SeaWorld Orlando has a new attraction. It exhibits nearly 250 penguins (企鹅). During my visit to SeaWorld Orlando, I talked with a bird expert (专家), Anita.
TFK:
Why did SeaWorld want to make an exhibition about penguins?
ANITA:
We've had penguins since 1987. But we wanted to build a great new exhibition where the guests can see the penguins up close and hear them. In the old exhibition you were separated by glass, so you couldn't really hear them. So this is a whole new experience.
TFK:
How are the penguins cared for?
ANITA:
We go and mainly observe them with our eyes and our ears. If one is sleeping more than normally or seems squintyeyed (斜视眼), we might have a vet (兽医) check on them. We also feed them every day with restaurantquality fish. We feed them in the water so that they're feeding naturally.
TFK:
In their lifetime, what trouble does the penguin have?
ANITA:
In their lifetime, penguins face predators (食肉动物), which they don't have here at SeaWorld. There are large ocean birds that would feed on the eggs or the chicks of penguins, as well as whales and sea lions.
TFK:
The ice in Antarctica (南极洲) is rapidly melting. What effect does this have on penguins?
ANITA:
As the water warms up, the fish that normally live in that cold water don't survive, or they move on, but the penguins really want that cold. So as global warming heats up. They really have no place to go since that is the coldest place on the Earth.
TFK:
How is SeaWorld helping to increase awareness (意识)about climate change?
ANITA:
Just be aware of your environment around you. Especially in the ocean, any animal can eat the plastic in the environment. It makes them sick and some of them die from it because they can't digest (消化) it. So just getting up on the beach, just cleaning the environment up, and just paying attention to what's happening around you.

C. feed on fish from Antarctica

One Sunday,Mark decided to go sailing in his boat with his friend Dan,but Dan happened to be away. Dan's brother John offered to go instead though he did not know anything about sailing. Mark agreed and they set out to sea.
Soon they found themselves in a thick fog. Mark was sure they would be hit by a big ship. Fortunately he saw a large buoy (浮标) through the fog and decided to tie the boat to it for safety. As he was getting onto the buoy, however, he dropped the wet rope. The boat moved away in the fog carrying John, who did not know how to use the radio. He drifted (漂流) about and was not seen until twelve hours later.
Mark spent the night on the buoy. In the early morning he fell asleep. He was having a bad dream when a shout woke him up. A ship, the Good Hope, came up and he climbed onto it and thanked the captain. The captain told him that John had been picked up by another ship and the ship's captain had sent out a message. “Without the message I would not have found you on the buoy,” he said.
4.Why didn't Mark and Dan go sailing together?
A. Dan asked his brother to go instead.
B. Dan was in some other place.
C. Mark was in some other place.
D. Mark would like to go with John.
答案与解析 B 由第一句“Dan happened to be away”推断Dan去了别的地方。
5.Mark tried to tie the boat to the buoy so that ________.
A. he could spend the night on it while John was looking for help
B. he and John could go sailing again when the fog cleared
C. it wouldn't be hit by other ships
D. he might be picked up by a passing ship
答案与解析 C 由其次段其次句看出,他想把小船拴到浮标上,是认为有可能被大船撞翻。
6.John and Mark became separated because ________.
A. there wasn't room for both John and Mark on the buoy
B. John couldn't control the boat and drifted away
C. Mark thought it safe to stay on the buoy but John didn't
D. John had to stay in the boat to radio for help
答案与解析 B 依据其次段后半部分可知,Mark在浮标上,而John随船漂流而去,结合第一段其次句话推断,是由于John不知道如何航海才导致这种结果。
7.What made it possible for Mark to be found on the buoy?
A. John told people where to look for him.
B. John radioed to the Good Hope to get him.
C. He shouted when he caught sight of the Good Hope.
D. The captain saw him as the fog cleared.
答案与解析 A 依据文章结尾可知,船长接到另一艘船的船长发来的信息,然后来救Mark。依据当时的情景推断,另一艘船的船长只能从John那里得知信息。
