Three years ago I noticed a strange advertisement, which read: “Discover your past lives. Phone Diane.” I had never heard of such a thing. A week later, I went to see Diane. She was in her 60’s but looked 30. She told me that she is an expert looking back at past times.
I sat in a chair as she darkened the room. Her tea made me sleepy. She lit a candle and told me to take a deep breath and count to 100. When I closed my eyes and counted to about 90, I fell asleep.
Suddenly I felt something hit my face. It was sand. I walked into a ruin. I called out. No one answered. I walked into a shop. I saw no one. I looked into a small piece of mirror and I saw myself: I had long brown hair and looked about 18. “No, it can’t be!” I cried out. In the dusty street I saw a sign showing the town’s name, Pompeii — my hometown. “Oh, my God! It must be a mistake!” I cried. What had happened here to bring about such destruction? I walked back to my parents’ home, and fell onto my knees in the ruins crying out for help.
“Marcus, get up. Don’t worry. I’m here to help you,” said my Uncle Petronius. I jumped up, threw my arms round him, and sobbed. “What happened?” I asked.
“A volcano destroyed the entire town, killing everyone including your mother and father! Come, my boy. There’s nothing here anymore. Let’s leave for Rome.” I walked out of the ruins with my uncle.
My last life had disappeared. I remembered Diane had put a narcotic (麻醉药) into my tea. Diane thanked me for coming to see her and then mentioned that her next appointment would be arriving soon. I left her place tiredly. To this day I still remember my “visit” to Pompeii.

Scientists have known for a long time about a link between chronic (慢性的) stress and obesity. But they couldn’t find the key factor in the past. Recently researchers at Georgetown University in Washington, D. C. made what they call a “perfect advance”.
Dr Zofia Zukowska says, “Thanks to our hard work of the past years we have actually discovered the exact reason why people get fat when they are stressed and eat a high fat, high sugar diet. And by knowing the reason, we can now deal with obesity.” Dr Zukowska and her colleagues put laboratory mice under the same type of stress they would experience in the wild such as meeting up with a more aggressive and dangerous mouse. They then fed these mice a fast food diet. The mice became fat.
What’s more, they found an increased amount of a chemical called neuropeptide Y, or NPY for short, in these mice, which is activated by stress and helps stimulate (刺激) the growth of fat cells. And the fat in mice grew around their middle, just as it does in humans. Middle fat is the most dangerous kind, as it affects the heart and liver, causing heart disease, adding to cholesterol (胆固醇) levels, high blood pressure, and so on. But the researchers found they could block the fat-causing NPY with another chemical, and thus could manipulate obesity effectively.
To their pleasant surprise, NPY seems to work in the human body much like it does in mice. If so, Dr Zofia Zukowska says it would be a major advance in the battle against obesity, which will be used to cure the patient of the disease caused by stress and obesity. However, the researchers say many more studies need to be done before human trials can begin. (FOR MORE INFORMATION, CLICK HERE.)

Chinese use chopsticks as easily and as naturally as Europeans use forks. They are like an extension of a man’s fingers.
There are different kinds of chopsticks. The Chinese chopsticks are round at the “eating end”, while the Japanese prefer those with pointed tips. There are even short ones for children to use. Chopsticks are made of many materials — ivory (象牙), plastic, silver, and even jade (玉) — but the most common ones are of wood or bamboo. For everyday use, wood, bamboo, or ivory is best. Plastic chopsticks are not satisfactory, since they become twisted after repeated immersion (浸泡) in hot washing water.
All Chinese food is prepared so that it may be easily handled with chopsticks. In fact, many Chinese families have no forks at all. Our fingers may become lazy from eating with forks. However, fingers really have to work in order to use these tools naturally. Practice is the key to success with these centuries-old tools.
Chopsticks are used for cooking as well as for eating. They are good for serving noodles, getting deep-fried foods, and beating eggs. One can even buy extra-long “cooking chopsticks”, which make these kitchen tasks even easier.

The Tang Dynasty was the golden age of Chinese poetry. In a period of almost 300 years, about 50,000 poems were composed and handed down. The development of Tang poetry went through four major periods: early Tang, high Tang, mid Tang and late Tang.
There are four distinguished poets from the early Tang period: Wang Bo, Yang Jiong, Lu Zhaolin and Luo Binwang. They gave Tang poetry new characteristics. As a result, the themes of the poems changed from the luxury of the palace to the lives of common people. One of the most outstanding poets during this time is Chen Zi’ang. He felt that poems should reflect reality and he helped to lay the groundwork for the development of Tang poetry.
Chinese poetry reached its peak in the high Tang. Li Bai and Du Fu probably had the greatest influences on writing at that time. Apart from Li Bai and Du Fu, many other poets also made enduring (不朽的) contributions in this period. These poets fell roughly into two categories: the landscape poets represented by Meng Haoran and Wang Wei and the frontier poets represented by Gao Shi, Cen Shen and Wang Changling.
Poetry of the mid Tang built on the creative output of the height of the Tang Dynasty. Works of this period mainly spoke of social turbulence (动荡) and people’s sufferings. Bai Juyi was famous as a realist poet of this period. He tried to make his language plain, smooth and lively so that more people could enjoy his poems.
The late Tang period saw the well-known poets Li Shangyin and Du Mu. Du Mu’s poems were fresh and cool and expressed his sadness and frustration in his official career. The other famous poets were Pi Rixiu, Nie Yizho
