Last weekend I was going shopping at the local supermarket as I do every Saturday. I was absorbed in my own thoughts when I overheard one of the employees say, “let me shake your hand to thank for your service!”
I looked up and saw the employee, who was a tall man in his thirties, shaking the hand of an elderly man who was wearing a “World War Two veteran(老兵)”hat. As they started talking in a friendly way, I stood there and listened.
The veteran said he was 85 this year. When the employee and I expressed surprise, he took out his driver’s license to prove It. This man was sharp as a tack and seemed to be in great physical shape. It was obvious that he had a good sense of humor when he was talking to us!
The three of us stood there for about 15 minutes, just chatting about the veteran’s war experiences many years ago. He described the feeling he had when Germany surrendered in the war, how young he was when he joined the service, and all the places he had visited all over the world. He was so fascinating to me!
During this conversation, I stood there attracted by this man and his stories--- this living piece of history right before me. I too shook his hand and thanked him for his selfless service during the war years
Just before we said goodbye, he told us that his goal in life was to put a smile on at least one person’s face every day. If he could do that, he could go to sleep happily.I made sure that he knew that he had made my day.

The beginning of a love story
Lin was born in Shanghang County, Longyan in Fujian Province. He first met Xie Xingfang when he was 14-years-old. 16-year-old Xie was attending a national youth team badminton training camp in Jinjiang, Fujian and Lin was also there.
Tall and beautiful, Xie became the Snow White in the heart of Lin Dan, and he tried to please her and get chances to chat with her after the training sessions. He did not go beyond that. Before the Spring Festival in 2004, Lin finally mustered the courage and sent Xie Xingfang a text message—I LOVE YOU. Many people have low iron in their blood. But pregnant women need extra iron for their own health and their baby's health.Iron is important to the development of a baby's brain and central nervous system. In poor countries, however, providing all pregnant women with iron supplements can be a financial issue. Some experts say giving supplements to babies after they are born is enough.
Someone who disagrees is Parul Christian, a nutritionist at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in Maryland. She and other scientists have been doing research in Nepal. The researchers first completed a study among poor women in Nepal ten years ago. During pregnancy some of the women received supplements containing iron and another micronutrient, folic acid. Professor Christian says that study showed the supplements could improve child survival. Now the children are older. The researchers returned to Nepal and tested their neurological (神经的)development. They found improved intellectual and fine motor abilities among those whose mothers had received iron supplements during pregnancy.
Another new study, published in the journal Pediatrics, looks at levels of vitamin D in babies. It says newborns with the lowest levels were twice as likely to develop respiratory infections(呼吸道感染)as those with normal levels of vitamin D. Vitamin D helps build strong bones and strengthens the body's defenses against disease. The vitamin is commonly added to cow's milk and also found in supplements. But vitamin D is the sunshine vitamin. The body naturally produces it from sunlight.
Carlos Camargo from Harvard Medical School in Massachusetts and other researchers did the study. It followed more than nine hundred children in New Zealand until they were five years old. They found that children who had the lowest levels of vitamin D had a high risk of developing infections and wheezing through childhood. Carlos Camargo say the problem of vitamin D deficiency is not limited to countries with the least sun.
27 Why is vitamin D called the sunshine vitamin?
A Because it is very useful.
B Because it is very important for people

D Because it can be produced by the body due to sunshine
