It was not a busy road, but sometimes, cars passed the farm. Near the farm gate, there was a large hole in the road. This hole was always full of water, and the drivers of the cars could not see how deep the hole was. Then when they drove into the hole, they could not drive out because it was so deep. The farmer did not spend much time working on his farm. He spent most of it watching the hole. When a car drove into it, he pulled the car out with his tractor and asked the driver for a lot of money for doing it. One day, the driver of a car said to him, “You must make a lot of money by pulling cars out of this hole night and day.” “No, no,” the farmer said, “I don't pull cars out of the hole at night. At night I fill the hole with water.” A At nine most mornings the same scene is repeated in office buildings around the world. An employee walks into the lift with his boss and apart from a mumbled(咕噜的) “good morning”, the junior is lost for words. That's an opportunity missed, say experts, who believe that such an obviously dull 30second conversation can be invaluable for those who want to climb the career (职业) ladder. “Small talk can help set up a relationship upon which you can build,” says Dusseldorf communications advisor Torsten Knobble. As a matter of fact, the importance of small talk goes far beyond the relationship to one's boss. People who fail the art of speaking a lot without actually saying anything find it harder to cultivate relationships in the workplace, believes Ulrich Goldschmidt, director of the senior management association VDF in Essen. “Small talk is a necessary part of networking,” he says. Actually every conversation begins and ends with small talk, according to Wolf Lasko, who has written a book on the topic and its bearing on career futures. Not everyone is good at small talk. It takes skill to pick the right moment and the right topic with which to start a conversation. There are plenty of topics although some are not suitable for informal chat. Safe topics include holidays, the movies, music or sports. Besides, body language is part of small talk; it's not a good idea to stand around with arms folded. Small talk is a question of closeness and distance. For a few employees, it's never a bad idea to hold back at the beginning and familiarize themselves with the company culture first. 21.The main subject discussed in the text is that________. A. small talk needs skills B. every conversation begins and ends with small talk C. small talk is a question of closeness and distance D. small talk is necessary to your career 22.Why is the junior lost for words while walking into the lift with his boss? A. He is not familiar with the boss and the company. B. He doesn't expect that his boss will be with him. C. He is not good at developing a relationship. D. He is not interested in holidays, music or sports. 23.The underlined word “cultivate” in the text probably means “________”. A. develop B. break up C. familiarize D. bring up 答案与解析 A 由该词所在句的句意“不懂讲话艺术,也不说话的人发觉在工作场所与人进展关系很难。” 24.We may infer from the text that________. Mother was pulling out quilt (被子) after quilt from the boxes, proudly showing me their beauties. She was preparing for a quilt show at the Elmhurst Church. When we began to fold and put them back into the boxes, I noticed something at the bottom of one box. I pulled it out. “What is this?” I asked. “Oh?” Mom said, “That's Mama's quilt.” I spread the quilt. It looked as if a group of school children had pieced it together: irregular designs, childish pictures, a crooked line on the right. “Grandmother made this?” I said, surprised. My grandmother was a master at making quilts. This certainly didn't look like any of the quilts she had made. “Yes, right before she died. I brought it home with me last year and made some changes,” she said. “I'm still working on it. See, this is what I've done so far.” I looked at it more closely. She had made straight a crooked line. At the centre of the quilt, she had stitched (缝) a piece of cloth with these words:“My mother made many quilts. She didn't get all lines straight. But I think this is beautiful. I want to see it finished. Her last quilt.” “Oh, this is so nice,Mom,” I said. It occurred to me that by completing my grandmother's quilt, my mother was honouring her own mother. I realized, too, that I held in my hands a family treasure. It started with the loving hands of one woman, and continued with the loving hands of another. 28.Why did the author go to her mother's home? A. To see her mother's quilts. B. A. unfinished B. broken C. bent D. unusual 答案与解析 C 词义猜想题。文章第六段又消灭这个词,从“She had made straight a crooked line.” 31.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. A Quilt Show B. Mother's Home C. A Monday Dinner D. Grandmother's Quilt 答案与解析 D 主旨大意题。 D Some people think that as more and more people have televisions in their homes, fewer and fewer people will buy books and newspapers. Why read an article in the newspaper, when the TV news can bring you the information in a few minutes and with pictures? Why read the life story of a famous man, when a short television program can tell you all that you want to know? _Television_has_not_killed_reading,_however. Today, newspapers sell in very large numbers. And books of every kind are sold more than ever before. Books are still a cheap way to get information and enjoyment. Although some books with hard covers are expensive, many books are printed today as paperbacks (平装本), which are quite cheap. A paperback collection of short stories, for example, is always che
