Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn't matter whether the words come from someone else or ourselves — the positive (good) and negative (bad) effects are just as lasting. We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We're usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldn't be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit. This “selftalk” helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of selftalk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We_should_also_be_quick_to_give_ourselves_a_pat_on_the_back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!” Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner. Or harsh and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be angry. Words possess power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn't pass this test, then it's better left unsaid. Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build selfrespect and encourage others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours. 1.There is no need for us to feel embarrassed when we talk to ourselves because ________. A. almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves B. we can benefit from talking to ourselves C. talking to ourselves always gives us courage D. it does no harm to have “selftalk” when we are alone 2.The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also timely ________. A项正确。 3.The author would probably hold the view that ________. A. Selftalk always has positive effects on us. B. We are fond of admitting talking to ourselves. C. Nice words help to build up one's confidence. D. The effect of good words lasts longer than bad words. B Last week, my granddaughter started kindergarten, and I wished her every success. But part of me didn't. I actually wanted her to fail in some ways because I believe that failure can be good for our learning process. Success is proving that you can do something that you already know you can do, or doing something correctly the first time, which can often be a problematic (存在问题的) victory. Firsttime success is usually a fluke (侥幸). Firsttime failure, by contrast, is supposed to be the natural order of things. Failure is how we learn. In Africa they describe a good cook as “She who has broken many pots.” If you've spent enough time in the kitchen to have broken a lot of pots, probably you know a fair amount about cooking. I once had dinner with a group of cooks, and they spent time comparing knife wounds and burn scars. They knew how much credibility (可信) their failures gave them. I earn my living by writing a daily newspaper column. Each week I am aware that one column I write is going to be the worst column. I try my best every day. I have learned to cherish that column. A successful column usually means that I am discussing my familiar topic, writing in a style I am used to or saying the same things as anyone else but in a fancy way. My younger daughter is a trapeze artist. She spent three years putting together a show, and she did it successfully for years. There was no reason for her to change it but she did anyway. She said she was no longer learning anything new and she was bored. And if she was bored, there was no point in subjecting (使……听从于) her body to all that stress. She risked failure and great public embarrassment in order to feed her soul. My granddaughter is a perfectionist. She will feel her failures, and I will want to comfort her. But I will also, I hope, remind her of what she learned, and how she can do better next time. I hope I can tell her, though, that it's not the end of the world. Indeed, with luck, it is the beginning. 5.Why did the author want his granddaughter to fail? A. Success is boring though beneficial. B. She would learn more from failure. C. It's impossible to do everything successfully. D. He wanted her to be strong enough to face hardships. 答案与解析 B 从第一段第三句中“failure can be good for our learning process”和最终一句“Failure is how we learn. ”可知,B项正确。 6.What's the author's attitude toward his daughter changing her show? A. Negative. B. Worried. C. Positive. D. Ambiguous(模棱两可的). 从最终“with luck, it is the beginning”可知。C项正确。 7.The author develops the article mainly by ________. A. giving examples B. following the time order C. comparing different opinions D. presenting a cause and analyzing its effects 答案与解析 A 文章其次段列举了一群厨师的例子;第三段列举了自己写专栏的例子;第四段列举了自己女儿的例子,所以A项正确。 8.The writer talked about his own experience to show that ________. A. we cannot depend on luck to live a good life B. we should try every possible way to avoid failure C. past failures made him dare not take risks in writing D. the thought of failure will make you work even harder 答案与解析 D 从第三段其次、三句可看出,作者每周都会发觉自己写的专栏是最差劲的一个,这使得他“try my best every day”。D项正确。
