■ Warming up
Good morning, class! What were you doing yesterday evening? Were you watching TV or doing your homework?
Yesterday evening I was watching TV. I was reading a story. What were you doing last night? Were you reading an English book?
Now we shall go to page 46 to see what they were doing yesterday evening.
■Language practice
Yesterday evening my father was watching TV.

1 Play the game. Work in groups of six. Find the thief.
On page 46, you see three pictures. What do you see in each of the pictures? Now, in groups of six, try to play the game, finding out the thief.
Policeman: What were you doing at nine last night?
Student A: I was doing my homework at home.
Policeman: What were you doing at nine last night?
Student B: I was sitting by the Fen River with my parents.
Policeman: What were you doing, Mr. Wang, at nine last night?
Mr. Wang: I was running for exercise, out of breath, on the playground.
Policeman: What were you doing, Liu Xiangdong, at nine last night?
Liu Xiangdong: I was going shoping with my parents.
Policeman: But your parents were not in the city then. They were on holiday in Japan.
Liu Xiangdong: I was swimming in the lake, then.
Policeman: No, you were not swimming. You were the thief. You took away Wu Jie’s computer at nine last night.
2 Write down what each member of your group was doing.
1 Sun Li was making dinner.
2 Student A was doing his homework at home.
3 Student B was sitting by the Fen River with her parents.
4 Mr. Wang was running for exercise, out of breath, on the playground.
5 Liu Xiangdong was going shoping with his parents.
3 Complete the sentences with the correct form of the verbs in brackets.
4 Underline the correct form of the verb.
There are two verbs in each of the four sentences on page 47. Read them and underline the correct form of the verb.

Now we have come to Around the world. Please listen to the passage first, paying attention to the pronunciation, stress, and the intonation of the native speakers.
For the second listening, try to read aloud the passage to the tape while listening.
Now let’s go on to read the passage Famous books in English. While reading try to cut(断句)/ the sentences into parts, blacken(涂黑) the predicates, shade(加影) the connectives and underline (划线)the expressions.

11 Use your notes to write the story.
It was raining and I was waiting at the bus stop when a car stopped and the driver opened the door.
It was Britney Spears! Then she said "Would you like going with me to the lake?” “Why are we
going to the lake?” asked I. She told me that the water in the lake was rising rapidly because of the
rain. We had to go there to help build up the dam.
We arrived in time to offer our help.
There were lots of people there. They were carrying earth and stones to the dam. We took part in
the work. We worked so hard. Then the rain stopped. The sun came out. We felt happy. We started
back home.
