It was Thanksgiving morning and in the crowded kitchen of my small home I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together inside the storm door on the top step.
“ Any old papers, lady?” asked one of them.
I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals(凉鞋), wet with heavy snow.
“ Come in and I’ll make you a cup of hot cocoa.”
They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread with jam to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started again on my household budget.
The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?”
“Am I rich? Mercy, no!”
I looked at my shabby slipcovers(家具套). The girl put her cup back in its saucer carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” Her voice was hungry with a need that no amount of food could supply. They left after that, holding their bundles of papers against the wind. They hadn’t said “Thank you”. They didn’t need to. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful.
Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched.
I tasted the potatoes and stirred the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a good steady job--- these matched, too.
I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy prints of the small sandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a while, I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am.
31. Why did the writer let the children in?

C. She knew them and wanted to make them a cup of cocoa
D. She wanted to invite them to her thanksgiving party
32. The girl thought the writer was rich perhaps in that ________.
A. she saw that the lady’s room was comfortable
B. she saw the cups matched the saucers
C. the writer’s slipcovers were very new

33. From the passage, we can infer that whether you are rich depends on ________.
A. how much money you have had
B. how you feel about your life
C. how you have helped others
D. what job you are doing

A. show her husband that someone had come
B. remind her that she had helped two children
C. show that she was a kind- hearted woman

Two-year-old hero Ye Chengfeng saved most of his family from a deadly gas leak(泄漏). As his grandfather lay dead, the child woke up his grandmother and saved five other family members from death.
More and more British school kids use their mobile phones to cheat(作弊)in exams. They use them to send messages to get the answers. So far this year, 1,013 students were caught cheating with mobile phones. Teachers are now teaching themselves so they can find the cheats. They also ask the students to hand the phones in before exams.
A new study shows that girl chimps(黑猩猩) are faster to use tools than boys! Experts found that girl chimps in East Africa use sticks to dig in the soil two years earlier than boys do. But they don’t know why. Girls watched their moms work, but the boys climbed trees. Yes, human girls always learn to write and draw first, but boys often run and play balls earlier than girls.
In Germany, doctors have three ways to help kids who are addicted (上瘾的)to the Internet. First, learning art — Kids learn painting or singing; Second, doing sports — Kids do swimming or horse riding. Exchange of Letters
Dear Mr. Harringtom,
I saw your name on a list of teachers of French who wish to spend their holidays in France this summer.I am a teacher of English in Saint-Simon, a charming little village in the Loire valley, just south of Saumur. I should very much like to spend some time in England, because it is many years since I had a chance to practise my English. Perhaps we could exchange houses for three weeks in late July or early August.
I have heard a lot about Cumbria and the Lake District. I have been keen to spend a holiday in Cumbria ever since I first saw pictures of the foxhunting, and read about the fine hunting dogs that you have in your part of the country. I am very interested in fox-hunting and I take my dogs out hunting in the local forest whenever I can.
I shall tell you more about Saint-Simon and the surrounding countryside when and if you express interest in my plan.I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Jean-Baptiste Foucault
Dear Mr. Foucault,
I was very interested to receive your letter of 3rd March. You are right in thinking that I should like to spend some time in France. I am sure my French is as rusty as your English!
You are also right in thinking that Cumbria is famous for its foxes and its hunting dogs; but there are many other things for which Cumbria is famous.Barrow, for example, is famous for its ship-building industry; I live just across the road from the docks(码头) where ships from Ireland and elsewhere load and unload. In fact, on days when the Irish Sea is not under a blanket of fog, I can see the hills of Northern Ireland in one direction, as clearly as I can see the Cumbrian hills in the other.
In short, I am afraid Barrow might not have been what you had in mind when you thought about a holiday in Cumbria. Instead of being able to offer you the dog and the fox, I can only offer you the fog and the docks!
Yours sincerely,
Robert Harrington

A. he is a keen fox-hunting man
B. there are many forests where he can take his dog hunting
C. he has heard a lot about the good English spoken in Cumbria
D. the first pictures he saw of England were of Cumbria and the Lake District
40. Mr. Foucault does not say much about Saint-Simon because _________.
A. Mr. Harrington has been there and seen it for himself
B. it is such a small village there is very little to say about it
C. he wants to know first whether Mr. Harrington is interested in his plan
D. he knows Mr. Harrington will not be very interested in Saint-Simon
41. Mr. Harrington agrees with Mr. Foucault that _________.
A. Cumbrian dogs are very much like foxes
B. Cumbria has a reputation as a fox-hunting district
C. Cumbria is only famous for its fox-hunting
D. Cumbria is more famous for ship-building than fox-hunting
42. Mr. Harrington thinks _________.
A. Mr. Foucault will want to change his mind about exchanging
B. Barrow will be just what Mr. Foucault had in mind for his holiday
C. fog and docks have as much to offer the holiday-makers as dogs and foxes
D. Mr. Foucault will enjoy his holiday in Barrow because of the fog and docks

Our town is in the eastern part of our country. Once a year we elect a girl to show how beautiful and great our town is .All the girls are eager to get this position in an effort to become popular.
It was not an easy choice this year ,since there were eight girls to choose from .The elder judge finally decided that either Sara or May would get the position .Both girls were beautiful with extraordinary appearance .Besides ,they had a good education and cared about how pollution had a bad effect on the earth .Most important ,both girls got up early to eat eggs at their breakfast .Eggs were important to people of the east because our economy depended mainly on the production of eggs.
“Either girl will win,” my father said. “But someone will cry in the end.”
“Either will be fine,” I said. “They are both great girls.”
The final round was held at the east edge of our town .Sara lived nearby so she did not need to get up early to arrive .However, she was the first person there. “You know what they say about the early bird,” she said with a smile.
However, May arrived fifteen minutes late to the competition. “It’s the taxi driver’s fault,” she said. “I told him to head east, but he was in one ear and thought I said Bread Cheese .” You know, Bread Cheese was the name of our neighboring town.
I thought
