Promise to be there for any and all doctor's visits whether a disease or a regular medical check-up. Most mothers always say "no need," another set of eyes and ears is always a good idea at a doctor's visit. The best part? This one is free. Gift No. 2 Help your mother organize all of her medical records, which include the test results and medical information. Put them all in one place. Be sure to make a list of all of her medicines and what times she takes them. "Having all this information in one place could end up saving your mother's life," Dr. Marie Savard said. Gift No. 3 Enough sleep is connected to general health conditions. "Buy your mother cotton sheets and comfortable pillows to encourage better sleep," Savard said. "We know that good sleep is very important to our health." Gift No. 4 Some gift companies such as Presents for Purpose allow you to pay it forward this Mother's Day by picking gifts in which 10 percent of the price you pay goes to a charity (慈善机构). Gift givers can choose from a wide variety of useful but inexpensive things — many of which are "green" — and then choose a meaningful charity from a list. Riding his yellow motorcycle, which he calls Kindness One, he is attempting to travel around the world on nothing but the kindness of strangers. No money. No food. Nowhere to stay. Logothetis is counting on the generosity of the human spirit to keep him going. “It’s all about inspiring other people and being inspired myself,” Logothetis spoke of his passion project today on “Good Morning America”. So far, he has achieved continuous success. In Las Vegas, a family gave him food and a place to sleep. In Nebraska, cowboys let him stay with them on their ranch (大牧场). “The American people have been absolutely fantastic,” Logothetis said. And in Pittsburgh, after a dozen people turned him down, Logothetis met Tony, a homeless man who shared his food and let Logothetis sleep with him in a dilapidated (破旧的) garage. “It was so inspiring for me,” Logothetis said. “The people in Pittsburgh hadn’t really helped me but he offered me a place to stay. He gave me food, he gave me some clothes, and he inspired me.” So just how far can kindness get you? Logothetis is determined to find out. “I used to be a broker (经纪人) in London, sitting behind a desk, working 12 hours a day, and it wasn’t for me,” he explained. “Then I went and traveled around the world and connected with people. And that’s what it’s all about. That’s where the magic is: connection. Heart to heart.” On his blog, Logothetis says he’ll board a ship from New York to Europe, adding he’ll do so “as a non-paying passenger”. He also lists an itinerary (旅行) that would lead him to travel to France, Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, Greece, India, Bhutan, Cambodia and Vietnam, among other countries. His journey will be filmed as a TV show. The trip also serves to raise awareness about and raise funds for Make a Wish International. 5. What’s the author’s main purpose in writing the passage? A. To encourage people to travel. B. To tell us a special traveler’s story. C. To raise money for a charity organization. D. To advise us to treat people around kindly. 6. What do we know about Logothetis? A. He owns a ranch. B. He is a film producer. C. He is a host of a TV show. D. He enjoys connecting with people. 7. Which of the following is the most suitable one to describe Logothetis? A. Sensitive. B. Modest. C. Dependent. D. Courageous. 8. We can infer from Paragraph 6 that Logothetis ______. A. was satisfied with his work B. was fond of traveling with people C. preferred his true interest to his previous life D. got a new job that required fewer working hours C A schoolgirl saved her father’s life by kicking him in the chest after he suffered a serious allergic (过敏的) reaction which stopped his heart. Izzy, nine, restarted father Colm’s heart by stamping (踩) on his chest after he fell down at home and stopped breathing. Izzy’s mother, Debbie, immediately called 999 but Izzy knew doctors would never arrive in time to save her father, so decided to use CPR. However, she quickly discovered her arms weren’t strong enough, so she stamped on her father’s chest instead. Debbie then took over with some more conventional chest compressions (按压) until the ambulance arrived. Izzy, who has been given a bravery award by her school, said: “I just kicked him really hard. My mum taught me CPR but I knew I wasn’t strong enough to use hands. I was quite scared. The doctor said I might as well be a doctor or a nurse. My mum said that Dad was going to hospital with a big footprint on his chest.” “She’s a little star,” said Debbie, “i was really upset but Izzy just took over. I just can’t believe what she did. I really think all children should be taught first aid. Izzy did CPR then the doctor turned up. Colm had to have more treatment on the way to the hospital and we’ve got to see an expert.” Truck driver Colm, 35, suffered a mystery allergic reaction on Saturday and was taken to hospital, but was sent home only for it to happen again the next day. The second attack was so serious that his airway swelled, preventing him from breathing, his blood pressure dropped suddenly, and his heart stopped for a moment. He has now made a full recovery from his suffering. 9. Izzy kicked her father in the chest ______ . A. to express her helplessness B. to practise CPR on him C. to keep him awake D. to restart his heart 10. What’s the right order of the events? Izzy kicked Colm. Debbie called 999. Izzy learned CPR. D You may not have heard of Ashoka,, but for the past 27 years, this association, founded by Bill Drayton, has fought poverty (贫穷) and sickness, promoted education and encouraged small businesses. To support these worthy causes, Ashoka provides money for the world’s most promising “changemakers” seeking to solve (解决) urgent problems and would like to create a world in which every citizen is a changemaker. Drayton believes that anyone can become an agent for change. The important thing is to simply give yourself permission. If you see a problem that you care about, you can help solve it. The young in particular are willing to accept this concept because at heart every child wants to grow into a happy, healthy, contributing adult. In fact, it is many young people’s ambition to set up programmes or businesses that improve social conditions. An excellent example is an Ashoka project started in 1995 in Dhaka, which handled the rubbish problem facing the city, helped local farmers and provided an income for poor people there. When Masqsood and Iftekhar began to study the problem of all the uncollected rubbish that lay in Dhaka’s streets, attracting rats and disease, they discovered that 80% of it was natural waste. So they educated the poor people in the city to compost (把……制成堆肥) this waste. They knew that they would have a market for the end product because local farmers were struggling with chemical fertilisers (化肥) which were expensive and had reduced the natural minerals in the soil over the years. At first, they were refused, but once they were able to persuade them that there was money to be made, the project took off. In 2009 sales were $14,000. Drayton is optimistic that in ten years Ashoka will be making really serious, practical progress in bringing about social change by changing the way we look at economic development. 12. Which of the following could be the best title for the passage? A. Changegemakers B. Businessmen C. Social Conditions D. Rubbish Problem 13. The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 probably refers to “ .” A. the local farmers B. Masqsood and Iftekhar C. Drayton and his team D. the poor people in Dhaka 14. It can be concluded from the passage that anyone can become a changemaker if he . A. considers Drayton’s concept B. gets permission from Ashoka C. tries to improve social conditions D. is a young, happy and healthy adult 15. The author’s attitude towards Ashoka’s program can be described as . A. changing B. forgiving C. cautious D. positive 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Tips for Cooking on a Tight Schedule From my experience, there are three main reasons why people don’t cook more often: ability, money and time. 16 Money is a topic I’ll save for another day. So today I want to give you some wisdom about how to make the most of the time you spend in the kitchen. Here are three tips for great cooking on a tight schedule: 1. Think ahead. The moments when I think cooking is a pain are when I’m already hungry and there is nothing ready to eat. So think about of the coming week. When will you have time to cook? Do you have the right materials ready? 17 2. Make your time worth it. When you do find time to cook a meal, make the most of it and save yourself time later on. Are you making one loaf of bread? 18 It takes around the same amount of time to make more of something. So save yourself the effort for a future meal. 3. 19 This may surprise you, but one of the best tools for making cooking worth your time is experimentation. It gives you the chance to hit upon new ideas and recipes that can work well with your appetite and schedule. The more you learn and the more you try, the more ability you have to take control of your food and your schedule. Hopefully that gives you a good start. 20 and don’t let a busy schedule discourage you from making some great changes in the way you eat and live! A. Try new things. B. Ability is easily improved. C. Make three or four instead. D. Understand your food better. E. Cooking is a burden for many people. F. Let cooking and living simply be a joy rather than a burden. G. A little time planning ahead can save a lot of work later on. 第二部分:英语知识运用 第一节:完型填空(共20小题,每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,掌握其大意,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上涂黑。 Even though it was only October, my students were already whispering about Christmas plans.
