Solar trees have metal " branches" extending from a tall , central pole at different levels. Each branch holds a photovoltaic (光电的) panel, also called a solar panel. These panels are flat surfaces that collect energy from the sun and turn it into electricity. Daljit Singh Bedi is the chief scientist at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, or CSIR , in New Delhi, India. The CSIR laboratories are where the solar tree was designed. Bedi says the shape of the solar tree makes it possible to fit more photovoltaic panels in a space than traditional systems do. "It takes about 4 square meters of space to produce energy which otherwise would have required 400 square meters of space," he says. Scientists believe the energy a solar tree collects will be enough to power five homes. The solar trees will make it easier to provide solar energy for homes in cities, they say. The solar trees will also take less space from farmers in rural areas. And they will collect more energy than normal photovoltaic panels on the tops of buildings, because their design helps with placement of solar panels in a way that they are exposed more to the sun. India is the world ' s third largest producer of greenhouse gases. The country has promised to reduce its rate of greenhouse gas production. The cost of photovoltaic panels has gone down in recent years. This has made solar power cheaper and easier to use. But it is still not clear how useful these new developments in solar power technology are. 1、Which picture can show the solar tree in the passage? A. B. C. D. 2、What does Bedi say about the solar trees? A.They are energy - consuming. B.They are space - saving. C.They are easily accessible. D.They have geographical limitation. 3、What makes the solar tree collect more energy? A.The hi - tech materials built in the panels. B.The number of panels fixed on it. C.The correct placement of the tree. D.The flexibilitv of its design. 4、What ' s the purpose of the passage? A.To introduce a new technological invention. B.To explain why scientists design solar trees. C.To describe the features of solar trees. D.To show the benefits of solar power technology. 23.(8分) This year marks the 170th anniversary of Paul Gauguin’s birth. He lived for just 54 years but he packed his brief life with activity. The French painter spent his early childhood in Peru before returning to France. As an adult, he continued to travel a lot. Most famously, he spent much of the last decade of his life in Tahiti, an island in southern Pacific Ocean. Indeed, Gauguin is best known for his colorful paintings of Tahitians and their culture. The restlessness of this great painter has been normal among modern artists since the middle of the 19th century. They’re never satisfied for long with a certain style or way of life. Once something becomes conventional, it’s turned down. The artistic culture that Gauguin developed from was that of Impressionism (印象派). Painters like Claude Monet had wanted to paint how they saw the world, not how their teachers taught them it should be seen. Gauguin, and similar artists like his friend Vincent van Gogh, moved even further away from “respectable” art than the Impressionists. For them, it was not simply a matter of seeing the world differently, but feeling and thinking about it differently, too. Gauguin saw, felt and thought differently from most members of European society. He thought that European culture was too fancy and not spontaneous. This is why he turned to the traditions of other parts of the world, like Africa, and, eventually, Tahiti. Artists like Gauguin used the word “primitive” for these cultures, but not as a negative term. For him, Europe, in becoming modem, industrial and scientific, seemed less natural than other parts of the world. In truth, Gauguin’s paintings may be unconventional but they are certainly not “primitive”. They are the work of a painter with great awareness of what he was doing. It was this awareness that made him such an important painter for those that came after, in the 20th century. When we look closely at the works of Gauguin we begin to understand Pablo Picasso, and especially Henri Matisse, a little better. 1、What can we infer about Gauguin’s life? A.He had an unhappy childhood. B.He lived most of his life in Peru. C.He enjoyed painting in Tahiti. D.He preferred a traditional life style. 2、What’s the main purpose of Paragraph 4? A.To explain why Gauguin’s works were popular. B.To point out where Gauguin’s inspiration came from. C.To show Gauguin’s different understanding of painting. D.To compare Gauguin’s painting style with Vincent van Gogh’s. 3、Which of the following best explains “spontaneous” underlined in Paragraph 5? A.Natural. B.Modern. C.Industrial. D.Scientific. 4、The author mentions Picasso and Matisse in the last paragraph to show ________. A.their styles are different from Gauguin’s B.great artists share many similarities C.they are as important as Gauguin D.Gauguin’s influence on their works 24.(8分)Nowadays with the popularity of the Internet many people complain of the difficulty of finding their “true” identity in amongst all the conflicting messages and demands of the world around them. This idea, that , somewhere deep down, is the “real” us, is as old as philosophy itself. It involves things like our values, our sense of purpose, the beliefs that make us who we are. We often ask the question, “Are you living the life you want to be living , or the life other people want you to live?” The Internet has brought the opinions of others to our own lives as never before, and it is threatening our ability to understand who we really are. To discover our true selves, maybe it’s time to disconnect. Not forever, that would be throwing the baby out with the bathwater, but for significant periods of our days, weeks, or months. Because, with disconnection comes quiet and with quiet comes the ability to reflect. In researching my World Service documentary Default World, I spoke to a lot of people about their experience of technology. Many said they were trying to spend less time online, taking a break from Facebook, connecting only when they needed to. And they spoke with pleasure of rediscovering the physical world around them and the world of human-to-human communication. I think this is encouraging. We are still learning how to be on the Internet, what effect this huge network of computers---a network we have built ourselves---has on our sense of self. We are at the moment, as Thoreau said of people in the industrial revolution, “tools of our tools”. Disconnecting gives us a chance to turn the tables to see the Internet not as something that overwhelms(使不知所措)us but as a tool, which we use when we need it. Only then can we really understand who we are and what we can give the world. And that, deep down, is the real toot of our identity. 1、What makes it difficult for us find the “real” us? A.The fast pace of our modem life. B.The flood of online messages. C.Losing our sense of purpose. D.Lacking values and beliefs. 2、What should we do first to discover our true selves according to the text? A.Spend time studying philosophy. B.Rediscover the physical world. C.Take a break from the Internet. D.Build a good social relationship. 3、What does the underlined phrase “turn the tables” in the last paragraph probably mean? A.To win a victory. B.To follow a trend. C.To change the situation. D.To solve the problem. 4、In which part of a newspaper can we read the text? A.Lifestyle. B.Nature. C.Science. D.Health. 25.(10分) Dolphins, African gray parrots and some other animals understand the idea of “zero,” but researchers were surprised to find that honeybees also comprehend this abstract concept, considering the insects’ tiny brains, according to a new study. Honeybees have fewer than one million neurons (神经元), compared with the 86 billion neurons in humans—and yet, they grasp a concept that humans, by some measures, don’t start to understand before preschool. The researchers set up two cards, each of which had a set of symbols on them, like triangles or circles. Then, they trained a group of the bees to fly to the card with the lower number of symbols. The bees quickly learned what the humans wanted them to do to get their delicious, sweet rewards. The trained bees were then shown a card that was empty and one that had symbols on it. There is no need for the bees to be trained to fly more often to the empty card—thus showing that they understood that “zero” was a number less than the others. Although they flew more often to an empty card than to one that had one symbol on it, it became easier for them to distinguish when the symbols on the card increased in number. For example, they more often flew to the zero when the other card had four symbols than when it had one. Perhaps these findings will explain the brain mechanism (机制) behind what allows us to understand the concept of “nothing,” Adrian Dyer, a researcher said. This understanding, in turn, could help in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) that also understands this concept. “If bees can understand ‘zero’ with a brain of less than a million neurons, it suggests there are simple, efficient ways to teach AI new tricks,” Dyer said in the statement. 1、What is a surprising finding for the researchers? A.Many animals also comprehend the meaning of “zero”. B.The number of neurons of honeybees is much smaller. C.Honeybees can understand “zero”
