Teaching Aims:
1. To learn the important words: different, habit, present, send, concert, magazine,
choose, clothes.
2. To learn the usage of always, usually, often, never.

Unit 1Tony always likes birthday parties.
Vocabulary and listening
1. Match the words with the picture.
①Read through the words in the box and have the students repeat them after you.
②Make sure they understand the meaning of the words.
③Ask them to match the words and the picture individually, then check with a partner.
④Call back the answers in a whole-class setting.
2. Listen and check (√) what people usually do on their birthday.
①Make sure the students understand the symbols they must use to complete the chart.
②Play the recording through once while they just listen.
③Play it again for them to write the answers. They can then check with a partner.
④Play the recording again for them to check and complete their charts.
⑤Call back the answers from the whole class and complete a charts.
⑥Call back the answers from the whole class and complete a chart on the board as they tell you.
3. Work in pairs. Say what you always/usually/often/never do on your birthday.
①Read through the verbs and have the students repeat them.
Make sure they understand them.
②Ask the students to think about what they do, and make a list using the adverbs of frequency individually.
③Pair them to talk about what they do.
④Call back some answers from the whole class.
4. Listen and read.
①Ask the students to read the conversation silently. At this stage, it’s a good idea not to explain every word they don’t understand.
②Play the recording and ask the students to listen and read the conversation.
Extension:
①Play the recording again and pause after each phrase, asking the students to repeat chorally and individually.
②Put the students into groups of four to practise the dialogue.
③They should repeat it several times, changing roles each time.
5. Check (√) the true sentences.
①Read through the sentences and have the students follow and repeat.
②Ask them to check the correct answers and then check with partner.
③Call back the answers from the whole class.

Learning to learn
①Point out this phenomenon to the students using these examples and others which are relevant. (e.g. course book, school desk, science lesson etc)
②Suggest that the students keep a separate page in their notebooks to note down such words.
3. Complete the sentences:
①Ask the students to chose just one present for the people when writing these sentences.
②Once they have written them, they can exchange books with a partner for peer correction of facts and language.
③Call back the answers from the whole class.
Writing and speaking:
4. Write these sentences with (apostrophe).
①Elicit from the students the occasions when apostrophes are used in English: When a letter is left out, e.g. isn’t =is not, and for possessives, e.g. the boy’s room/the boys’ room.
②Ask the students to do the activity individually then check with a partner.
③Call back the answers, having the students read out the sentences and say where the apostrophes go, or come to the board to write them.

②Suggest that they keep notes of what their partner says.
