Unit1 Friendship Reading:Anne’s Best Friend Teaching contents This lesson’s teaching content extracts from New Senior English For China Student’s Book 1 (People Education Press), Unit 1 Friendship:Anne’s Best Friend. It tells us Jewish people’s poor life during the World War II from Anne’s perspective. The first lecture of unit 1:Warm-up,pre-reading,reading,comprehending. Background information Students have masted some certain English and history knowledge, and most of them are interested in learning English, but students who live in an age of peace may have difficulty understanding Anne’s experiences and feelings. Therefore, background information and transpositional thinking are important for them to understand Anne’s Best Friend, and teacher must help them build correct moral values. Lesson duration: 40mins Teaching objectives 1. Knowledge objectives. ①Students will be able to learn background information about Jewish people’s poor life during the World War II from Anne’s perspective; ②skim and scan the whole text and find out needed information(main idea; Anne’s feelings; nature); ③work out the changes of Anne’s feeling, and read the text fluently. 2. Skill objectives. ①Students will be able to improve their reading skills: skim the passage to know the main idea and structure of the text, scan the passage to understand the detail and specific idea of the passage and to answer some questions about the text; ②explore the implied meaning of the passage(love peace/freedom; war is cruel). 2. Emotional objectives. ①Students will be able to feel the cruelty of the World War II and German Nazis, and show sympathy to Jews like Anne and her family; ②be eager for peace, freedom and nature of those who lose freedom; ③realize the importance of treasuring what we have today, like friends, teachers and family. Teaching methods Task-based Teaching Method, Communicative Teaching Method, Audiovisual Teaching Method. Learning methods Task-based Learning Method, Communicative Learning Method, Cooperative Learning Method. Teaching key points Anne’s living background and condition, main idea and detail information in Anne’s Best Friend. Teaching difficult points Process and reasons for the change of Anne’s feelings, reading skills: scan, skim and explore. Teaching aids Textbook, PPT, blackboard, chalk. Teaching procedures Step1: Warming up(3mins) 1. Listen to the music. 2. Questions to discuss: Do you have good friends in your life? Why do we need good friends? Does a friend always have to be a person? What else can be your friends? Step2: Leading in.(5mins) 1. Introduce Anne as a friend to students. 2. Introduce Anne’s living background information. Step3: Fast reading. (7mins) 1. Who is Anne’s best friend? 2. Fill in the chart. Step4: Careful reading. (18mins) 1. Discuss in groups to get main idea of each paragraph. 2. Fill in the table about Anne’s feelings and nature. 3. Discuss: What’s your feeling if you were Anne? What information can we get from these changes? 4. Read after the tape and correct pronunciation. Step5: Discussion and summary.(5mins) What have you learnt from this class? Step6: Homework(optional activities)( 2mins) 1. Retelling.(Fill in the blacks) 2.
