What is the most important day of your life? For many people the answer is your Wedding Day —the day when you marry another person and promise to live together as husband and wife for the rest of your lives.
Wedding celebrations differ from country to country — in China the bride wears red whilst in India the wedding can continue for three days. However, in Britain the bride wears white and wedding usually only lasts for one day.
In the UK it is possible to get married in a religious or civil ceremony. A religious ceremony takes place in a church. A civil ceremony, on the other hand, can be held in a registry office, in a hotel, or even on a boat!
On the day of the wedding the bride and groom are kept separate until the ceremony. It is said to be bad luck if the groom sees the bride in her dress before the wedding.
The bride arrives at the ceremony accompanied by her father and bridesmaids. He officially gives her away to her new husband. During the ceremony the happy couple exchange vows and give each other wedding rings which they will wear forever. At the end of the ceremony they kiss.
Afterwards they go outside where friends and family throw rice or confetti (婚礼中抛撒的五彩纸屑) over them. Then they go on to the reception where there is a lot
of food and drink. After the meal the father of the bride and the best man (男傧相,伴
郎) make speeches. Then the bride and groom take the first dance. It’s a lot of fun.
Finally, at the end of the party the newly-weds leave to go on honeymoon, usually to a very romantic destination.

Foreign aid is an important part of international efforts to reduce poverty. The
United States Agency for International Development has an estimate of the amount
given since the early nineteen fifties. It says seventy countries have received more than one million dollars in payments and loans from western nations.
But does foreign aid work? Michael Radew is a researcher at the World Policy Institute in New York. He says foreign aid can lead to, in his words, “all the wrong economic policies that made those countries poor in the first place.” Minister Radew argues that it doesn’t help the majority of poor people in a country. Instead, he says, it strengthens the officials in power who are generally unelected.
Other experts say foreign aid has produced mixed results, depending on where and how the money is spent. They note successful examples like Taiwan and South Korea. The two have since become wealthy enough to give foreign aid themselves.
Steve Radelet is a researcher at the Center for Global Development in Washington, D. C. He says foreign aid is the least effective in countries like Somalia(索马里) and Haiti(海地) where governments are especially weak. And he says it is “highly risky” also in politically insecure(不可靠的) countries like Iraq and Afghanistan. But Steve Radelet says the world must continue to give money, even though some of it will disappear or be stolen.
United Nations experts agree that foreign aid faces difficulties in parts of the world without much democracy (民主). In southern Africa, poverty rates increased from forty-one percent in 1981 to forty-six percent in 2001.
The director of the Poverty Reduction Program at the World Bank notes the situation in sub-Saharan Africa. But Luca Barbone says foreign aid has done a lot to reduce poverty worldwide.
Yet because it is often stolen or misused, there are calls for new methods of giving. George Ayitey is a Ghanaian-born economics professor at American University in Washington. He says western countries should give less aid, but remove trade barriers so they import more goods from developing nations. Professor Ayitey also suggests that donor nations direct how they want their money spent.
60. According to Steve Radelet, why isn’t Haiti effective to receive foreign aid?
A. Because its government is not strong enough.
B. Because it is not secure in the countries.
C. Because it is rich enough in this country.
D. Because the money will be stolen in this country.
61 The writer mentions Taiwan and South Korea in the text to show ____.
A. no other countries can be wealthy except Taiwan and Korea
B. only Taiwan and Korea can be wealthy with foreign aid
C. if foreign aid is properly managed, it can make a country and an area wealthy
D. no more countries can be wealthy with foreign aid
62.Which of the following is the opinion of Luca Barbone?
A. How to spend the money for foreign aid should be directed by donor countries.
B. Foreign aid does help a lot to reduce poverty in the world.
C. The foreign aid must continue even if it doesn’t work.
D. Foreign aid leads those countries poor in the first place.
63.We can infer ____.
A. though with foreign aid some parts of the world become poorer
B. foreign aid calls for more proper methods to direct
C. westem countries should import more goods from developing countries
D. countries without much democracy can’t deal with foreign aid well

Mountains offer the high life
You’ve only been to one mountain, but you’ve traveled through four different countries!
It is in the Alps, the mountain range that spreads about 1,200 km across Austria, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and other countries in Europe. These mountains offer lots of exciting sports, cultures and food.
Sporting life
The Alps are sports heaven. There are activities for everyone, from beginners and onlookers to championship-level competitors.
During the summer, hiking in the Alps allows you to challenge yourself on endless trails(路线). And you needn’t climb the highest peaks to enjoy the freedom found in the silence of the woods. You can also find romance on a walk under a full moon, or enjoy the pleasures of a picnic in a sunny field full of wild flowers. Like to bike ? The Alps are home to many great trails with fast downhill rides—perhaps in the world’s most exciting terrain(地形).
Skiing is something that you can’t miss in the Alpine winter. Beginners can learn their skills with special lessons. The experts can experience complete freedom on wonderful slopes.
It’s possible to ski or ride for days, from village to village or from country to country. The land is so vast that you will never take the same slope twice. Once you have skied in the Alps, you will never be satisfied with any other mountains, ever.
Culture and arts
Here are friendly bars bursting with jazz music and world-famous operas and museum. The Alps are rich in history, tradition and culture. It would be impossible to describe all of the concerts, ballets and gallery(画廊)openings that happen during a single year. One of the best ways to experience the richness and depth of the artistic life is to attend any one of the many festivals.
Unique events include the Salzburg Festival, held in Salzburg, Austria. One of the most famous theatre and music festivals in the world, it runs from July through August.
Food and drink
The Alps can please every taste, with all sorts of dishes from Italian pasta (面食) to rich Austrian desserts. Vegetarians will be happy with wide variety of choices, while others will find it hard not to eat the creamy meat and mushroom-filled pies found in Switzerland. But everyone will appreciate the Alpine alcohol—either the fine wines in Italy, or the beers in Germany and Austria.
64. One thing that makes the Alps different from other mountains is that____.
A. even if you are not good at sports, you will have fun
