■ Warm up by learning about sentence components.
Hello, class. I am glad to be with you again. I hope you work hard at your lessens and be happy in and out of school.
To begin with we shall go over the making of a sentence. As we learned last term a sentence is made up of several parts. The subject comes at the beginning part. The predicative comes after the subject. And the object follows the predictive.
Look at the following sentences.
He (subject) started (predicative) a school magazine (object) last week.
We (subject) showed (predicative) her (indirect object) his new camera(direct object).
His diary (subject) made (predicative) her (object) very sad (object complement).
■ Listen and read.
On page 2 is a conversation between Betty, Daming, Lingling and Tony. Now let’s go on to read it first. While reading, try to: cut/ the sentence into thought groups, study the predicative, darken the connectives and underline all the useful expressions. (阅读过程中,断开/意群,观察谓语构成,圈出连词,摘录短语搭配。)

■Act out the conversation on page 2.
Now we are going to do something interesting. We shall try to act out the conversation on page 2 in groups. Who will be Betty? Who will be Tony? OK. Let’s begin!
■Talk as they do. (仿说)
We are going to make a conversation of our own. We shall base our own conversation on the one we read and listened to just now.
Betty: OK, come in and sit down!
Daming: What's happening?
Lingling: We're having a discussion.
Daming: That's news to me! I'm writing my book. What's it about?
Lingling: The village magazine.
Daming: What village magazine?
Betty: Right, listen up, everyone. Did anyone watch television this morning? Did you see the interview with Wang Huaming?
Lingling: He works for the village plant. He's my favourite farmer writer.
Tony: Yes, I saw it. He went to our class!
Betty: Well, he started a village magazine called New Farmers when he was a farmer here. So why don't we start a family magazine, too? I've written down some ideas. We'll write a diary of family events, and tell everyone about the family concert and the photo club.
Tony: And family tennis matches.
Lingling: But who will write the articles?
Betty: We'll write the articles. Any more ideas?
Tony: I know! I'll do some reviews about our favourite village events and farming events!
Lingling: And I'll do an interview with Wang Huaming!
Betty: Brilliant! Anyone else?
Daming: How about “Farmwork Help”?
Tony: Yes, some ideas on how to get things done faster and better!
Lingling: What's your book, Daming?
Daming: I'm writing a book called “I love being a farmer here”. I'm reading about the ancient history of our village.
Betty: “Farmwork Help” I think that's a fantastic idea, Darning.
■Change the conversation into a short article. (改写)
Again the conversation. But this time we shall do something difficult. We shall try to turn the conversation into an article.
Betty asked Daming to come in and sit down. Daming wanted to know what is happening at Betty’s home. Lingling told Daming that they were having a meeting. Daming said that was news to him! He said he was doing his homework. He wanted to know what it was about. Lingling said to him the meeting was about the school magazine. Daming wanted to know what school magazine it was. Betty told him to listen up. She asked if anyone watched television the last evening. She asked if anyone saw the interview with Becky Wang. Lingling answered that she sang with the band Crazy Feet. She was her favourite singer. Tony said that he saw it, too. He said Becky Wang went to his school one day! Betty then said that Becky Wang had started a school magazine called New Standard when she was a pupil there. So Betty wanted to start a school magazine, too. Betty had written down some ideas. She said they would write a diary of school events, and tell everyone about the school concert and the dance club. Tony added that school basketball matches could also be covered. Lingling wanted to know who would write the articles. Betty answered that they would all write the articles. Betty wanted to know if anyone had any more ideas. Tony replied that he would do some reviews about their favourite bands and movies. Lingling said she would an interview with Becky Wang. Betty said it was a brilliant idea. Daming asked to know if “Homework Help'“ was OK. Tony agreed to Daming’s suggestions. And he wanted to read some ideas on how to get good grades in the magazine. Lingling asked about Daming’s homework. Daming told her he was writing a composition called “What is a wonder of the world?” He said that he was reading about the ancient pyramids in Egypt. Betty was happy with the name of “Homework Help”. She thought that was a fantastic idea.
