Shaul Shalvi, a psychologist at the University of Amsterdam, and his colleagues wanted to know if the drive to cheat is something that grows or diminishes when the potential cheater has time to reflect on his actions.
For their experiment, they appropriately chose the gambling dice(骰子), which was the symbol of sinful activity. They wanted to find out whether people were more likely to lie about the result of a dice roll when asked that result immediately, or when given time to think.
In the experiment, they gave each of 76 volunteers a six-sided dice and a cup. Participants were told that a number of them, chosen at random, would earn ten shekels (about $2.50) for each of the number they rolled on the dice. They were then instructed to shake their cups, check the outcome of the rolled dice and remember this roll. Next, they were asked to roll the dice two moretimes, to satisfy themselves that it was not loaded, and then enter the result of the first roll on the computer. Half of the participants were told to complete this within 20 seconds while the others were given no time limit.
The researchers had no way of knowing what numbers participants actually rolled, but they knew, statistically, that the average roll, if people reported honestly, should have been 3.5. This gave them a guideline to calculate participants’ honesty. Those entering their results within 20 seconds reported an average roll of 4.6. Those who were not under any time pressure reported an average roll of 3.9. Both groups lied, then. But those who had had more time for reflection lied less.
A second experiment confirmed this result. A different group of volunteers were asked to roll the dice just once. Again, half were put under time pressure and, since there were no additional rolls to make, the restriction was changed from 20 seconds to eight. The others were allowed to consider the matter for as long as they wished. The first half reported an average roll of 4.4. Those given no time limit reported an average of 3.4. The second group, in other words, actually told the truth.
The conclusion is that sin is indeed original. Without time for reflection, people will be likely to "cheat". Given such time, however, they will often do the right thing. If you want someone to be honest, then, do not press him too hard for an immediate decision.

Around four years ago, I received a call from the principal of our school as to the "Parents View" talk the next morning. He asked me to speak to the group. After the call, my whole body became feverish and panicky. The time from his call to the next morning seemed like years. The whole night, I could not sleep with many ominous apprehensions in mind. One of them was to call the principal with regret and tell him that I could not come. Finally, I gathered some courage. My speech was not only appreciated by the principal as well as the teachers, because I was able to get my idea across to them. They encouraged and praised my efforts. After delivering is successfully, I became more confident .l said to myself, "If I can speak in front of such a learned audience, like the principal who educates others, I can now speak in front of others too."
I started delivering lectures in my plant, on various topics like Self Motivation, Personality Development, Personal Excellence, Spoken English and Presentation Skills. This has become a passion for me. I learned that everything is possible if we have the courage to take the first step.

16 When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when an executive gets a new sports car, visions of country clubs and pleasure beats dance into view.
The many wants of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels. 17 .
The first and most basic level of wants involves food. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears: clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War II these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. 18 It included such items as automobiles and new houses.
By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared: the “life-enriching” level. While the other levels involve
physical satisfaction-the feeding, comfort, safety, and transportation of the human body-this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “luxury” items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical care, and entertainment. 19
On this level, a greater percentage of consumer spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?
A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime and prejudice. 20 In this way, we can enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.
A. Then a third level appeared.
B. Different people have different wants on each level.
C. There are several levels of wants in one’s life.
D. When there is money enough to satisfy one level of wants, another level appears
E. At this stage, we now may seek to ensure the health, safety, and leisure.
F. Also included here are fancy foods and the latest styles in clothing.
G. Human wants seem endless.
American black bears appear in a variety of colors despite their name. In the eastern part of their range, most of these bears have shiny black fur, but in the west they grow brown, red, or even yellow coats. 21 Even in the same litter (一窝幼崽), both brown and black furred bears
may be born.
Black bears are the smallest of all American bears, ranging in length from five to six feet, weighing from three hundred to five hundred pounds. 22
23 However, if attacked, most can climb trees and cover ground at great speeds. When angry or frightened, they are formidable enemies.
Black bears feed on leaves, herbs, fruit, berries, insects, fish, and even larger animals. 24 Unlike squirrels, woodchucks, and many other woodland animals, bears do not actually hibernate. Although the bear does not eat during the winter months, sustaining itself from body fat, its temperature remains almost normal, and it breathes regularly four or five times per minute.
25 They prefer to live in caves. Baby black bears are born in January or February after a gestation(怀孕) period of six to nine months, and they stay with their mother until they are fully grown or about one and a half years old. Black bears can live as long as thirty years in the wild, and even longer in some nature reserves.
A. To the north, the black bear is actually gray or white in color.
B. Black bears mate all year round.
