Big brothers tend to look out for their counterparts, and despite the occasional rocky moment here and there, many siblings enjoy life-long close relationships. However, a new study finds an interesting downside: children with older brothers take longer when it comes to developing language skills. Conducted by a group of researchers in Paris, France, the study builds upon prior research that had already established that having older siblings is associated with poor linguistic development. Now, researchers say they have refined those findings to come to a more specific conclusion: only children with an older brother exhibit these linguistic difficulties. It is assumed that children with older brothers would grow up around more conversation on a daily basis, thus speeding up their language development. Yet researchers say such children actually take longer than their older brothers to begin developing these skills. According to researchers, they studied more than 1,000 children from birth to the age of five-and-a-half years old. Each child's language skills were tested at ages 2, 3, and 5.5, using tests specially designed to measure numerous aspects of language development such as vocabulary, syntax, and verbal reasoning. What the research team discovered was significant: children with an older brother had, on average, a two-month delay in their language development compared to studied children with an older sister. As far as explaining this phenomenon, researchers have proposed two hypotheses. The first is that older sisters tend to talk more often than older brothers, which would compensate for parents potentially being less present than they were for their first child. The second hypothesis is that older sisters usually compete with their siblings less than older brothers for their parents' attention. As of now, the study's authors say they can't say for certain why children with older brothers have a harder time developing language skills. In the future they would like to investigate if culture or location impacts the prevalence of these results. 25. According to the passage, what does the underlined word in Paragraph 1 mean? C When Medicine Hat, a city in southern Alberta, Canada, promised to put an end to homelessness in 2009, there were many people doubtful about it. A good six years later, the city says it has fulfilled its promise with the help of a surprisingly simple idea: giving every homeless person a home with no strings attached. While traditional housing programs ask that potential participants shouldn’t have crime record and seek psychological treatment before they are admitted into the system, the Housing First approach makes the homeless free from such things. Whoever is in need of a permanent place to stay will get help, no matter what their circumstances are. “ we thought that people are worthy of a home and it is a fundamental human right to have a shelter and a roof over their heads,” Jamie Rogers, who ran the Housing First program in Medicine Hat told the BBC.“Of course it is recovery-oriented and we help and support people in making different choices in their life, but we don’t withhold (抑制) housing because of who they choose to be.” Since April 2009, the community of about 65,000 collectively housed 1,013 homeless individua1s: 705 adults and 30 children. Apart from the obvious success of getting people out of the street, Housing First also brought with it a number of unexpected positive effects. In Medicine Hat, emergency room visits and run-ins with police have dropped while at the same time court appearances went up. Once people felt that somebody cared about them, they gathered the necessary motivation to begin dealing with their past in a positive way. Medicine Hat didn’t just carry out Housing First (which is also being used in other cities with varying levels of success) but rather changed its whole approach to homelessness. Rather than building, or relying only on subsidized (补贴的) housing, the city built a relationship of trust with landlords, property management companies, and local communities as a whole. Fear and prejudice towards the homeless have been replaced by the realization that they are simply people down on their luck and nowadays landlords call up city hall to offer their apartments to the program. Medicine Hat’s inspiring success proves to us all that if we put aside our fears and differences and instead come together as a community, nothing is impossible. 28. What can we know about the homeless in Medicine Hat? A. They needn’t sleep in the street any longer. B. Most of them have been offered shelters C. They only need to pay a little for the shelters D. They have gained great help from local charity. 29. Compared with the traditional one, the Housing First approach . A. houses the homeless with fewer requirements B. gives the homeless shelters regardless of their backgrounds C. cares less about the homeless people's crime record D. cares more about the homeless people's psychological health 30. What didn’t Medicine Hat expect when carrying out the Housing First approach? A. The work would cost so much money. B. The task would take so much time. C. Public security would improve. D. Conflicts among people were nearly removed 31. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell about? A. Medicine Hat’s work summary. B. Medicine Hat’s achievements. C. Medicine Hat’s plan for the future. D. Medicine Hat’s working with police D The essential factor of success or failure—at work and in life—is selfawareness, the ability to understand who we are, how others see us, and how we fit into the world. For millions of years, the ancestors of humans evolved painfully slowly. However, about 150,000 years ago there was an explosive development in the human brain where, among other things, we gained the ability to examine our own thoughts, feelings and behaviors, as well as to see things from another’s point of view. Not only did this transformation create the foundation for art, spiritual practices and language, but it came with a survival advantage for our ancestors, who had to work together in order to survive. Though we may not face the same daytoday threats to our existence, selfawareness is no less critical. There is strong scientific evidence that people who know themselves and how others see them are happier. They are smarter, superior students. They raise more mature children. They also tend to be more creative, confident and less aggressive. But for most people it is easier to choose selfdelusion(自我欺瞒) rather than the cold hard truth. Our increasingly “me” focused society makes it easier to fall into this trap. Recent generations have grown up in a world obsessed with selfesteem(自负), constantly being reminded of their special qualities. Not only are our assessments often flawed(有缺陷), but we are usually terrible judges of our own performance and abilities—from leadership skills to achievements at school and work. What's scary is that the least competent people are usually the most confident in their abilities. How can we avoid this fate? We must work on two specific types of insight. Internal selfawareness is an inward understanding of our passions and aspirations, strengths and weaknesses and so on. And external selfawareness, knowing how others see you, means understanding yourself from the outside. It would be easy to assume that someone with internal selfawareness would also be externally aware—that being in touch with our feelings and emotions helps us turn into how we're seen. Strangely, research has often shown no relationship between the two— some studies have even revealed an inverse(相反的) one. For those looking to gain true insight, remember that other people often see us more objectively than we see ourselves and that selfexamination can have hidden pitfalls(陷阱) that make insight actually impossible. 32. The first three paragraphs center around ________. A. the significance of selfawareness in human survival and advancement B. the sharp contrast between selfawareness of today and the past C. the necessity of a shift in selfawareness to satisfy the needs today D. the intellige
