Grammar 2
Objectives
To recognize possessive adjectives and pronouns
To recognize the possessive case of nouns
Step 1. Free talk
Step 2. Revision
Revise the types and the structures of the sentences.
Step 3. Presentation
1. Revise the use of personal pronouns in subject form and object form. Ask students to draw a table with the following four columns:
Personal pronoun (subject form)
Personal pronoun (object form)
Possessive adjective
Possessive pronoun
2. Go through the possessive adjectives table. Use gestures to illustrate the meaning of each possessive adjective one at a time. Use familiar items around the classroom for illustration, e.g.
This is my… Is this your…?
This is our classroom. Is that her…?
3. Explain the difference between ‘it’s’ and ‘its’. Tell students that ‘its’ refers to things that belong to animals or things but not to male or female nouns, e.g.
‘The dog wags its tail to show that it’s happy.’
‘We can’t use this desk. Its legs are broken.’
‘This watch is very expensive because its strap is made of gold.’
4. Ask students to write a few questions and answers in pairs. Check
by walking around the classroom. Then ask a few pairs to read their questions and answers to the class.
5.Explain the use of possessive pronouns to replace possessive adjectives and objects. Remind students that pronouns replace nouns to avoid repetition, e.g.
‘This is my book. It is mine.’
‘These are her pencils. They are hers.’
Provide more examples using familiar classroom items.
6.Explain the context. Make sure Ss understand the idea of fact sheets.
7.Ask Ss to complete the gapped sentences using possessive adjectives and pronouns.
Step 4. Part C
1. Go through the examples carefully. Illustrate the idea of something belonging to someone as explicitly as possible. Ask several questions about objects belonging to students in the class, e.g.
Is this your bag? (No, it’s Simon’s bag.)
2. Explain the context. Ask students to work out the correct possessive form for the owner of each item.
3. Check answers as a class. Ask a more able student to write the answers on the board so that others can check that they have placed the apostrophes correctly.
4. Ask Ss to name as many of the other items as they can, and say who they belong to, e.g. “The wallet is Simon’s.”
5. Ask Ss to work in groups of five to continue the conversation using the remaining items.
Step 5. Homework
Finish Wb Exx.
Preview Integrated skills.
