But you asked why we talk about the weather to strangers. That's an interesting question. It's probably because the weather is a safe subject to talk about.
W:It's a way of reaching agreement.
M:Ah yes. I begin by saying, “A cold morning, isn't it?”The other man says,“It certainly is.” I say,“It's been cold all week.” And the other man says,“Yes, we're having a very cold spring.”
W:So far you've agreed about everything.
M:Yes,then we're beginning to feel friendly. But if we start with subjects on which disagreement is possible, politics, for example,we might not have become friendly. 10.What will happen if strangers talk about politics?

Wildlife faces threats from habitat destruction, pollution, and other human actions. Although protecting wildlife may seem too hard at times, even small actions in your own neighbourhood can help protect many different animals. Here are some tips on how to protect wildlife through small actions.

Could I have your attention, please? Thank you.
As I told you yesterday morning, this afternoon is our shopping afternoon. If you look on the back page of your tour programme, you'll see a little map of the city centre, with the names of some of the shops marked. As you won't have too much time, I'm just going to explain to you what they sell.
We're now in the Friendship shopping centre. On your right is Larp's, a very good place for shoes and boots, rather than gloves, bags, clothes or others.Opposite that is LiNing, a good place for sports goods. Not cheap, but really pretty. Next door to LiNing is a place for books. They have got books on almost every subject anyone has ever written about, airplanes to animals, but Chinese only-so none of your English books, I'm afraid. If you walk along, there are shops which sell cameras, radios, and so on, which you won't buy,I'm afraid. If you are tired or would like to have a nice cup of afternoon tea,I suggest Splendid Tea Shop, where you can have British afternoon tea, with very good homemade cakes, chocolates and others. The shop is two blocks away from here, but within walking distance.
(Text 10)
China's trains will become faster than ever in April as the travel time between Beijing and Shanghai is reduced from 14 hours to just 12 hours.
The railway system has been sped up for four times since 1997. And this time, on April 18, 2004,trains will travel at the speed of 160 kilometres per hour (kph) and above on tracks across the country. This new highspeed rail service will cover 7,700 kilometres of tracks across China.
The Ministry of Railways is already planning a sixth speedup for 2005, with some trains expected to reach 200 kph.
Meanwhile, plans are still in place for the 120 billion yuan, 1,300kilometre, highspeed BeijingShanghai railway. It is expected to shorten the travelling time between the two cities to less than five hours.
When trying to make your garden more beautiful, you can choose plants that can provide food and shelter to native wildlife. This will also help cut down on pollution. Add bird or bat houses to your yard or garden to attract and shelter these species.
(2)Avoid harming the natural ecosystem in your area.
Some plants from other places can kill or harm native plants that provide food and shelter for wildlife.
(3)Save_water_and_energy_as_much_as_possible.
By using less water and fewer fuels, you will be helping to protect the wildlife around you. Take buses or the subway when you can, turn off electric devices (电子设备) when you're not using them, take shorter showers, and keep your room temperature at or below 28 degrees during the winter.
(4)Buy products that are wildlifefriendly.
Don't buy products that are made from endangered animals. Keep in mind that some endangered animals are killed by traps, catches or hunters who are after other wildlife within the same habitat.
(5)Donate money or time to organizations that protect wildlife and their habitats.
You can give money to organizations or groups that protect wildlife species in your neighbourhood.

Sometimes, the simplest ideas are the best. For example, to absorb heat from the sun to heat water, you need large, flat, black surfaces. One way to do that is to build those surfaces specially, on the roofs of buildings. But why go to all that trouble when cities are full of black surfaces already, in the form of asphalt (柏油) roads?
Ten years ago, this thought came into the mind of Arian de Bondt, a Dutch engineer. He finally persuaded his boss to follow it up. The result is that their building is now heated in winter and cooled in summer by a system that relies on the surface of the road outside.
The heatcollector is a system of connecting water pipes. Most of them run from one side of the street to the other, just under the asphalt road. Some, however, dive deep into the ground.
When the street surface gets hot in summer, water pumped through the pipes picks up this heat and takes it underground through one of the diving pipes. At a depth of 100 metres lies a natural aquifer (蓄水层) into which several heat exchangers (交换器) have been built. The hot water from the street runs through these exchangers, warming the ground water, before returning to the surface through another pipe. The aquifer is thus used as a heat store.
答案
21.D 作者意图题。根据第一段的 Here are some tips on how to protect wildlife through small actions. 可知文章的写作目的是给我们一些建议,告诉我们怎样通过细小的举动来保护野生动植物。
22.A 细节理解题。根据文章第一句“Wildlife faces threats (威胁) from habitat destruction, pollution...”以及第四点的“some endangered animals are killed by traps, catches or hunters...”可知作者提到了B、C、D三项的内容,作者并没有提到动物疾病。
23.D 细节理解题。根据第一点的“Add bird or bat houses to your yard or garden to attract and shelter these species.”可知D正确。
In winter, the working system is changed slightly. Water is pumped through the heat exchangers to pick up the heat stored during summer. This water goes into the building and is used to warm the place up. After performing that task, it is pumped under the asphalt road and its remaining heat keeps the road free of snow and ice.
24.Which of the following is true according to the first two paragraphs?
A.Arian de Bondt got his idea from his boss.
B.Large, flat, black surfaces need to be built in cities.
C.The Dutch engineer's system has been widely used.
D.Heat can also be collected from asphalt roads.
25.For what purpose are the diving pipes used?
A.To absorb heat from the sun.
B.To store heat for future use.
C.To turn solar energy into heat energy.
D.To carry heat down below the surface.
26.From the last paragraph we can learn that ________.
A.some pipes have to be rearranged in winter
B.the system can do more than warming up the building
C.the exchangers will pick up heat from the street surface
D.less heat may be collected in winter than in summer
27.What is most likely to be discussed in the paragraph that follows?
A.What we shall do if the system goes wrong.
B.What we shall do if there are no asphalt roads.
C.How the system cools the building in summer.
D.How the system collects heat in spring and autumn.
C
Zoos have been around for centuries—and they've changed a lot over the years. In the Middle Ages, wealthy people kept animals in their gardens. Public animal parks appeared in European cities in the late 1700s and early 1800s. The Philadelphia Zoo, the first in the United States, opened in 1874.
Until a few decades ago, most zoos were organized by creatures—monkeys in one area, cats in another, birds somewhere else, just like museum collections. In recent years, zoos have instead begun grouping animals that would normally interact (互相作用) in the wild. Moreover, instead of closing animals behind bars, designers are creating landscapes like the environments in which these creatures would naturally be found. Nearby signs provide information about the animals and their habitats in parts of the world where they normally live.
The Denver Zoo's new Predator Ridge exhibit, for example, aims to teach visitors about Africa. Eight acres of land provide homes for 14 animal species, including lions, porcupines, cranes, and wild dogs. Plants from the_region grow alongside Africanlike landform. Tenfoottall mounds (土墩) give lions a place from which to survey their surroundings, just as they would do in the wild.
Landscape design makes visitors to the Denver Zoo's Predator Ridge exhibit feel like they're really in Africa.
Animals in Predator Ridge can't actually be mixed with one another, for safety reasons. But hidden deep channels and other smart features allow visitors to see all the animals at once. Different species can see each other too.
28.What is the passage mainly about?
A. The safety problem of zoos.
B. The living habits of zoo animals.
C. Changes of zoos over the time.
D. Protection of zoo animals.
