Different countries and different people have different manners. We must find out their customs, so that they will not think us ill-mannered. Here are some examples of the things that a well-mannered person does or does not do.
If you visit a Chinese family you should knock at the door first. When the door opens, you'll not move before the host says “Come in, please!”. After you enter the room, you wouldn’t sit down until the host asks you to take a seat. When a cup of tea is put on a tea-table before you or sent to your hand, you’ll say “Thank you” and receive it with your two hands, not one hand, or they'll think you are ill-mannered.
Before entering a house in Japan, it is good manners to take off your shoes. In European countries, even though shoes sometimes become very dirty, this is not done. In a Malay (马来西亚的) house, a guest never finishes the food on the table. He leaves a little to show that he has had enough. In England, a guest always finishes a drink or the food to show that he has enjoyed it. This will make the host, especially the hostess pleased.
25. In China, when the host opens the door, ____ before he says “Come in, please!”
A. you won't leave B. you won't walk
C. you won't stand in front of him D. you won't get in
26. In European countries,____ when you get into a house.
A. you needn't take off your shoes B. you must take off your dirty shoes
C. you are not allowed to wear dirty shoes D. you should put on clean shoes
27. In a Malay house, a guest leaves a little food to show that ____.
A. he has enjoyed it B. he is quite full
C. he is not hungry at all D. he needs some drink
C
Around the world more and more people are taking part in dangerous sports and activities. Of course, there have always been people who have looked for adventures---those who have climbed the highest mountains, travelled into unknown parts of the world or sailed in small boats across the greatest oceans. Now, however, there are people who look for an immediate excitement from a risky activity which may only last a few minutes or even seconds.
I would consider bungee jumping to be a good example of such an activity. You jump from a high place (perhaps a bridge or a hot-air balloon) 200 metres above the ground with an elastic (有弹性的) rope tied to your ankles. You are at up to 150 kilometres an hour until the rope stops you from hitting the ground. It is said that about 2 million people around the world have now tried bungee jumping. Other activities, which most people would say are as risky as bungee jumping, include jumping from tall buildings and diving into the sea from the top of high cliffs.
Why do people take part in such activities as these? Some psychologists suggest that it is because life in modern societies has become safe and boring. Not very long ago, people's lives were constantly in danger. They had to go out and hunt for food, diseases could not easily be cured, and life was a continuous battle for survival.
Nowadays, according to many people, life offers little excitement. They live and work in comparatively safe conditions: they buy food in shops, and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill. The answer for some of these people is to look for danger in activities such as bungee jumping.
28. More and more people today _____.
A. are trying dangerous activities such as bungee jumping
B. are climbing the highest mountains
C. are coming close to death in sports
D. are looking for adventures such as travelling into unknown places
29. In bungee jumping, you _____.
A. jump as high as you
B. slide down a rope to the ground
C. tie yourself to a rope and fall without touching the ground
D. fall towards the ground without a rope
30. People probably take part in dangerous sports nowadays because ______.
A. they have a lot of free time
B. they can go to hospital if they are injured
C. their life is short of excitement
D. they no longer need to hunt for food
31. The passage mainly tells us _____.
A. how and why more people do dangerous sports
B. people don't like modern life
C. bungee jumping is really dangerous
D. people need excitement
D
Glynis Davis:
I first piled on the pounds when I was in the family way and I couldn't lose the afterwards. Then I joined a slimming club. My target was 140 pounds and I lost 30 pounds in six months. I felt great and people kept saying how good I looked. But Christmas came and I started to slip back into my old eating habits. I told myself I'd lose the weight at slimming classes in the new year---but it didn't happen. Instead of losing the pounds, I put them on. I'd lost willpower and tried to believe that the fish and chips didn't make any difference but the scales don't tell lies.
Roz Juma:
To be honest, I never weigh myself any more. I've learnt to be happy with myself. It seemed to me that I would feel sorry about every spoonful of tasty food that passed my lips. My idea is simple. You shouldn't be too much thinking about food and dieting. Instead, you should get on with life and stop dreaming of a super-thin body. This is obviously the size I've meant to be and, most of all, I'm happy with it.
Lesley Codwin:
I was very happy about winning Young Slimmer of the Year. I'd look in the mirror unable to believe this slim lady was me! That might have been my problem--perhaps from then on I didn't pay any attention to myself. Winning a national competition makes everything worse, though, because you feel the eyes of the world are fixed upon you. I feel a complete failure because I've put on weight again.
Ros Langfod:
Before moving in with my husband Gavin, I'd always been about 110 pounds, but the pleasant housework went straight to my waist and I put on 15 pounds in a year. Very often I try to go on a diet "I'm really good for a few days, then end up having the children's leftovers or eating happily chocolate---my weakness. I'd like to be slim, but right now my duty is the children and home. I might take more exercise when my kids are older.
32. The four women are all talking about _____.
A. their life as a housewife B. their different diets
C. their attitudes towards marriage D. their own slimming matter
33. Where are these short passages most likely to be taken from?
A. Advertisements for children. B. Talks on the air.
C. Books in a library. D. Magazines for children.
34. What does the underlined word "scales" (in Paragraph 1) possibly mean?
A. Coaches in Glynis Davis' slimming club. B. Glynis Davis' pet dog
C. Tools to measure weight. D. Glynis Davis' husband.
35. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the short passages?
A. Ros Langfod put on weight soon after she got married.
B. Roz Juma cares much about a super-thin body.
C. Glynis Davis put on weight when she joined a slimming club.
