Several safari camps operate as the base for this adventure, providing unique rides twice a day to explore deep into the delta. The camps have excellent horses, professional guides and lots of support workers. They have a reputation for providing a great riding experience. The morning ride, when the guides take you to beautiful, shallow lakes full of water lilies, tends to be more active. It is unlike any other riding experience. With rainbows forming in the splashing water around you and the sound of huge drops of water bouncing off your body and face,it is truly exciting. You are very likely to come across large wild animals, too. On horseback it is possible to get quite close to elephants, giraffes and many other animals. The sense of excitement and tension levels rise suddenly though, as does your heart rate, as you move closer to them. In the evening, rides are usually at a more relaxed and unhurried pace, with golden light streaming across the grassy delta and the animals coming out to eat and drink. Sedate as they are, rides at this time of day are still very impressive. As the sun’s rays pass through the dust kicked up by the horses, the romance of Africa comes to life. Back at the camp you can kick off your boots and enjoy excellent food and wine. I’m so sorry I’m late.” Connie Chung was one of the only four women anchors (主播) to make it into the club of major evening network television news. For almost an hour we talked about the industry. When I asked if she ever had an instructor throughout her trials, she turned around and offered to instruct me. When I asked why she decided to do it, she simply replied, “Because you’re good.” That afternoon I rushed home and told my mother what had happened. Without looking up, she just said “Good for you.” Hearing this, I felt a sense of loss. Her consistent response always made me feel under-appreciated. Until then I had been searching for something that I would never get—that sense of love and acceptance in a house full of negativity (消极). I knew I needed to get rid of all the negativity in my life first, so I packed my bags and walked out of the house, thinking a risk would allow me to open myself to the world again and receive all the positive energy that I needed. Then radio became my way of connecting with others. My ability to book high-level guests and celebrities(名人)was gradually recognized and eventually all the words of encouragement from past guests and colleagues helped me to re-build my confidence levels. “I can do this,” I kept telling myself, and pushed even harder to find my next aim. People had faith in me, so I developed faith in myself. Their positive attitudes towards themselves and towards me helped me develop my own positive attitude, leading to productive interactions with celebrities and adding to my list of instructors. I may not have started life surrounded by positivity but I surely feel that I am surrounded by it now. It’ s amazing how positivity builds on itself. 1、What was the author probably doing at the beginning of the text? A.He was preparing for a show. B.He was looking for an instructor. C.He was waiting to be interviewed. D.He was broadcasting news in the studio. 2、How did the author’s mother react when told about Connie’s decision? A.She felt excited. B.She didn’t believe it. C.She was very grateful. D.She didn’t take it seriously. 3、Why did the author leave home? A.To broaden his view. B.To escape punishment. C.To keep away from negativity. D.To set up a home of his own. 4、What can be the best title for the text? A.The Strength of Positivity B.My Goal in Career C.My Ability in Management D.The Friendship Between Anchors 24.(8分)With the average American going through more than 700 pounds of paper per year, many firms are looking for ways to discourage their employees from over-using the office printer. Toshiba American Business Solutions has come up with an alternative idea. It has introduced the e-STUDIO4508LP, a printer that gives users the option to print with erasable toner (墨粉)一 allowing a single piece of paper to be reused several times. To reuse a piece of paper, the printer basically uses the same process as a normal printer, but in reverse (反过来),said Bill Melo, chief marketing executive for Toshiba America Business Solutions. Paper printed with the erasable toner is fed back into the printer, superheated, and the toner gets removed and put in a discard (丢弃)tank. There are a couple of catches. All of the printouts using the erasable toner have to be in blue ink, which is the only color in which erasable toner is now available. And the company said that people may want to stop reusing the printouts after five times through the eraser because small traces of erased text will build up over time. The $15,420 printer is aimed at offices and schools, where there are often large numbers of printouts that outlive their usefulness quickly. With the erasable toner, it’s possible to load any short-lived handouts back onto the printer to be erased and then reused. Still, convincing customers to commit to erasable toner isn’t always easy. Melo said not all its customers were happy about only having the erasable option. The model, Melo said, should better serve the needs of those who want to be environmentally conscious but also may need something more permanent on occasion. 1、What’s special about Toshiba’s printer? A.It’s low-priced. B.It’s fashionable. C.It’s lightweight. D.It’s eco-friendly. 2、What’s the key to making the printer work? A.A discard tank. B.Light colored ink. C.Special writing paper. D.A high enough temperature. 3、What does the underlined word “catches” in Paragraph 4 mean? A.Theories. B.Problems. C.Differences. D.Characteristics. 4、How did the public respond to the printer? A.They asked for more patterns. B.Some expressed dissatisfaction. C.Some worried about its recycling. D.They considered it hard to operate. 25.(10分)If you’re on the hunt for something new and interesting to read, you have plenty of places to go. This week, we’re looking at four of the best book recommendation sites, services, or groups, based on your nominations(提名). GoodReads GoodReads is more than just a book recommendation site, although it excels at helping you find new books to read based on the ones you enjoy. You can build a virtual “shelf” of books you own or have already read, share your progress with the books you’re currently reading, rate the books you’ve read, leave reviews, and connect with other readers. BookBub While BookBub isn’t strictly a book recommendation service, it does bring you super-low-cost books based on your interests every day. The service is free, and when you sign up, you tell BookBub what kinds of books you like to read. From there, you’ll get an email from BookBub every day with book deals for that day. When we say “deal,” we mean it—many of BookBub’s titles are free entirely, $0.99, or just a couple of bucks. LibraryThing LibraryThing has been around for a long time and is still a great user-powered book ratings, review, and recommendation site. The service calls itself the world’s largest book club, and that’s a lot like the overall feel. Once you sign up, you’ll be encouraged to start adding books you’ve read and leave reviews for them. Behind its book ratings and reviews though, LibraryThing is a powerful tool to catalog and organize your entire book collection. Olmenta If you’re not interested in registering for accounts, adding your own books, or any of that hassle(麻烦), Olmenta can suggest some solid titles to you based on general popularity and the citation of the people behind the site. It’s a simple list of book covers that the service thin
