第八处为动词搭配错误,want to do 想要做某事,不可省略to。

21. Grandpa picked up several items and placed them on the counter (柜台). He told the clerk it would be on credit. The clerk was new and didn’t know Grandpa, though he had been coming to this same country store for 20 years.
“Sign here,” the clerk pointed to a piece of paper and said.
Grandpa took the pencil beside the paper and carefully marked an “X” on the dotted line.
“You’re supposed to sign your name,” she said.
Grandpa’s hand shook with the pencil. He was a tall man, thin with sandy blond hair and blue eyes. I hadn’t seen him so embarrassed (尴尬) before, especially in front of a teenager girl.
“I can’t read or write,” he said. “I’ve always signed with an ‘X’”. I could see he wanted nothing more than to get out of there.
I wasn’t sure what happened, but somewhere deep inside of Grandpa had been pricked. I went close to him and broke my Hershey’s bar in half.
“Want some?” I asked. He took it and bit into it. In spite of his smile, the sadness in his eyes said that chocolate wouldn’t make the pain go away.
Grandpa is no longer with us now, but I know he was never simply “Grandpa X”. He just didn’t know how to read and he thought it was too late in life for him to start. What I would want to tell Grandpa more than anything else, if I could speak to him today, is that it’s not too late. There are programs and people who are willing to help him learn to read and write. But the most important thing I’d say is that whether he could read or not, he was never just “Grandpa X” to me.
63. Which of the following statements about the writer’s grandpa is WRONG?
A. He didn’t know how to read or write all his life.
B. He felt embarrassed when the clerk asked him to sign his name.
C. He had always signed with an “X” in the country store before the new clerk came.
D. He was a hard-working man but slow at learning.
64. The underlined word “pricked” in paragraph 7 means _________.
A. ignored B. fooled C. hurt D. worried
65. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. It’s difficult for an old man to learn to read.
B. The writer’s love for his grandpa wouldn’t change.
C. The writer would have respected his grandpa more if he had learned to read.
D. You will be looked down upon if you can’t read or write.
根据最后一段中的“He just didn’t know how to read and he thought it was too late in life for him to start.”
根据文章第五段中的“I hadn’t seen him so embarrassed (尴尬) before, especially in front of a teenager girl.”和第六段中的“I could see he wanted nothing more than to get out of there.”以及第八段中的“In spite of his smile, the sadness in his eyes said that chocolate wouldn’t make the pain go away.”
根据最后一段中“But the most important thing I’d say is that whether he could read or not, he was never just ‘Grandpa X’ to me.”
22. Odland remembers like it was yesterday working in an expensive French restaurant in Denver. The ice cream he was serving fell onto the white dress of a rich and important woman.
Thirty years have passed, but Odland can’t get the memory out of his mind, nor the woman’s kind reaction . She was shocked, regained calmness and, in a kind voice, told the young Odland. “It’s OK. It wasn’t your fault.” When she left the restaurant, she also left the future Fortune 500 CEO with a life lesson: You can tell a lot about a person by the way he or she treats the waiter.
Odland isn’t the only CEO to have made this discovery. Rather, it seems to be one of those few laws that every CEO learns on the way up. It’s hard to get a dozen CEOs to agree about anything, but most agree with the Waiter Rule. They say how others treat the CEO says nothing. But how others treat the waiter is like a window into the soul. Watch out for anyone who pulls out the power card to say something like, “I could buy this place and fire you,” or “I know the owner and I could have you fired.” Those who say such things have shown more about their character than about their wealth and power.
The CEO who came up with it, or at least first wrote it down, is Raytheon CEO Bill Swanson. He wrote a best-selling book called Swanson’s Unwritten Rules of Management. “A person who is nice to you but rude to the waiter, or to others, is not a nice person,” Swanson says. “I will never offer a job to the person who is sweet to the boss but turns rude to someone cleaning the tables.”
28. What happened after Odland dropped the ice cream onto the woman’s dress?
A. He was fired. B. He was blamed.
C. The woman comforted him. D. The woman left the restaurant at once.
29. Odland learned one of his life lessons from ________.
A. his experience as a waiter B. the advice given by the CEOs
C. an article in Fortune D. an interesting best-selling book
30. According to the text, most CEOs have the same opinion about __________.
A. Fortune 500 companies B. the Management Rules
C. Swanson’s book D. the Waiter Rule
31. From the text we can learn that __________.
A. one should be nicer to important people
B. CEOs often show their power before others
C. one should respect others no matter who they are
D. CEOs often have meals in expensive restaurants
