Abstract
Sister Carrie is the first novel of the famous American naturalistic novelist Theodore
Dreiser. It tells the experience of the rural girl Carrie, who came from the lower social class, and the way she jumped into a Broadway star, and vividly shows us the pictures which were full of Carrie's increasing endless desire.
Sister Carrier has gone through the hardships of job hunting, diseases and unemployment. In order to survive in the big city, she first became the mistress of the salesman Drouet, and later eloped with the hotel manager Hurst wood. However, Hurst wood lost his job in New York. For the sake of life, Carrier became a chorus actor. An accidental opportunity put Carrier to fame, and let her squeeze into the high society. It seemed that she realized the desire, but at the end of the story, she still sits in the rocking-chair dreaming of her own happiness. Trace it to its cause, it is mainly that Carrie was driven from the beginning to the end by the desire that never made her satisfied with the status quo, and that she constantly search for another goal. Her desires were procured by many factors.

Introduction
Since its publication in 1900, Sister Carrie has been widely read and
studied as one of the famous classics in the twentieth century. Accordingly, a
host of reader and critics try to read and reread it from different angles either on
the basis of literary criticism or by their keen perception. For years, the studies
on Sister Carrie as Theodore Dreiser's famous novel have appeared to be
diversified, and many critics have been inclined to read it as a naturalistic novel.
Naturalism emphasizes heredity and environment as important deterministic
forces shaping individualized characters that were presented in special and
detailed circumstances. However, few of the scholars have ever attempted to the

two factors for her desire, and the result of her pursuit of desire.

material life. She has gone through the hardships of job hunting, diseases and
unemployment. In order to survive in the big city, she first became the mistress
of the salesman Drouet, and later eloped with the hotel manager Hurst wood.
However, Hurst wood lost his job in New York. For the sake of life, Carrier
became a chorus actor. An accidental opportunity put Carrier to fame and made
her squeeze into the high society, which was her biggest desire.
2 Factors for Her Desire
The factors for her desire include: external factor and internal factor. Sister
Carrie's desire was behind the industrialization and urbanization's drive of the
development of society, and in the late 19th and early 20th century, the United
States had a profound change to the production-oriented ideology and the
consumer-oriented ideology was gradually replaced by it because after the Civil
War rapid economic development, industrialization and urbanization together
reached unprecedented levels, and commodity was rich.
2.1 External Factors
External factors include: influence of consumption ,attraction of the
expensive commodities and influence of the people around Carrie Meeber. This
desire was to keep her purchase, consumption of new products, to satisfy her
