Step I Revision
This activity deals with the revision of five kinds of sentence structures and using the simple present tense to talk about the future.
T: Now let’s analyze the following sentences.
1. These swans are flying.
2. The students are watching birds.
3. Doing a bird count is interesting.
4. Sandy gave the doves some food.
5. I found the article on wildlife easy.
Then check for the dialogue about organizing a school trip to review the simple present tense used to talk about the future.
Step II Lead-in and presentation
This activity leads to the new target language.
Now look at the sentences on the screen, and pay attention to the words underlined and tell what part of speech each of them is.
1. The girl looks beautiful. She dances beautifully.
2. He is careful when he drives. He drives carefully.
3. The student is good to others. He studies well.
4. The birds are comfortable when they live in Zhalong Nature Reserve all year round. Many of them live comfortably in the wetland.
5. The lady is gentle. She smiles gently.
1) Ss tell what part of speech each of the pair words is, then learn its function in the sentence, and they know the function of an adjective and an adverb.
2) Learn to form adverbs of manner as follows
a. gentle – gently possible – possibly comfortable – comfortably
b. quiet – quietly bad – badly bright – brightly careful – carefully
clear – clearly free – freely loud – loudly nice – nicely
pleasant – pleasantly polite – politely slow – slowly soft – softly
strong – strongly close – closely correct – correctly neat – neatly
c. angry – angrily easy – easily noisy – noisily heavy – heavily
happy – happily
Step III Practice
Let Ss fill in the 15 blanks and write down the adverbs from the adjectives. After that, each of them only uses one of them to make a sentence.
They can exchange their sentences, and then ask them to copy down on the blackboard to share them with the whole class.
1. She sings nicely.
2. It is raining heavily.
3. It blew strongly.
4. He shouted loudly.
5. They played happily.
6. We can do the work easily.
7. They cried noisily.
8. The baby smiles gently.
9. We watched the birds carefully.
10. The students can speak English freely.
11. He said to his teacher politely.
12. They ran slowly.
13. The boys jumped excitedly.
14. She dresses herself neatly.
15. He hurt badly.
Step IV Pair-work
1. Give the adverbs of manner in the box and do C on page 84.
2. Pair-work. Let Ss practise the short dialogues.
Sample I:
S1: You sing nicely
S2: Thank you.
S2: You write neatly.
S1: Thanks a lot.
Sample II:
S1: What did she say?
S2: I don’t know. She spoke very softly.
S2: What did Sandy sing?
S1: I don’t know. She sang fast.
After that two groups can act their dialogues out in class.
Step V Consolidation
T: Well done. Now, let’s come to the exercises C2 and C3. You can use your adverbs of manner in your writing.
Ss do the exercises C2 and C3, then the teacher check them in class.
Step VI Exercise in class
Fill in the blanks using adverbs of manner to complete the passage.
Last Sunday we visited the Red Star Form. Early in the morning the sun rose (gently, gentle), as we got on the school bus. On the way to the farm, we talked (excited, excitedly) and sun (happy, happily). After half an hour, we arrived at the farm gate. Some farmers welcomed us (warm, warmly). They showed us around the farm. There we saw crops grow (strong, strongly) and (good, well). Some farmers worked (hard, hardly), and they even greeted us (polite, politely). They taught us how to do farm work (correct, correctly). We thank them whole-heartedly. At noon, the sun shone (bright, brightly). We said goodbye to them (loud, loudly) and took our school bus to return to our school. Today we felt (pleasant, pleasantly) and had a good time.
Step VII Homework
Write down 8 sentences in exercise C3 on page 85 on their notebooks.
