Being good at mathematics may be entirely pre-destined—you either have it 16 you don’t. And those who find 17 difficult to add up the number shouldn’t feel too hopeless—mathematical talent does not appear to be linked to all-round intelligence. Previous research has indicated that "number sense" is 18 (base) to humans. We use it to estimate such things as 19 number of seats in a cinema or crowd sizes. U.S. psychologists at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore made their finding after testing children too young to have been taught mathematics. During the study, 200 four-year-olds 20 (study) in terms of number senses, calculation skills and vocabulary. The verbal test was done for the reason 21 language and maths abilities are thought to be 22 (close) linked through general intelligence. "Unlike 23 previous studies proved, this one shows that the link 24 number sense and maths ability is already present before the beginning of formal maths instruction. As I was finishing my meal, an elderly couple came in to dine. They were holding hands and had lovely smiles on their faces. They sat three tables from me. I was amazed at the love they showed for each other. It seemed to strike home all the more, because it was shortly after ending a 20-year marriage and I still had pain in my heart. My waiter was also their waiter. As I paid my bill, I inquired as to what their bill was. He informed me, and I gave him $40 to pay their bill.  He asked if I knew them and I told him "No, I just wanted to repay them for the love that they were showing to each other," and then I departed. The next day I entered the restaurant to dine before my departure. After I had been seated, the waiter who served me the night before told me that the strangest thing happened after I left the restaurant. When the elderly couple went to pay for their meal, they were informed that it had been paid. When they inquired who had done this, the hostess told them they had no idea who I was, just retelling what I said. The couple were amazed. They looked around, asked for the bill of two young couples who were seated together, paid their bill and departed, saying "Love begets Love" to the amazement of the hostess and waiter. I smiled and said "That's nice," and proceeded to order my meal. About 45 minutes later, I finished my meal and was about to head out, but my waiter was nowhere to be found. I waited and waited and finally walked over to the hostess stand and explained that I needed to pay for my meal and hurry to the airport. She smiled and explained that I would not have to pay for my meal, because both the waiter and she felt compelled to pay my bill due to the joy that was brought to the faces of the elderly couple and the amazement of the young couples. When I told her that they didn't have to do that, she said with a smile "Love begets Love." 26. The writer’s purpose of writing the passage is to . B. Where there is love, there is life. C. As a man sows, so shall he reap (收获). D. Love me, love my dog. B What is politeness? This sounds like a simple question. In daily life, we often make judgments about what is polite and what is not polite. For example, to offer your seat to the elderly on a bus is considered polite behavior, and to interrupt when someone is talking is considered impolite; to greet someone the first time you meet him in the morning is polite and to stand up to reach for the dish you want at a dinner table is impolite. So politeness can first of all be regarded as a phenomenon, an observable social phenomenon. What I would like to propose is that as an observable social phenomenon, politeness is something superficial, but to account for what is understood at the surface, we should dig into the depth where different cultural values are rooted. When being complimented (赞美), an English-speaking person would readily accept the compliment by saying something like "Thank you" to show his appreciation of the praise, but a Chinese speaker would try to deny the truth of the compliment. They both think they are behaving properly. Yet neither of them would think the other is being polite. The English speaker is being polite to the extent that by accepting and showing appreciation of the compliment, and he avoids hurting the positive face of the person who makes it; the Chinese speaker is showing modesty by denigrating himself, ignoring the fact of the compliment paid to him. As has been mentioned, self-denigration has been at the core of the Chinese understanding of politeness for over two thousand years. The Chinese, in order to show modesty, will go to such lengths as to underrate what he himself has achieved and deny the truth of a complimentary remark. 31. According to the first paragraph, politeness can be briefly described as_____. A. proper social phenomena B. being modest C. showing appreciation D. an observable social phenomenon 32. In the author's opinion, the nature of politeness lies in ________. A. something superficial B. what is understood at the surface C. different cultural values D. the root of different thoughts 33. English-speaking people are reluctant to accept compliment. C. Chinese tend to show politeness and modesty by denying the truth of praise. D. Chinese people think highly of British politeness while English people think poorly of Chinese politeness. 35. What’s the author’s attitude towards Chinese politeness? A. Approving. B. Objective. C. Optimistic. D. Critical C CHINA’S first pure electric vehicle, BYD e6, went on sale in Shenzhen yesterday. The latest product for BYD, a domestic pioneer in developing alternative-energy vehicles based in Shenzhen, the e6 combines state-of-the-art technology developed in a joint venture (合资企业) between BYD and the U.S.-based Daimler, Shenzhen Economic Daily reported yesterday. The e6 carries a price tag of 369,800 yuan (US$56,030), according to BYD, which expected to sell about 300 e6s each month in Shenzhen. Prospective buyers, however, will only have to pay 249,800 yuan for an e6, because in July last year, the city government started providing an extra 60,000 yuan subsidy to buyers of pure electric cars on the basis of a national subsidy of 60,000 yuan. According to the manufacturer's Vice President Lian Yubo, the BYD e6 possesses several examples of world-class technology, including intelligent keyless entry, voice recognition navigation system, on-board digital television, rear-view reverse camera and other accessories (附件). With the application of iCloud technology, motorists will also be able to use their iPhones or other mobile phones running an Android system to unlock and lock the car, control air conditioning, as well as monitor the location of the vehicle. Lian said BYD and Daimler would cooperate to release more electric vehicles. Powered by recyclable and environmentally friendly iron-based batteries produced by BYD and using 19.5 kwh of electricity per 100 km with no emissions, the e6 is capable of a maximum speed of 140 km per hour, the paper said. The car can run up to 300 km without a recharge. It will take only one hour to recharge the e6 batteries to their full capacity at a charging station but five to six hours will be needed for a full charge at charging stands installed in parking lots. D SAN FRANCISCO — In the western U.S., Hawaii and elsewhere across the globe, moon watchers were treated Saturday to a rare celestial phenomenon: a total lunar eclipse (月全食). For about 50 minutes starting at 6:06 a.m. PST, the moon was completely blocked by the Earth's shadow. With only some indirect sunlight able to reach it after passing through the Earth's atmosphere, the moon took on a reddish glow. Since the atmosphere scatters blue light, only red light strikes the moon, giving it a dark red color. Dally Sam, who runs a public relations firm in Hawaii, said it had been cloudy and rainy, but the weather cleared just in time for the eclipse. Around 3 a.m., he awoke, as he usually does, and remembered to step outside the house in time to catch the eclipse about a half hour later. No one else in the neighborhood was up. "It was turning that dark red color," Sayre, 47, said, "I’d better grab a camera. To be able to see it just right outside our house was really cool." At the local observatory in Los Angeles, some 300 people, many clutching coffee cups in the cold morning air, sat with blankets and chairs on the observatory's great lawn. "It's really a
