Hello, class. Before we read the letter on page 58, we shall first try to write something. We shall try to write a short passage with all the words that are listed in the top left corner of page 58. bright, coast, field, funny, grape, ham, hill, lamb, outback, relative, sheep, spirits, surfing, wine I went to Dalian last Sunday and I stayed there for three days. To me Dalian is a really beautiful city with small hills and blue seas. The sky is so bright with no pollution. The coast is crowded with visitors form all over China. The field is so green and clean that it looks like a picture. I stayed at my relative’s for the night. In the daytime I went shopping in the streets and surfing at the sea. I bought some wine for my father made from grapes that are grown locally in Dalian. I had some wonderful Dalian dishes like sea fish and menzi, a typical local food. I asked for ham and lamb, too. But I was told they are not Dalian food. For no sheep are raised there. I felt hot one afternoon and I bought a drink locally made. But it made me feel funny. I think life in Dalian is different from the outback life in my place, but I like Dalian and its spirits. ■Read the passage and answer the questions. On page 58 is a letter by Tony to his parents about Australia. Now start reading it. While reading, try to: cut/ the sentence into thought groups, study the predicative, darken the connectives and underline all the useful expressions. (阅读过程中,断开/意群,观察谓语构成,圈出连词,摘录短语搭配。) Useful expressions (有用的短语搭配) Write…to…from…, the centre of…, at the moment, stay near…, the … name for…, on the first day, take a helicopter tour over…, be was surprised at…, 3.6 kilometres long, 348 metres high, the colors of…, at different times, change from…to…, the first people of…, the ancient Aboriginal stories, describe the spirits, create the world, have many British relatives, bee like… in many ways, the family life, be similar to…, enjoy the same food and hobbies, make… in the south of…, love all sports, love… the most, live near…, love going to…, very bright, near the coast, sheep in the fields and on the hills, like a desert, full of…, speak English, have some special expressions, such as…, worry about…, the next day after…, arrive at…, go on a camel ride, ride a camel, have a bad temper, get very tired, very funny, keep lying down ■ Put the text into a dialogue. After reading comes speaking. Then what are we to speak about? We are to speak about Australia. We shall be Dad and Tony. They are talking about Australia over the phone. Dad: (over the phone)What are you doing? Tony: I'm writing an email to my mum. Dad: Where are you now? Tony: At the moment I’m staying near Uluru. Dad: What’s that? Tony: That’s the Aboriginal name for Ayers Rock. Dad: Where did you go these days? Tony: On the first day, I took a helicopter tour over the rock, and I was surprised at how big it was. It was: 3.6 kilometres long and 348 metres high. Dad: What’s the color? Tony: The colors of the rock are fantastic. Dad: What do you mean by that? Tony: At different times they change from purple to red. Dad: What about the people there? Tony: The Aborigines are the first people of Australia, and the ancient Aboriginal stories describe the spirits that created the world. Dad: Are the Australians like us? Tony: Yes, they are. The Australians have many British relatives, too. And they’re like us in other ways. Dad: For example? Tony: Their family life is similar to ours, and they enjoy the same food and hobbies. The food and drink that most Australians like are grapes, lamb, ham and especially wine that they make in the south of the country. Dad: I see. Then do they love sports? Tony: Yes, they do. But the games that they love the most are football, cricket and rugby. Dad: What other sports do they like? Tony: Because most Australians live near the coast, they love going to the beach, swimming and surfing. Dad: What season it is now there? Tony: Although it's December, it's summer over here. Dad: So the sunshine is very bright? Tony: Yes, it is. And near the coast the country is very green. There are lots of sheep in the fields and on the hills, but the outback is more like a desert, full of rocks and sand. Dad: I think most Australians speak English. Do you have any difficulties understanding them? Tony: No, not at all. Dad: Why? But they speak Australian English! Tony: Although they have some special expressions such as “Good day!” and “No worries, mate.” They mean “Hello!” and “Don't worry about it. It’s not a problem!” I can understand them with no difficulty. Dad: What else did you do there? Tony: The next day after I arrived at Uluru, I went on a camel ride. Dad: Camel? It’s funny. Tell me more about that. Tony: The camel that I rode had a bad temper, and I got very tired. Everyone else thought it was very funny that my camel kept lying down. Dad: By the way your mum is back from work. Speak to her, ok? Tony: Ok. I’d like to tell my mum something else about Australia. ■ Close down by writing a letter of your own. To end this period try to write a letter of your own. You may write as Tony writes, making use of the same structures and the same expressions. Dear Mum and Dad, I'm writing this letter to you from the centre of Shanxi. At the moment we're staying near Wutai Shan——that’s the name for a famous mountain with five tops. It’s famous for its temples. On the first day, we took a helicopter tour over the mountain, and I was surprised at how big it was. It was 250 square kilometers and 3058 metres high at its north top. The colors of the mountain are fantastic, and at different times they change from green to grey. The Wutai Ren are the first people of Wutai Shan, and the ancient Wutai stories describe the spirits that created the mountain. The Wutai Ren have many relatives in other parts of China. They’re like us in many ways. Their family life is similar to ours, and they enjoy the same food and hobbies. The food and drink that most Wutai Ren like are corns, millet, pork, and especially wine that they make from millet in the center of the mountain. They love all sports, but the games that they love the most are mountain climbing, walking and running. Because most Wutai Ren live in the mountain, they love going to the mountain sides, planting trees and picking mushrooms. Although it's December and it's winter over here, the sunshine is very bright. And near the mountain the country is very green. There are lots of sheep in the fields and on the hills, but the outback is more attractive, full of temples and visitors. Most Wutai Ren speak Wutai dialect. Although they have some special expressions I can understand them easily. The next day after we arrived at Wutai Shan, we went on a donkey ride. The donkey that I rode had a bad temper, and I got very tired. Everyone else thought it was very funny that my donkey kept lying down ...
