2 Present the topic of reading – earthquake

Show some pictures of earthquakes
3 Teach some new words:
The teacher ask the students: What happened during the earthquake?

Step 3 Reading
1. Get the students to skim the article and find the answer to the question:
Did Timmy give up or try his best to survive when he was in danger during the earthquake?
2 .Read the article for detailed information
1) When the earthquake came, what did Timmy feel/ hear/see/do?
2) How did Timmy save himself after he was trapped?
3) How did other people save Timmy?
3.Read the article for further understanding
1) Listen to the tape and finish Exercises C, textbook Page 97
2) Read with feelings and finish Exercises D, textbook Page 97
Step 4 Practice
Play the tape for the students to listen and repeat. Then get the students to read the article loudly.
Ask the students to discuss : How to save yourselves when you are in danger?
Step 5 Sum up
1. We know about Timmy’s whole story.
2. We learn some important phrases and sentences.
3. We know how to save ourselves when we are in danger.
Step6 Exercises & Homework
Think of ways of saving yourself during other natural disasters, write them down .
Do the exercises in Part B, Page 96.
Try to say something about the main idea of the article.
Discuss the topic in pairs

You should calm down and think what the best way to escape is , so that you can stay alive .
7 Suppose you are in danger , that means there are lots of bricks around you , you can’t move your body , you’re trapped . What are you going to do ?
8 If you have a packet of chocolate , you’re hungry ,are you going to eat it ? Why or why not ?
Step 3 Reading
Get the students to read the article and make lists of words and phrases used in the text that describe noise and movement /destruction ,fear and hope
Such as : noise : big noise ,thunder , screamed , real noise , bombs ,shouted
movement : slight shaking earth started to shake ,run wildly , pieces of glass bricks fell down ,walls began to come down .
fear : screamed frightened dark a moment of fear
Step 4 Explaining
Deal with the problems the students may have.
1 do some shopping such as : do some washing /cleaning /reading etc.
2 feel a slight shaking 感到一阵轻微的震动。
3 in fear 害怕地 。相似的结构有:in trouble , in need , in danger ,in hungry etc.
For example : I closed my eyes in fear .
Step 5 Practice :
Do some exercises on the paper to consolidate the points we learned . Then check the answers (见达标检测)
Do the exercises in Part B on page 96. check the answers with the students.
Step 6.Sum up
1. We know more about the important phrases
2. After learning the whole story, we can retell it
Step 7 Homework :
1 Recite the story about Timmy.
2 Learn to use the words and phrases skillfully.
3 Write something about Timmy (about 60 words)
3 Prepare for Vocabulary and learn some words about weather .
