The greatest wonder of the natural world
When we arrived, it was later afternoon and it was snowing. We got out of the train, went through a village and walked along a country road. In the west, the sky was becoming dark, but beside the road, it was still very bright. I knew it was there, but there was nothing to find.
After about two kilometres, a villager appeared in front of us. “Are we going the right way?” we asked. He knew where we were going. “Yes,” he replied, “you'll get there in ten minutes.” Finally, we came to some trees, and stopped. We looked carefully through them, but there was still nothing to see.
Suddenly, the clouds cleared and the snow stopped. The sun set behind us and beyond the trees. We saw that the ground fell away and down to a river, far below us. The Yellow River, one of the wonders of the natural world.
We looked down to the Yellow River about 2 kilometres below us. If you put the three tallest buildings in the world at the bottom of the river, they still won't reach the top. Then we looked across to the other side of the river. How wide is it? It's 500 meters, maybe more. Finally, we looked to our left and to our right, and on both sides the river disappeared into the distance ... over 5464 kilometres long. The Yellow River is not just long. It’s great!
That evening on the edge of the river, I asked myself a question. It's not “How deep is it?” or “How wide is it?” or “How long is it?” but “Is the Yellow River the greatest wonder anywhere in the natural world?” I know the answer. But what do you think?
■Close down by reading about the Yellow River
The Yellow River rises on the northern side of the Bayankela Mountains of Qinghai and flows through nine provinces or autonomous regions including Qinghai, Gansu, Sichuan, Ningxia, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Henan, and Shandong. The river falls 4,450 m over a length of 5,465 km, covering an area of 795,000 km2. In its upper parts it flows through swamps and grasslands of Ningxia and Inner Mongolia. The river runs to the south before leaving Inner Mongolia to form the part between Shaanxi and Shanxi and, after a sharp turn to the east, it flows across the North China Plain to the Bohai Sea.
