Language points
1. In China, being modest is a virtue. 在中国,谦虚是一种美德。
being modest 动名词做主语。
e.g..做锻炼对你的健康有好处。Doing sports is good for your health
2. If someone praises you and says that your English is excellent. 如果有人赞美你,说你的英语很好。
praise n. & v. 称赞;。praise常构成词组:praise sb. for sth. 或praise sb. for doing sth. 表示“因(做)某事赞扬某人”。
e.g. I praise my students for good work.
我为学生有好的表现而表扬他们。
市长赞扬这个男孩很勇敢。
The mayor ______ the boy ______ his courage.
答案:praised for
3. This is usually a sign of being weak and not confident. 这通常是懦弱和不自信的表现.
be confident of 对...事有信心,确信...(指对某具体的事有信心。
同义have confidence in sth.
be confident to 后接人,是某人对某人很有信心的意思
4. Different Manners. 各种各样的礼貌。
1) manner的意思是“方式,态度,习惯”。 eg;他以恰当的方式跟我说话。 He spoke to me in a proper manner.
2) 表示“礼貌,礼仪,风度,规矩,风俗;生活方式”时,要用manners。 eg: 如果没礼貌,你就不会受到别人尊重。 If you have no manners, you will not be respected by others.
5. Joe is an English name that sounds like Zhou . “Joe” 是一个听起来像“周” 的英文名字。
1) sound 作系动词,后跟形容词,表示“听起来”。
2) sound 后还可跟as if 从句。 eg: 她说话的声音像个十岁的女孩。 She sounds as if she were a ten-year-old girl.
5. I think understanding culture differences really helps us to understand each other, live together and work together. 我认为了解文化差异确实有助于我们互相理解、共同生活、一起工作。
1) 由and 和or 连接的并列动词不定式,第二个及其后的动词不定式的to 可以省略。eg: I want to call on him and discuss the question again.
2) 如果两个动词不定式的to 可以省略。
