The customs in different countries are rather different. If I have dinner with a Chinese host, he always puts more food onto my plate as soon as I have emptied it. That often discomforts(让……不舒适) me greatly. I have to eat the food even if I do not want to. I have also noticed that when a Chinese sits at an American’s dinner party, he very often refuses the offer of food or drink though he’s in fact still hungry or thirsty. This might be good manners in China, but it is not in the West at all. In the United States, it is impolite to keep asking someone again and again or insist on his accepting something. Americans have a direct way of speaking. If they want something, they will ask for it. If not, they will say, “No thanks.” When an American is served with beer by the host, for example, he might say, “No, thanks. I’ll take some orange juice if you have it.” That is what an American will do. So when you go to the United States, you’d better remember the famous saying: “When in Rome, do as Romans do.”

Started in 1636, Harvard University is the oldest of all the many colleges and universities in the United States. Yale, Princeton, Columbia and Dartmouth were opened soon after Harvard.

new subjects. Students were allowed to choose the subjects that interested

I recommend (推举) flying to Washington D.C., our nation’s capital. Like Beijing this is the heartbeat of America. While in Washington D.C. you should check out the White House, the presidential monuments, Ford’s Theater where Abraham Lincoln was assassinated (暗杀) and the US Capitol building, which is the home of the US government.
When you’re ready to leave Washington D.C., go to Chinatown and jump on a bus up to New York. These buses are really cheap and convenient.
New York is like a fantasy world where you can do almost anything! My friend from Thailand said the best Thai food she ever ate was in New York City. So eat as much as you can, see a show on Broadway and climb the stairs of the Statue of Liberty. If you really want an American experience, eat a hot dog while you watch a New York Yankee’s baseball game.
Now, because you are my friends, I will recommend to you one of the great secret places in America: New Hampshire (新罕布什尔州). Even though this is my home state, I am not biased (偏爱). New Hampshire is one of the most beautiful places in the world. In the fall, hike the White Mountains and be surprised at the bright red, yellow and orange leaves on the trees. In the winter, drink a warm glass of hot chocolate before you ski through freshly fallen snow. And in the summer take a boat out of Lake Winnipesauke and enjoy crystal clear water.
Actually, you’ll have a good time just about any-where.
8. Why does the writer think visitors should take a bus to New York?
A. Because the distance is short.
B. Because the trains are crowded.
C. Because buses are really cheap and convenient.
D. Because New York is like a fantasy world.
