一、It can be used as a pronoun..
1. Guangzhou is a beautiful city, isn’t it. ( Here it is used as a personal pronoun. )
2. Whose book is that? It is Mary’s. ( Here it refers to this or that.)
3. It______ is a cute baby. ( Here it is refers a baby whose sex we don’t know. )
二．Here impersonal it can be used to talk about time ,distance, weather, date, temperature, measure, environment,etc.
1．It is a rainy day. (weather)
2. It is 20 kilometers from my house to James’. (distance)
3. It is November 11, 2005. (date)
4. It is 9 o’clock at night. (time)
5. It was very quiet in the café. (environment)
6. It is summer now. (season)

三、It can be used as a anticipatory。

(Here it can be used in the subject or object position to stand for an infinitive, -ing form or a clause.)

A ( Here it is used as a formal subject.)
1). To smoke is bad. = It is bad to smoke.
2). Smoking is no good. = It is no good smoking.
3．That he he should have failed in this exam is strange.
= It is strange that he should have failed in his exam.
B ( Here it is used as a formal obbject.)
1）He found that to study the plant was important.
=He found it important to study the plant.
2）He was dead.  They kept it quiet.
=They kept it quiet that he was dead.
3) He thought it was no use going over the subject again.  
=He thought it no use going over the subject again.
四、It can be used in the sentence with It is …that/who… to give more emphasis to the subject , the object or the adverbial.

Tom met your brother in the park yesterday.
It was Tom who /that met your brother in the park yesterday.
• It was your brother that Tom met in the park yesterday.
• It was in the park that Tom met your brother yesterday. ）
• It was yesterday that Tom met your brother in the park.

五、It also can be used in some sentences.
1）It seems that… 好像/似乎
2) It is said/ reported/suggested/believed that… 据说/据报道 / 据建议/据信……
3）It is impossible/necessary/strange…that …“ “……是不可能的/必要的 /奇怪的”
4）It is a pity/a shame that… ”……很可惜/很羞愧”

6) It is impossible/necessary for sb. to do sth.
7) It is kind/ stupid/ foolish/good/wise of sb. to do sth.
