. After he grew up, he fell in love with a mayor daughter Remedios. Before this, he has given birth to a son with his brother’s lover and named him Aureliano Jose. After his wife died, he participated in the civil war and became a colonel. All his life he experienced fourteen assassinations, seventy-three ambushes and a shot, but both survived. He lived in sin with 17 foreign women, and gave birth to 17 boys. These boys all went back to Macondo for seeking their roots, but all were killed within a week. He returned home when he was old and was also obsessed with alchemy like his father until he died. Their little sister,
Amaranta fell in love with an Italy technician, and have incest with their nephew. Unpleasant love made her unhappy and she locked herself in the room alone to sewing clothes for the dead.
The third generation only has two cousins, Arcadio and Aureliano. The first one who didn’t know his mother fell in love with her, and almost made a big mistake. The latter became a Macondo's army chief, and finally was shot for taking bribes and bending the law. Before he died, he married a woman and gave birth to a girl and two boys. His cousin lost his heart to Aunt Amaranta, but couldn’t marry her. Therefore he joined the army, and ultimately killed by the outlying men.
The fourth generation has two boys and one girl who were born because of Arcadio’s adultery. Daughter Remedios the Beauty was lovely. She always gave out discomforting odor, which had set a few men to death. She was always willing to be naked, and liked spending time in bathing. Later when she dried sheets, there was a gust of wind blew up, she disappeared in the air forever. Her twin brother, Arcadio Segundo, worked for a banana company as a supervisor, and incited workers to strike. Later, more than 3000 workers were put in distress, and he was the only one man survived. He witnessed the government send the workers’ bodies by train and threw them into sea. But he was considered insane when telling this slaughter. He was very disappointed and finally put himself into parchment manuscript which was left by gypsies in the house. Another one, Aureliano Segundo often left his wife alone and had affairs with mistress. Strangely, this made livestock breed quickly and brought him wealth. Before died in pain, he and his wife had two daughters and a son. Therefore, people couldn’t recognize the two brothers.
The fifth generation is Aureliano Segundo’s two daughters and a son. The eldest son Jose Arcadio was sent to Roman seminary. His mother wanted him to be a archbishop in the future. But he had no interest in it, only deceived his mother for the imaginary legacy. After her mother died, he came home and led a living for selling industry. In the end, he was killed for keep more than 7000 gold coins hidden by Ursula in the cellar. The daughter Meme fell in love with a apprentice of banana company. But her mother forbade them to meet, so they had no choice but to meet secretly in the bathroom. Unfortunately, mother found and killed him by convicting of stealing chicken. In total despair, Meme was sent to the monastery with pregnancy. Little girl Amaranta Ursula studied in Brussels school when she was a child. When she went back home, she saw the shuttered Macondo and determined to rebuild their homes. She was bouncy and full of energy, and her mood is better than the family. She wanted to overthrow all outdated conventions and bad customs. Therefore, she set out a long-term plan to save the disaster-ridden village.
The sixth generation is the bastard son of Meme, Aureliano Babilonia. He grew up in solitude and his only hobby was hiding in the room to study a variety of mystery books and manuscripts. He was even able to talk with the old dead Gypsy, and was instructed to learn Sanskrit. He didn’t care about his surroundings, but knew medieval knowledge like the back of his hand. Since his aunt Amaranta Ursula came back, they found it’s difficult to overcome the love between them , finally they occurred an incestuous relationship. They believe that although they were tortured by loneliness and love, they are happy people in the world. Later Amaranta Ursula gave birth to a healthy boy. "He is the only crystallization of love in one hundred years of the Buendia family." However, he had a long pig tail. And Amaranta Ursula died of bleeding postpartum.
The boy with the long pig tail was the seventh generation of the family that has lasted a hundred years. He was besieged and eaten by a group of ants. At this time, Aureliano Babilonia finally cracked the parchments. The manuscript frontispiece of the inscription is: "the first person of the line is tied to a tree and the last is being eaten by the ants." Originally, this manuscript recorded the history of the Buendia family. When he translated the last chapter, a sudden hurricane swept the whole town and Macondo disappeared from the earth.
Comment
One hundred years of solitude is one of my favorite foreign novels. When I read this book I felt very different from other novels, which was one of the characteristics of it. The book almost has no positive atmosphere but loneliness and decadence.
The author told us the seven generations of the Buendia family at the town named Makondo. Finally, the man read the end of the book, he knew everything about his family and chose to accept the fate calmly. Loneliness is the sign of the family and you can feel the shadow of it in every members of the family. They were born with loneliness, and also they didn’t escape from loneliness. They were afraid of loneliness tried to be against with it in their own ways, but they also maintained a lonely stance.
The loneliness of the family reflects great loneliness and confusion of modern people: Who are we? Where are we come from? And where are we going to? But I want to say, it’s solitude, but not loneliness. When we are young, we all may fell solitude. We will ask that what’s my goal and how can I achieve it and so on. Solitude is not inevitable because we need to do something alone when we are on the way of pursuit.
Therefore, just do yourself to meet a better one , and more beautiful landscape.
