Unit 2 Growing Pains
Period 6 Project Writing an advice letter
The analysis of this part:
This section is designed to help Ss improve their English through doing a project. The two letters in Part A are for Ss to read and find out what has happened between the father and his son, in which they talked about the problems happening to the family and ask for help. After knowing the purpose of the letters and mastering the language points, Ss will turn to writing a reply to the letters.
Teaching aims:
1. Make sure Ss know about an advice letter.
2. Improve Ss’ writing ability.
3. Encourage students to do teamwork and learn to cooperate with each other.
4. Ask Ss to cooperate with others.
Teaching Important and difficult points:
1. To know the general idea of the two letters.
2. Make sure Ss know how to write an reply to an advice letter.
Teaching methods:
1. Get students to know about some useful information about a sample project by reading
2. Ask students to do teamwork to finish the project.
3. Let students search some useful information about the project and write down important information.
4. Encourage students to make group discussion to know how to give advice.
Teaching procedures:
Step one: Presentation
First talk about the advice letters and ask Ss to read the guidelines on Page 38 and know what an advice letter is.
Step two: Reading
1. Let Ss read the first letter written by the father. Ask them to find out the answers to the following questions:
1)Why does the father write the letter?
To ask for some help so as to help his son.
2)What does the father think about his son?
His son disobeys everything his parents ask him to do; he is rude to them; he refuses to spend time with them’ he refuses to do his homework’ he spends too much time watching DVDs, listening to foreign music, chatting in Internet cafes, playing games and surfing the Internet.
3)What is the father worrying about ?
His son may fail at school or worse.
2. Ask Ss to read the second letter, which is written by the son and then answer the following questions.
1) Why does the son write the letter?
To be helped with some problems he has at home.
2) What are his problems?
His father does not listen to him when he wants to do something or suggests an idea; he shouts at him when he tries to talk to him; when he refuses to listen to his father, his father tells his mother and they fight like crazy; his parents always make him do things he doesn’t like; they call him selfish and unloving when he wants to be alone; his father gets very angry when he plays foreign music; he sends him to bed or tells him to study when he watches a DVD; he forbids him from meeting his friends at the Internet café.
3) How does he feel about his father?
He loves his father a lot. He hopes his father can understand him better and respect the things he wants to do.
Step Three: Writing an advice letter
1. Planning
a) Ask Ss to work in groups of four.
b) Ask Ss to discuss the four questions given in this part.
What main problem does the father have?
What main problem does the son have?
What are the possible answers for the father?
What are the possible answers for the son?
c) Ask Ss to decide which ways should be included in the letter they are going to write.
d) Ask Ss to assign roles to each of them and write their names beside the following jobs.
Research the style: an advice letter should be written in___________________
Write an outline for the letter____________________________
Write the letter_________________________________
2. Preparing
a) Those who responsible for finding examples of advice letters can look at the resources as follows:
Magazines Newspapers
Internet sites TV shows for teenagers
b) The group members will discuss the information found and decide how to write the letter and then make a draft of the outlines of the advice letter.
3. Producing
a) Ask Ss to write the letter by following the outline.
b) Proofread the draft and write the letter, which should be approved by the whole group.
4. Presenting
a) Choose one member to read the letter in front of the class.
b) Answer the questions the other groups have about their letter.
c) Display their letters on the wall of the classroom.
Step four Practice writing
Ask Ss to finish writing on page 101.
Step five Language Focus
1. as though= as if
① 用在look, smell, taste, sound, walk后面,议论可能、真实的事情。如:
It looks as if it is going to rain.
② 用虚拟语气
Mary loves the baby so much as if she were his mother.
He looked as if he had known the answer.
③ 可以跟不定式连用或分词连用。 如
The patient opened his mouth as if to speak.
He stared at the boy as if seeing him for the first time.
2. insist on
①~+ n./ v-ing/ one’s v-ing/
He insist on seeing her home.
They insist on/ upon my staying at their home.
②~ that …
从句中表示将来的动作或状态,谓语动词用should + 动词原形,should可省略。
如果表示现在/过去的事实用陈述语气,谓语动词不用should。如:
The workers insisted that they (should) be paid equally.
The boy insisted that he had not done that and (should) not be punished.
3. suggest 建议,暗示
① ~ + n. /v-ing
He suggested an early start to us. =He suggested to us an early start.
He suggested us starting early.
② ~+ that… 用虚拟语气,谓语动词用should + 动词原形,should可省略。
It is suggested that….
He suggested that we (should) start early.
It is suggested that we (should) start early.
4.like crazy 通常在句中作状语
Don’t work like crazy.
5. spare adj. in one’s spare time
Vt. Can you spare me a few minutes? I have something important to tell you.
6. forbid----forbade---forbidden
①Forbid doing sth. /sb to do sth./sb. into doing sth.
The government forbids hunting and killing wild animals.
He parents forbid him to enter/from entering the Internet café.
② forbid sth. to be done
The librarian forbad these books to be taken out of the reading-room.
