One of my father's buddies, Bernie, was a successful fruit-and-vegetable wholesaler, who operated a warehouse in St. Paul. Every summer, when the first watermelons rolled in, Bernie would call. Dad and I would go to Bernie's warehouse and take up our positions. We'd sit on the edge of the dock, feet dangling(摇晃), and lean over, minimizing the volume of juice we were about to spill on ourselves. Bernie would take his machete(刀), crack our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we'd bury our faces in watermelon, eating only the heart - the reddest, juiciest, firmest, most seed-free, most perfect part - and throw away the rest. Bernie was my father's idea of a rich man. I always thought it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that what my father admired about Bernie's wealth was less its substance than its application. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the watermelon. What I learned from Bernie is that being rich is a state of mind. Some of us, no matter how much money we have, will never be free enough to eat only the heart of the watermelon. Others are rich without ever being more than a paycheck ahead. If you don't take the time to dangle your feet over the dock and chomp into life's small pleasures, your career is probably overwhelming your life. For many years, I forgot that lesson I'd learned as a kid on the loading dock. I was too busy making all the money I could. Well, I've relearned it. I hope I have time left to enjoy the accomplishments of others and to take pleasure in the day. That's the heart of the watermelon. I have learned again to throw the rest away. Finally, I am rich. 1、Why did the author's father think Bernie was a rich man? A.Because Bernie was a successful businessman. B.Because his father admired Bernie's wealth. C.Because Bernie was good at making friends. D.Because Bernie knew how to fully enjoy life. 2、What did the author learn from Bernie? A.Being free is what he pursues. B.Being rich is a state of mind. C.A lot of money makes him happy. D.He likes paying all the bills. 3、According to the text, what does “the heart of the watermelon” mean to the author? A.Making a lot of money. B.Having more watermelons. C.Being a wholesaler. D.Enjoying every day. 4、What's the purpose of the text? A.To introduce a successful person in business. B.To warn us of the hardships of becoming rich. C.To remind us of the true meaning of richness. D.To give tips on how to work with others. 22.(8分) US scientists say they have poured cold water on the theory that washing hands with hot water kills more germs (细菌) than unheated water. The small study of 20 people found using water at 15℃ (59F) left hands as clean as water heated to 38℃ (100F). National Health Service (NHS) recommends that people wash their hands in either cold or warm water. In this study, scientists at Rutgers University — New Brunswick wanted to find out if popular assumptions about the benefits of warm or hot water and official guidance on hot water — given to the food industry in the US — held true. They asked 20 people to wash their hands 20 times each with water that was 15℃ (59F), 26℃ (79F) or 38 degrees (100F). Volunteers were also asked to experiment with varying amounts of soap. Before they started the tests, their hands were covered in harmless bugs. Researchers say there was no difference in the amount of bugs removed as the temperature of the water or the amount of soap changed. Prof Donald Schaffner said, “People need to feel comfortable when they are washing their hands but as far as effectiveness goes, this study shows us that the temperature of the water used did not matter.” However, the researchers accept their study is small and say more extensive work is needed to determine the best ways to remove harmful bacteria. In the UK, NHS experts say people can use cold or hot water to wash their hands. They say hands should be washed for at least 20 seconds and stress the importance of using enough soap to cover the whole surface of the hands. Their guidance focuses on rubbing hands together in various ways to make sure each surface of each hand is clean. 1、What does the underlined phrase “poured cold water” in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A.Proved. B.Contradicted. C.Created. D.Accepted. 2、After they washed their hands with either hot or cold water, _______. A.It is popular. B.It is convincing. C.It is incomplete. D.It is abstract. 4、Which of the following is the best title for the text? So our aim is a fully autonomous (自动的) car that gets rid of the cause of most accidents: the driver. Researcher Hodgson points out, “For safety, the faster you can remove humans, the better, even if there are unfortunately a few accidents from new causes. It’s a question of balancing the number injured or killed by autonomous vehicles with the people whose lives are potentially saved.” It’s an idea that Elon Musk, chief executive of electric car company Tesla Motors, has long believed. His company is determined to be the first to deliver a fully autonomous vehicle to consumers. Last year, Musk announced that Tesla’s 2019 goal was “to do an example drive of full autonomy all the way from L. A.to New York, and have the car park itself. However, even Tesla admits that there are problems to overcome—the software needs further validation (批准生效) and the appropriate regulatory approval needs to be in place. Indeed, recent crashes of Tesla vehicles and Google cars confirm that the software isn’t ready yet. The UK government appears committed encouraging the development of autonomous vehicles. It’s supporting four city trials, publishing the Modern Transport Bill to reduce red tape around their introduction and adapting the legal system to take into account problems such as insurance liability when a human isn’t in control of a vehicle. The insurance industry is similarly eager to help increase autonomy in cars. As the Association of British Insurers points out, “Nearly 90 percent of road accidents are caused by human errors.” This costs motor insurers a shocking $20 million per day in claims. 1、What difficulty does the company Tesla Motors have? A.The company lacks confidence to make new creations. B.New inventions may cause more injuries and deaths. C.The software should be made officially acceptable. D.The traffic regulation has proved unreasonable. 2、What is the UK government’s attitude to autonomous cars? A.Cautious. B.Positive. C.Ambiguous. D.Disapproving. 3、What is the main idea of the last paragraph? A.Insurance companies would like to support autonomous cars. B.Human mistakes may be the key cause of traffic accidents. C.Traffic accidents waste insurance companies quite a lot. D.Motorists are surprised to hear about autonomous cars. 4、The purpose of writing the text is to ________. A.amuse readers with funny examples B.show his deep love for autonomous cars C.introduce a new development in technology D.provide a persuasive argument against autonomy 25.(10分)Rules —Any media (paints, crayon, pencil etc) may be used but no computer generated posters are allowed. —Poster size must be between 18 cm × 25 cm and 50 cm × 65 cm.
