I.Teaching Title
Module8 My past life Unit2 I was born in Quincy.
II. Teaching Background
Students: 30 junior middle school students, Grade 7
Lesson duration: 45 minutes
III.Teaching Aims
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
know how to use was/were correctly in past tense.
know how to talk about things in the past.
search for information in the text by skimming and scanning.
be brave to speak English in the class.
solve problems by cooperating with other students in learning English.
IV. Teaching Important Points
1. Key vocabulary: bedroom, garden, kitchen, movie theater(film theater), pond, store(shop), favorite(favourite), etc.
2. Key structure: There were lots of things to do in Quincy.
There was a big garden with lots of trees.
3. Grammar: the usage of was and were in past tense.
V. Teaching Difficult Points
Students would be slow in how to ask general questions and answer them with was and were.

VIII.Teaching Procedures
Step1 Greetings and lead-in
Greet the students and introduce myself. Ask several students “where were you born?”.
Then show the pictures of John Adams and John William Adams on the screen. Give simple introduction of them to the students and ask students to guess their birth place from their names, thus lead to the lesson.
Words on the screen:
John Adams and his son John Quincy Adams were two presidents of the USA.
The son was called John Quincy Adams because of his father's name and the place where he was born.
NOW, can you guess: where were they born?
Step2 Match the words with their meanings
1.Ask students to do Activity2 on the text book, and match the words with their meanings.
2.Give some time to students for them to check their answers and get familiar with these words.
Step3 Do a little game.
1.Ask one student to stand in front of the back blackboard and turn his back to the screen and the whole class. Put the word cards in front of him. And ask the other students to read the sentences from the screen for him so that he can choose the word with the meaning he hears and stick it to the blackboard. On the blackboard, there are numbers 1-8 written on it beforehand, so that the students can match the words with the numbers.
2.If the student chooses the right answer, ask other students say “yes”; if he chooses the wrong word, other students say “no”.
3.Check the answers and compare American English “movie theater” and “store” with British English “cinema” and “shop”.
Step4 Reading.
1.Ask the students to read the passage quickly to get the general idea.
2.Give five sentences on the screen and ask students to work with their partners to match them with the paragraphs.
3.Give each group of students a card with A,B,C,D or E, standing for the five paragraphs. Then ask each group to stick their card to the numbers of sentences on the back blackboard.
4.Check the answers with the whole class.
Step5 listening and answering the questions
1.Ask students to close their books and listen to the tape.
2.After listening to each paragraph, ask students to answer questions for that paragraph with “Yes, …was/were.” or “No, …wasn't/weren't.”
Questions for each paragraph:
A.Was Betty born in Quincy?
Was Quincy a town in England?
Were there any football or baseball teams in Quincy?
B.Were the US presidents John Adams and his son John Quincy Adams born in Quincy?
Can people visit their old family houses?
C.Was Betty's house small?
Were there posters of movie stars on the kitchen walls?
D.Was there a big garden?
Was there a pond in the garden?
E.Were there lots of children?
Was Quincy Betty's last home in the USA?
Was year 2009 the last time Betty was in Quincy?
Step6 Understanding of the two important sentence patterns in the text book.
1.Give brief explanations of each question with other examples.
2.Ask students to finish exercises on the handouts.
Explanation and exercises:
There were lots of things to do in Quincy.(在昆西有很多事情可以做。)
I have lots of homework to do. (我你有很多家庭作业要做。)
Do you have anything to eat? (你有什么东西可以吃吗?)

Students could cooperative with their partners actively and it seems that they liked this kind of way to learn English.
