21.(6分)Bamboo is one of the world's most useful plants. For thousands of years, bamboo has been used in many different ways-from food to medicine to clothing and, in small ways, as a building material.
However, bamboo is not often used as a building material in the developed world. A professor at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania is trying to change that. The professor and his students are testing the strength of bamboo. They are testing how much pressure or weight it can take before breaking.
Kent Harries is a professor at the University of Pittsburgh. Harries says that testing methods for bamboo need to be the same for all. They need to be standardized. Standardizing test methods for bamboo will help to bring the plant into common use. It will also give engineers and builders around the world a dependable standard.
Harries says that bamboo is strong in nature. The strength of at least three species of bamboo is similar to steel.Besides its strength, bamboo has other features that make it very useful in building. He says it is resilient(有弹力的), meaning it keeps its shape and strength even under pressure.
Bamboo also grows quickly. Bamboo that is suitable for construction needs much less resources than wood. The harvest cycle of bamboo is about 3 years. Softwoods such as cedar, pine and spruce have a harvest cycle of about 10 years. And hardwoods that come from flowering plants such as oak and walnut need more than 30 years.
Bamboo is widely used as food for panda bears. It is also used for flooring and window covers. However, for building, bamboo is not used much outside its native growing area. This is mostly because of its round shape. But there are other reasons too. People think -- or have the mentality--that bamboo is a low quality building material.

22.(8分) Andrew Jackson has been sitting pretty on the $20 bill for 87 years. Is it time to bring some new blood to the banknote?
The non-profit organization called Women on 20s is campaigning to put a woman’s face on American money. Barbara Ortiz Howard, the company’s founder, would like to see a woman on the $20 bill by 2020.That year marks the 100-year anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which gave women the right to vote.
Howard got the idea when she realized that her daughter had no everyday reminders of famous women in history. She asked her friend Susan Ades Stone, a journalist, to join her cause. “Part of the aim is to educate as many people as possible about as many women as possible,” Ades says. “We want to see how many people we can reach.”
American money values the successes of former presidents and founding fathers. Currently, there are only two women on money: Susan B.Anthony is the face of the rare dollar coin, and Sacagawea can be seen on the gold dollar coin. There are no women on paper bills.
With help from writers and historians, Howard and Stone came up with a voting list featuring 15 important women. Ades says there is a standard for choosing candidates. They look at the women’s contributions to our world, and at what challenges they faced.
More than 72,000 people have voted so far in the poll. Ades says the competition has narrowed to a “very close race”, but won’t say who’s in the lead. After two rounds of voting, Women on 20s will send their campaign to the White House for consideration. The final decision is up to the Treasury Secretary, Jack Lew. Lew is unlikely to make a change without the president’s approval. But last year, when a little girl asked the president why there aren’t any women on US currency, he said that adding a woman is a “pretty good idea”.

23.(8分)It seemed like a typical November day, a month after my grandmother had passed away. I was frustrated by everything that was going on around me.
I was mad and confused about everyone especially when I saw a young girl walking through the store holding her grandmother’s hand. The little girl was begging her grandmother for ice cream just like I used to when I was young. I was jealous of the little girl, because she had something I didn’t have anymore — a grandmother by her side.
I had to force myself to ignore the little girl. She was just too happy for me and that was unacceptable at that time in my world.
I went to the cash register to pay for my things. It was then that my anger quickly shifted from the little girl to the cashier. She took my things to another register. When the cashier gave me my change I didn’t say thank you. I simply took my change and left.
Feeling tired and hopeless, I began walking to my car. As I stood in a public parking lot a million questions formed in my mind. Why did this happen to me? Aren’t we supposed to get signs from the people that passed on? Why didn’t I feel her presence anymore?
Suddenly, a woman driving right by my side rolled down her window. “Excuse me, excuse me, excuse me,” she said loudly. Thinking she was going to ask for my parking spot, I simply pointed to my car. “No, excuse me,” she said again.
Then I felt I had no choice but to see what this annoying lady wanted. She reached to the very bottom of her bag and handed me a three-page booklet. “It looks like that you need this,” she said calmly with a smile on her face.
I looked down at the used booklet and there were some big bold letters on the front cover reading, “What Hope for Dead Loved Ones?” By the time I looked up she had gone.
I felt a sense of relaxation as I read the first page. It explained how people pass on and that their spirit remains with us. It was the first time since my grandmother passed away that I had felt her with me. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, but I knew that I finally felt happiness from a stranger.
1、Why was the author jealous of the little girl?
A.She had her grandmother by her side.
B.She could ask her grandmother for some flowers.
C.She was walking with her grandfather.
D.She gave the booklets to the woman.
2、The woman driving right by the author’s side wanted to give the author _______.
A.some flowers B.a notebook
C.a letter D.a booklet
3、What can we know from the last paragraph?
A.The woman became the author’s friend. B.The author was happy in the end.
C.The author was with her grandmother again. D.The author felt angry.
24.(8分)I still remember my hands and my fingers still remember — what used to lie in store for us on our return to school from the holidays. The trees in the school yard would be in full leaf again and the old leaves would be lying around like a muddy sea of leaves.
“Get that all swept up!” the headmaster would tell us. “I want the whole place cleaned up, at once!” There was enough work there, to last over a week. Especially since the only tools with which we were provided were our hands, our fingers, our nails. “Now see that it’s done properly, and be quick about it,” the headmaster would say to the elder pupils, “or you’ll have to answer for it!”
So at an order from the elder boys we would all line up like peanuts about to cut and gather in crops. If the work was not going as quickly as the headmaster expected, the big boys, instead of giving us a helping hand, used to find it simpler to beat us with branches pulled from the trees. In order to avoid these blows, we used to bribe (贿赂) the elder boys with the juicy cakes we used to bring for our midday meal. And if we happened to have any money on us, the coins changed hands at once. If we did not do this, or if we were afraid of going home with an empty stomach or an empty purse, the blows were redoubled. They hit us so violently and with such evil enjoyment even a deaf and dumb person would have realized that we were being beaten not so much to make us work harder, hut rather to beat us into a state of obedience (服从) in which we would be only too glad to give up our food and money.
Occasionally one of us, worn out by such calculated cruelty, would have the courage to complain to the headmaster. He would of course be very angry, but the punishment he gave the elder boys was always very small — nothing compared to what they had clone to us. And the fact is that however much we complained, our situation did not improve in the slightest. Perhaps we should have let our parents know what was going on, but somehow we never dreamed of doing so; I don’t know whether it was loyalty or pride that kept us silent, but I can see now that we were foolish to keep quiet about it, for such beating was completely foreign to our nature.
