Unite 5 First Aid First aid for burns Teaching Goals: 1. Enable the Ss to get some first aid knowledge 2. Enable the Ss to learn how to use what they’ve learnt to do first aid treatment for burns correctly. 3. Lead-in Show the Ss a picture about first aid. Step2. Warming up Ask the students: What’s first aid? First aid is __________________ given to someone who suddenly ___________ or _____________ before a doctor can be found. Then let the Ss’ discuss what kind of first aid they should give in the following situations. (show the Ss the picture of warming up on P33) Step3. Pre-reading Show the Ss the picture of Pre-reading on P33 and ask them the following questions: What has happened? What sort of injuries the child will get? How will her mother deal with the burn? Step4. Reading 1. Fast reading Task1: Let the Ss read the passage fast and try to get the main idea of it. The passage mainly tells us __________ A: How to protect oneself from getting burned. B: It tells us what the first aid is. C: How to deal with burns. D: The functions of the skin and the causes, characteristics, treatments for different degree burns. Task2: In which order are these topics covered in the text? Detailed reading Task1: Let the students read para 1 and then answer the question: What can skin do for our body ? 1) _________________________________________ 2) _________________________________________ 3) _________________________________________ 4) _________________________________________ 5) _________________________________________ Task2: Let the Ss find the causes of burns in para 2 Task3: Read para 3 and then fill in the blanks. Task4: Read para 4 and then match the pictures with their corresponding degree of burns. the first degree the third degree the second degree Task5: Read para 5 and decide whether the first aid treatment is Right (R) or Wrong (W). 1. When someone is burned, you should place some ice on his wound. 2. We should put damp cloths on the second degree burns. 3. We shouldn’t break the blisters, or they will make the wound infected. 4. Sometimes, we can put oil or ointments on burns to stop the infection. 5. If burns are on the face, we should make the victim sit up. Step5. Post-reading. Task1. Summary : Ask the Ss to fill in the blanks with proper words  according to the text. Burns, which are caused by hot (1)__________ , fire, radiation and so on, can be divided into (2)_________types, depending on which(3)________of the skin are burned. Different degree burns need different first aid.
