Danny Meyer, CEO of Union Square Hospitality Group, is about to join their ranks and has announced that he plans to gradually stop tipping at the company’s 13 restaurants. What, exactly, is wrong with tipping? As Brian Palmer has explained, more or less it’s everything. To start, leaving a waiter’s pay in the hands of customers has a feeling of classism (阶级歧视).And in theory, handing restaurant customers the power to tip is at least supposed to motivate better service. This fails in practice because humans turn out to be pretty arbitrary (随意的) about their tipping behavior. Research has shown that the amount diners tip has very little to do with their level of satisfaction. All of this doesn’t encourage waiters and waitresses to do anything but turn over as many tables as possible. Tipping is also very unfair to kitchen staff. The law allows restaurants to divide tips between front-of-the-house workers like waiters, hosts, hostesses, and bartenders (调酒师), but not cooks. This creates a system in which the people serving the food in a restaurant can earn more than the people preparing it. One of the most fascinating parts of Meyer’s move is that, unlike some restaurant owners who have taken an anti-tipping stand, he won’t simply add a standard extra charge to diners’ bills. Rather, Union Square Hospitality Group means to raise menu prices enough to fully cover the cost of a meal. If Meyer manages to move away from tipping at all without hurting his profits, it would almost certainly set the stage for others to follow suit. 1、What’s Danny Meyer’s attitude towards stopping tipping? A.Negative. B.Supportive. C.Objective. D.Doubtful. 2、What can be inferred from Paragraph 2? A.Tipping may disturb the restaurants’ management. B.Tipping will guarantee diners high quality service. C.Tipping can arouse the staff’s enthusiasm for work. D.Tipping will bring customers a sense of satisfaction. 3、What can we know about Union Square Hospitality group? A.Brian Palmer is in charge of it now. B.Its cooks earn much more than its servers. C.Restaurant tipping has been totally banned there. D.Diners will be charged more for the dishes there. 4、What is the topic of the passage? A.Restaurants’ getting rid of tipping. B.Difficulties that restaurants are faced with. C.The popularity of no-tipping restaurants. D.Tips on running restaurants successfully. 22.(8分)It took multiple weddings for Christine Law to realize what she needed to do. In the summer of 2014, her schedule was packed with friends, marriage celebrations—flowers --- filled occasions that got her thinking, “Where do all the flowers go after the party?” More often than not, they were thrown out. Law, then 27, was confident she could find a better use for them. By August, she had a plan: convince couples and companies hosting events to donate their flowers, which she would pick up and deliver within 48 hours to seniors across the city. She wanted to bring beauty into the lives of the elderly. She drew on her experience volunteering with non-profits in order to set up her own organization, which she called Floranthropie. Not having enough bouquets (花束) for all 150 people of a health center, Law asked the staff to provide a list of patients who needed cheering up most, “The first woman I approached thought it was a mistake, and that the flowers couldn’t possibly be for her,” says Law. “I said they were a gift, and we talked for a half hour.” In addition to health centers, Floranthropie focuses on community groups devoted to the elderly. Theleme is a volunteer for Les Petits Fieres, an organization that aims to help the elderly who don’t have a support system. The group receives a dozen or so bouquets from Floranthropie monthly, and then redistributes them. “Our motto is ‘flowers before bread,” says Theleme. “We don’t focus on primary care, but rather on nourishing (滋养) the spirit. Floranthropie helps that. It’s amazing what a big difference a small bouquet can make.” In the beginning, most of Floranthropie’s donations came through word of mouth. These days, Law receives messages from strangers via her organization’s Facebook page and has connected with corporations and flower wholesalers. Law hopes to expand Floranthropie nationally, but at this point is happy to be able to oversee each delivery personally. 1、What made Christine Law set up Floranthropie? A.The Waste of flowers. B.The loneliness of seniors. C.The persuasion of other friends. D.The warm atmosphere of weddings. 2、What was the woman’s first reaction to Christine Law’s flowers? A.She was moved. B.She was excited. C.She was worried. D.She was surprised. 3、What can we infer about Floranthropie from Laetitia Theleme’s words? A.It should focus on primary care. B.It is benefiting more than the elderly. C.It is doing something of great importance. D.It should cooperate with more non-profits. 4、What is the best title for the text? A.Volunteer Your Time B.Don’t Throw Them Out C.Special Delivery Makes Your Day D.Brighten Seniors’ Lives With Flowers 23.(8分)1. TrueC Top dealers compete for your business by offering lower prices. And if you believe in eating fries with your burger, you should worry more about carbon emissions. It won't happen overnight, but as the planet's climate changes, the growth cycles of main crops will all be heavily affected .Here are three of the crops that might not beat the heat. The potato actually needs a great deal of beauty rest to develop properly. “They need a cool nighttime temperature in order to start growing the tuber, the part that we eat,” Nelson says. Temperature and altitude are two primary concerns in coffee growth, and farmers are stuck between a rock and a hard place. “We know that coffee grows in a certain temperature range,” Nelson says. “They've been moving up the mountains, but at some paint you run out of mountains to move up.” Higher-grade strains of Arabica coffee in Central American regions are at particular risk due to the need for lower growing temperature, especially since diseases and pests are also becoming more of a factor as temperatures rise. Even if you're looking at the direct effects of temperature alone, rice is in trouble. “As nighttime temperatures go up ,the rice is going to have a problem flowering and won't make as many seeds,” Nelson says. In addition to this direct heat consequence, rising sea levels will flood many rice fields and destroy water salinity levels, while droughts will lower production, raise prices, and further shame westerners who are too clumsy with chopsticks to be able to clear their plates once a new grain is adopted. 1、What is the closest meaning to the underlined word “emissions” in Paragraph 1? A.Mixture. B.Pollution. C.Going down. D.Letting off. 2、What does the potatoes' development need according to Nelson? A.Enough water and salt. B.Cool temperature at night. C.Much sunshine and fresh air. D.Sudden rise of the temperature. 3、The rice is difficult to flower, probably because______. A.sea levels go up suddenly B.the temperature rises at night C.many seeds can't be produced D.both temperature and altitude rise 4、What is the best title for the text? A.How Does Global Warming Affect Westerners B.How Does The Cool Temperature Affect Ride C.What Is The Real Reason For Crops' Growth D.Three Crops That Won't Survive Minor Climate Changes 25.(10分) This is the most exciting kayaking expedition(皮划艇探险)possible for beginner kayakers. You can expect to experience a whole range of different conditions and scenery. This expedition is a total of 8. 27 km in distance and it actually enters the streams in the North of Ubin and exits in the South. Three and a half kilometers of pure mangroves(红树林), makes this the longest pure mangrove kayaking expedition in Singapore. The distance spent inside the mangrove gives you the maximum opportunity to witness wildlife within the mangrove ecosystem. Come experience the challenge of operating your kayak through the labyrinth(迷宫)of waterways and be amazed at the calm and quiet beauty of the wetlands. This last corner of natural wilderness in Singapore is so inaccessible, that very, very few have ever experienced it-which makes this a truly special program. Most Recent Traveler Reviews Traveler A: Traveled from bottom to top of Singapore in rush hour traffic in order to get to Ubin for a 9:30 start—only to find no guide there. Although, once he arrived, the guide was lovely—offering a very knowledgeable tour and lots of enthusiasm around a beautiful part of the world—our 6-hour kayaking trip was actually over before 2:30 pm, despite only hitting the water at 12 noon. Traveler B: The guides were nice, however the biggest disappointment was the timing. We thought we were going for a 4-hour kayak but were back in 2 hours and that included the prekayak safety talk. The mangroves are lovely but we were told that a storm was near. We felt that there had never been any intention of going out for longer. 1、What is special about the kayaking trip for
