Zhang Kemin tried his hardest to resist becoming a professional musician like his grandfather, the late Chinese conductor Li Delun (1917~2001).
“I was rebellious.Almost everyone in my family is a musician and I wanted to be different.” says Zhang,36,who has learned piano, violin and viola since childhood. He took on a variety of jobs to distract him from music, from working in venture capital firms to comedy clubs.
But he has found himself in music nonetheless, and recently he played piano to accompany US soprano(女高音) Kerry Holahan, kicking off The Spirit of America Tour, organized by American Cultural Center Tours' Ping Pong Productions in association with Li Delun Music Foundation.
More than 200 people,Chinese and expatriates, packed the library of the Beijing American Center. They performed songs by Broadway legend Cole Porter, including Night and Day and Anything Goes, and told stories about the composer's life.
“We became friends a long time ago.He is very nice and funny. When I made mistakes during a performance,he will say it's his fault,” says Holahan, who moved to Beijing as an exchange student 10 years ago.
Zhang and Holahan will tour universities around China, spreading their love of Broadway music to Chinese audiences.
“My aunt told me that the project I am doing is just like what my grandfather used to do,” Zhang says.“He used to go around with a cassette player and a stack of tapes, and gave lectures about classical music everywhere, from universities to factories. He enjoyed classical music so much that he loved sharing his knowledge with people in the hope that they can learn to appreciate it,too.”
Zhang and his parents moved to Toronto,Canada in 1990.When he returned to Beijing,he stayed with his grandparents. It is an old apartment in the capital's downtown area and it is where he was born and raised.
Located near the China National Symphony Orchestra, the apartment block is home to many of China's great musicians, including Li and his violinist wife Li Jue (1922~2021).
“That's me,around 2 years old, sitting in my grandfather's arms,” says Zhang, pointing to a black-and-white photo,in which he is wearing a pair of big headphones and waving his tiny arms like a conductor.

If you have ever wondered what Noah's Ark,the huge boat that saved Noah, his family and two specimens of every animal genus that inhabited the earth, may have looked like, you are in luck. That's because a Dutchman has created a life-size replica, with a slight modern-day twist!
Johan Huibers says he was inspired to build the boat after he dreamt that his native country of Netherlands was completely flooded! The carpenter began by creating a smaller version of what he likes to call Johan's Ark in 2004.
Not surprisingly,it was an instant hit with tourists, both local and foreign.Encouraged by the success,he used the funds generated from ticket sales of the smaller version, and in 2009 recruited(聘请) his two children and some friends,to build a version the same size as the one specified in the Bible.Johan and his team ended up with an Ark that measures an impressive 427 feet(130 meters) long,95 feet(29 meters) across and 75 feet (23 meters) high.
As for the animals? While the area inside is big enough to allow two real elephants,Johan has restrained that impulse! Instead,he has populated it with plastic substitutes of the mammal and also giraffes, zebras and even buffalos—All life-size of course! But smaller species like chickens, sheep and rabbits got luckier—They are all alive and seem to be enjoying their life inside the Ark's “petting zoo”.Johan's Ark is also home to an array of exotic birds—All alive and chirping(鸣叫声)!
The only issue with this amazing replica that docks in a small river in Dordrecht,Netherlands is the ability to actually sail off! That's because unlike the biblical version, this one is made from steel and weighs 3,000 tons.Still,it is pretty cool and the best news is that Johan is hoping to take it to other parts of the world too,if he can find a bigger boat to transport it on.

What makes a gift special? Is it the price you see on the gift receipt? Or is it the look on the recipient's face when they receive it that determines the true value? What gift is worth the most?
This Christmas I was debating what to give my father. My dad is a hard person to buy for because he never wants anything.I pulled out my phone to read a text message from my mom saying that we were leaving for Christmas shopping for him when I came across a message on my phone that I had locked. The message was from my father. My eyes fell on a photo of a flower taken in Wyoming, and underneath a poem by William Blake. The flower,a lone dandelion standing against the bright blue sky, inspired me.My dad had been reciting those words to me since I was a kid. That may even be the reason why I love writing.I decided that those words would be my gift to my father.
I called back.I told my mom to go without me and that I already created my gift.I sent the photo of the cream-colored flower to my computer and typed the poem on top of it.As I was arranging the details another poem came to mind. The poem was written by Edgar Allan Poe;my dad recited it as much as he did the other.I typed that out as well and searched online for a background to the words of it.The poem was focused around dreaming, and after searching I found the perfect picture. The image was painted with blues and greens and purples, twisting together to create the theme and wonder of a dream. As I watched both poems passing through the printer, the white paper coloring with words that shaped my childhood,I felt that this was a gift that my father would truly appreciate.
Christmas soon arrived. The minute I saw the look on my dad's face as he unwrapped those swirling black letters carefully placed in a cheap frame,I knew I had given the perfect gift.
