Part II Reading Comprehension(40 marks) Section A (30 marks) Directions: Read the following four passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage. A Confidence is very important in daily life. It can help you to develop a healthy attitude (态度). A study shows that people who are more confident are much happier. They can have more chance to make themselves successful. But how can we be more confident? Here are some suggestions: Speak loud. When you are not confident, you can't do well what you want to do. You speak in a voice so low that other people can hardly hear you. Try to speak loud enough so that people can hear you clearly. The high voice can help you become more confident. Play sports. Physical exercise makes you tired but completely relaxed. A strong body helps you be full of confidence. Encourage yourself. Write down a list of things you did during the day to see how many things you have done well. Did you finish your homework? Did you tell a joke that made everybody laugh? Give yourself praise for the good things you've done. Get rid of (克服) fear. Fear comes along with failure. But it's easy to overcome if you know that failure is part of your life. Don't hide your head just because you said something stupid last time. Try to start again and believe you can do better. Pick up a hobby. If you like singing, sing as much as you can. In some ways, a hobby can make you outstanding. And it will make you happy and confident. 21.People who are more confident________. A.Five                 B.Four                 C.Three             D.Two B When I was growing up in America, I was ashamed of my mother’s Chinese English. Because of her English, she was often treated unfairly(不公正地). People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her. My mother has realized the limitations of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on phone to pretend I was she. I was forced to ask for information or even to yell at people who had been rude to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker. I said in an adolescent voice that was not very convincing, “This is Mrs. Tan.” And my mother was standing beside me, whispering loudly, “Why he don’t send me check, already two week late.” And then, in perfect English I said: “I’m getting rather concerned. You agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasn’t arrived.” Then she talked more loudly. “What he want? I come to New York tell him front of his boss.” And so I turned to the stockbroker again, “I can’t tolerate any more excuse. If I don’t receive the check immediately, I am going to have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week.” The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there red-faced, my mother, the real Mrs. Tan, was shouting to his boss in her broken English. When I was a teenager, my mother’s broken English embarrassed me. But now, I see it differently. To me, my mother’s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, and full of observation and wisdom. It was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed ideas, and made sense of the world. 24. Why was the author’s mother poorly served? A. She was unable to speak good English.             B. She was often misunderstood. C. She was not clearly heard.                                 D. She was not very polite. 25. From Paragraph 2, we know that the author was ____________. A. good at pretending                                      B. rude to the stockbroker C. ready to help her mother                              D. unwilling to phone for her mother 26. What does the author think of her mother’s English now? A. It confuses her.                                            B. It embarrasses her. C. It helps her understand the world.               D. It helps her tolerate rude people. 27. We can infer from the passage that Chinese English ___________. A. is clear and natural to non-native speakers              B. is vivid and direct to non-native speakers C. has a very bad reputation in America D. may bring inconvenience(不便) in America C Along the river banks of the Amazon and the Orinoco there lives a bird that swims before it can fly, flies like a fat chicken, eats green leaves, has the stomach of a cow and has claws(爪)on its wings when young. They build their homes about 4.6m above the river, an important feature(特征) for the safety of the young. It is called the hoatzin. In appearance, the birds of both sexes look very much alike with brown on the back and cream and red on the underside. The head is small, with a large set of feathers on the top, bright red eyes, and blue skin. Its nearest relatives are the common birds, cuckoos. Its most striking feature, though, is only found in the young. Baby hoatzins have a claw on the leading edge of each wing and another at the end of each wing tip. Using these four claws, together with the beak(喙), they can climb about in the bushes, looking very much like primitive(原始的) birds must have done. When the young hoatzins have learned to fly, they lose their claws. During the drier months between December and March hoatzins fly about the forest in groups of 20 to 30 birds, but in April, when the rainy season begins, they collect together in smaller living units of two to seven birds for producing eggs. 28.What is the text mainly about?    A.Hoatzins in dry and rainy seasons.         B.The relatives and enemies of hoatzins. C.Primitive birds and hoatzins of the Amazon.  D.The appearance and living habits of a bird, hoatzins. 29.Baby hoatzins are different from their parents in that_______.     A.they look like young cuckoos         B.they have claws on the wings     C.they eat a lot like a cow              D.they live on river banks 30.What can we infer about primitive birds from the text? A.They had claws to help them climb.        B.They could fly long distances. C.They had four wings like hoatzins.         D.They had a head with long feathers on the top. 31.Why do hoatzins collect together in smaller groups when the rainy season comes?     A.To find more food.                B.To protect themselves better.     C.To keep themselves warm.         D.To produce their young. D There are thousands of products of all colors and shapes in a supermarket, making you believe that they are worth a try. How come the products are so attractive? Packaging (包装) is the silent but persuading salesman.        There on the shelves, each bottle, can, box, and jar has been carefully designed and measured to speak to the inner self of the consumer, so that he is buying not only a product but also his belief in life. Scientists have studied consumer behavior recently and found that the look of the package has a great effect on the “quality” of the product and on how well it sells, because “Consumers generally cannot tell between a product and its package. Many products are packages and many packages are products,” as Louis Cheskin, the first social scientist studying consumers’ feeling for packaging, noticed.        Colors are one of the best tools in packaging. Studies of eye movement have shown that colors draw human attention quickly. Take V8 for example. For many years, the bright red color of tomatoes and carrots on the thin bottle makes you feel that it is very good for your body. And the word “green” today can keep food prices going up.        Shapes are another attraction. Circles often suggest happiness and peacefulness, because these shapes are pleasing to both the eye and the heart. That’s why the round yellow M signs of McDonald’s are inviting to both young and old.        This new consumer response to the colors and shapes of packages reminds producers and sellers that people buy to satisfy both body and soul. 32.According to the passage, ________ seems to be able to persuade a consumer to buy the product. A. the pleasing color of the package                    B. the special taste of the product C. the strange shape of the package                   D. the belief in the product 33.If a package or a product is round in shape, it can ________. A. bring excitement to the consumers                   B. attract the consumers’ attention C. catch the eye movement of the consumers  D. produce a happy and peaceful feeling 34.“And the word ‘green’ today can keep food prices going up.” This sentence suggests that consumers today are ________. A. starting to notice the importance of new food B. enjoying the beauty of nature more than before C. beginning to like green vegetables D. paying more attention to their health 35.It can be inferred from the passage that V8 is a kind of ________. A. vegetable dish        B. healthy juice           C. iced drink               D. red vegetable Section B (10 marks) Directions: Complete the following passage by filling each blank with one sentence that best fits the context. First arrange your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. 37.____ A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time. Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials.
