When Luca first heard of the story of the Island of Inventions,he was still very young. But its wonders sounded so incredible that they were forever burned in his memory. From that moment,he never stopped searching for clues which might lead him to the island. He read hundreds of adventure books, histories, volumes of physics and chemistry, and even music.
Over time,he pieced together his idea of what the Island of Inventions was like.It was a secret place, where all the great wise men of the world would meet to learn and invent things or ideas together.Access to the island was totally restricted. To join, you had to have created some great inventions for humanity.Only then could you receive the special invitation, which came with directions to the island.
So Luca spent his youth studying and inventing things or ideas.Every time he got a new idea,he made it into an invention, and if there were something he didn't understand,he'd seek help from others.Soon he met other young inventors and he told them about the Island of Inventions. They dreamed of one day receiving an invitation letter too.
As years passed, the disappointment of not receiving the invitation made Luca and his friends work harder and co-operate more. They would meet in Luca's house, share their ideas and build new machines.Their inventions became known throughout the world, and improved the lives of millions.
But still,no invitation came.
They didn't lose heart. They continued learning and inventing things or ideas every day, trying to come up with more and better ones.Fresh young talent joined their group,as many inventors dreamed of getting to the island.
One day, many years later,Luca, already very old,was speaking with a brilliant young man named Roberts, who had written to him, asking him to join the group.Luca started telling the man of the wonderful Island of Inventions, and of how he was sure that some day they would receive an invitation.Surprised, the young inventor interrupted:
“You mean this place isn't the Island of Inventions? Isn't the letter you sent me the real invitation?”
It was only then that Luca realised that his dream had become true in his very own house. No island could exist which would be better than where he was now.No place of inventions would be better than what he and his friends had created.Luca felt happy to know that he had always been on the island, and that his life of invention and study had been a truly happy one.

You and your friends are settling into your seats. The new Spider-Man movie is about to start and you've got the snacks:soda and popcorn.Food is part of what makes the movies fun.
Just as the lights go out,you catch a slight smell of...tuna fish! You turn your head, searching for the source. Then you spot him:A guy is enjoying a tuna fish sandwich. How'd he get that in here? You wonder. Then you remember how much you paid for your snacks.
What invites the unwelcome outside food is probably the price. Why pay $5 for a bag of M&MS when you can get them for a dollar at the corner store?
Earlier this year,a Michigan man decided to fight for his right to snack.Joshua Thompson is suing(起诉)his local theater after it banned outside food.He argues the ban breaks a Michigan law that prevents businesses from charging extremely high prices. However, most legal experts believe Thompson has little chance of winning his case, though he does have a point:85 cents out of every dollar of treats a movie theatre sells is pure profit.
The truth is that movie theaters are more in the snack business than the movie business.A huge part of the ticket income goes to the Hollywood studio. This makes sense, since the studios have to pay the costs of movie production and advertising. But that often doesn't leave much cash for the theater, which also has its own running costs. If customers stopped buying food, owners would have to raise ticket prices even higher.
Of course, there's another reason to think twice before bringing food into the movies:It's against the rules.Breaking those rules can have unpleasant consequences too. Some theaters will kick you out if they catch you.Even without the threat of punishment,we should follow rules all the time—out of respect.
Here's a good idea:Eat before the movie.

(2022·湖北七市月考)Leadership is the most significant word in today's competitive business environment because it directs the manager of a business to focus inward on his personal ability and style.Experts on leadership will quickly point out that “how things get done” influences the success of the outcomes and indicates a right way and a wrong way to do things. When a noted leader on the art of management,Peter Drucker, coined the phrase “Management is doing things right;leadership is doing the right things,” he was seeking to clarify the distinctions he associates with the terms.
When Stephen Covey, founder and director of the Leadership Institute, explored leadership styles in the past decade,he focused on the habits of a great number of highly effective individuals. His Seven Habits of Highly Effective People became a popular bestseller very quickly. His ideas forced a reexamination of the early leadership example, which centered on the feature that was found in the character ethic(道德)and the personality ethic. The former ethic suggested success was founded on modesty, loyalty, courage, patience, and so on.The personality ethic suggested it was one's attitude, not behavior, that inspired success, and this ethic was founded on a belief of positive mental attitude. In contrast to each of these ideas,Covey advocates that leaders need to understand universal principles of effectiveness, and he highlights how vital it is for leaders to first personally manage themselves if they are to enjoy any hope of outstanding success in their work environments. To achieve a desired vision for your business,it is essential that you have a personal vision of where you are headed and what you value.Business leadership means that managers need to“put first things first,” which implies that before leading others, you need to be clear on your own values, abilities, and strengths and be seen as trustworthy.
