The incident took place, believe it or not, on the playground. I was something of a football player, but I had never been a good player, far less a great one. I played for the mere physical joy that I got out of the game, but I played with a will, and put my whole heart into the game. The Curious Origins of the Dollar Sign
The dollar sign is among the world’s most powerful symbols and represents far more than U.S. currency. Yet despite its common appearance in various languages, the origins of the dollar sign remain far from clear. And the dollar sign was in use before the United State was born.
In 1520, the Kingdom of Bohemia began making coins using silver from a mine in Joachimsthal —which is roughly translated from German into English as Joachim’s valley. Logically, the coin was named the Joachimsthaler, which was then shortened to Thaler, the word that proceeded to spread around the world. It was the Dutch variation, the Daler, that made its way across the Atlantic in the pockets and on the tongues of early immigrants, and today’s American-English pronunciation of the word “dollar” still has its echoes. However, it is no straightforward answer to the question of where the dollar sign ($) sprang from.
One of the origin stories links it back to the Bohemian “Thaler”, which featured a huge snake on Christian cross (基督教十字架). It was an indirect reference to the story of Moses, who was a prophet in the Bible, winding a bronze snake around a pole in order to cure people who’d been bitten. The dollar, so it’s said, originated from that sign.
Yet the most widely accepted theory in fact involves coins used in Spain, and it goes like this: In the colonies, trade between Spanish Americans and English Americans was lively, and the PESO was legal money in the U.S. until 1857. It was often shortened to the initial “P” with an “S” hovering beside and a little above it. Nowadays, instead of scrolling (滚屏) through apps like TikTok and Instagram all day on a smartphone, many people begin to use a so-called “dumb phone ” according to the latest report, and seventeen-year-old Robin West is one of them.
Dumb phones are basic devices, with very limited functionality compared to an iPhone. Typically, you can only make and receive calls and text messages. And if you are lucky, you can also listen to the radio and take very basic photos, but definitely you cannot connect to the Internet or apps.
Robin West’s decision to rid himself of the former smartphone two years ago was out of a sudden urge. “I didn’t notice how much a smartphone was taking over my life until I bought a dumb phone. Outdated for a while with the appearance of smartphones, dumb phones are now regaining popularity. A 2021 study said that one in ten mobile phone users in the UK had a dumb phone. “Many of us once had a dumb phone as our first mobile phone and TikTok videos remind us of that, so it’s natural that we feel a sense of nostalgia (怀旧) towards these classic markers, which have a part to play in dumb phones’ revival (再流行),” said a mobile expert.
One maker of dumb phones is The Light Phone. Slightly cleverer than the norm for such products, it has handsets that do allow users to listen to music and podcasts, and connect by Bluetooth to headphones. Yet the firm promised that its phones “will never have social media click bait news, email or a web browser”.
Light co-founder, Kaiwei Tang, says that, surprisingly, the firm’s main customers are aged between 25 and 35. He says he was expecting buyers to be much older.
