2. My dog keeps me out when I return home at weekends.
3. My sister argues with me on every thing I do at home.
4. My mom calls my teachers up very often.
5. My little brother surprises me when I open the door.
6. My parents can’t pay for my books and clothes.
7. I can’t bake bread.
8. I fail my English exams.
9. I get on my new bike.
10. My teacher always complains to my parents about my lessons.
11. My mom will send me to study in Japan.
3a Reading and underlining
Lonely Kid wrote a letter to a newspaper advice column. Now read the letter on your own. While reading, remember to cut/ the sentence into thought groups, study all the predicates, circle all the linking words and underline all the expressions.
Useful expressions from the letter
have a problem, need your help, be popular at school, plan a birthday party for my best friend, everyone else in the class, be invited except me, do… wrong
Now let’s write as they do in the text. We are going to write in imitation of the text we have just learned.
Write as they do. (仿写)
3b Thinking and filling
You are to think of some advice to help the “Lonely Kid”. Fill in the blanks in Mary’s letter.
Dear Lonely Kid,
There are a lot of things you could do. You could call your friends to ask to be invited. They may have forgotten to invite you. Or maybe you should go shopping to buy some gifts for the one who is going to celebrate his birthday. Send the gifts to him. That way, they would invite you to the birthday parties next time.
Good luck!
3c Writing and reading
There is an advice column in the school weekly paper. Now you have some real or imaginary problems. You will write to ask for advice.
4 GROUPWORK
What problems do you have in studies and in life? Now you will read the statements on page 14 and choose one of them. And then in groups of five, ask your classmates for advice.
Problems and advice

Your best friend is more popular than you.→You should try to make as many friends as possible in class from now on.
You lost your sports clothes.→You could report it to the head teacher. He may help you to find your lost clothes back.
You don’t know where your ID card is.→Why don’t you look for it under your bed?
You don’t want to have P.E. classes.→You must go to take your P.E. classes. They may be good to your health and studies.
Your parents always argue.→Why don’t you call the police when they argue next time?
A: Dear Teacher Li, I have a problem, and I need your help.
B: What’s the matter with you?
A: I always thought I was popular at school.
B: But you just found out that your friends were planning a birthday party for your best friend, and they didn’t invite me, did they?
A: You are right. How did you get to know that?
B: I know that everyone else in the class was invited except you.
A: And I don’t know why. I can’t think what I did wrong. I’m very upset and don’t know what to do.
B: What do I think? I think you are wrong. They sent you an invitation card by email.
A: Really. I don’t get online these days. I am busy with my lessons.
B: they ask me to tell you that you are invited.
A: Thank you. I will read the email soon. Thank you again.
