Won’t we need science to produce enough food as the world population is growing to 9 billion by 2050? The answer to both questions is YES—but that science may look different than you think. We’ve been told that the only way we’ll be able to feed the growing population is through the science of GM(转基因)crops and chemicals. But the latest scientific studies are saying just the opposite. In study after study, the message about agriculture is: To feed the world, we need to support sustainable(可持续的)agriculture on different. Local, family farms that work with nature. In 2008, an international study found that sustainable agriculture, not GM crops, shows more hope of ending hunger. The International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science, and Technology for Development (know as the IAASTD), calls for a change of the world’s food and farming systems. The Assessment said that industrial agriculture has greatly destroyed the world’s soils and other natural resources, and now is doing harm to water, energy, and weather safety. The report warns that expensive, short-term ways—including GM crops—are not likely to cut down long-term hunger, and could even make environment and social problems worse in many places. A recent report by the UN Environment Program shows that food problems will become more serious because of environment problems and strongly supports sustainable agriculture on small family farms. It also showed that a worldwide change to organics could actually increase the world’s food production by as much as 50%--enough to feed a population of 9 billion people with the land we have now. GM crops, once popular, are now being questioned worldwide. 28. How can we feed the growing population of the world according to the passage? A. In expensive, short-term ways. B. By encouraging industrial agriculture. C. By developing small, organic agriculture. D. Through the science of GM crops and chemicals. 29. We can learn from the last paragraph that there will be no food problems if A. the world supports sustainable agriculture B. we increase a lot of farm land C. the environment problems are solved D. all the small family farms are used 30. Which of the following can best describe sustainable agriculture? A. the science of GM crops B. Working on small family farms. C. a fast way to increase the world’s food production. D. An approach to agriculture without harming the environment. 31. What might be talked about if there is one more paragraph? A. The causes of food problems. B. The disadvantages of GM crops. C. The development of industrial agriculture. D. The disadvantages of sustainable agriculture. 参考答案: CADB 22.     MUMBAI, India —The children in their party clothes on the stage were very excited when they received the award. And the two of them said, "It’s unbelievable!"      Nine-year-old, Rubina Ali, and Azharuddin Ismail, 10, were living a very different life and obviously loving every minute of it. The two, some of the child stars of the Oscar-winning Slum dog Millionaire(《贫民窟的百万富翁》)movie, know the Indian slums very well. That was where they grew up, and it is where they will return at the end of their Hollywood dream trip.      But before going back home, there was an interview with the host, Ryan Seacrest. During the interview they smiled and repeated their disbelief in what was happening to them. To their surprise, their movie won first place in the Oscars. When the two received the award, it was late morning in the children’s home city of Mumbai, where family, friends and many fellow residents of the slums watched the result from Hollywood.      "I don’t really know what the Oscars are," Rubina’s mother said. "I’m just glad my daughter looks happy, though she told me she missed Indian food."      "Our children lead a dog’s life," Rubina’s mother said, pointing out the rubbish everywhere, the open drains (下水道) and the lack of education opportunities.      In a few days they will be back in Mumbai and back in the slums which are their home. Fortunately, according to media reports, the movie’s director, Danny Boyle, has promised to help the children chosen from the slum and make sure they will go to a proper school.      The two don’t need to worry about their daily lives because of the Oscar success of Slum dog Millionaire. But the poverty and lack of opportunity —the central theme of the movie—is always all around. 67. Which of the following is NOT true about the two children? A. They were both excited about receiving the award. B. They had been having a difficult life in India. C. They were interviewed before they went back home. D. They were the only two child stars in the movie, Slum dog Millionaire. 68. What can we infer from the text? A. The two children have played in other movies before. B. Rinoms’s mother also went to the Hollywood. C. Rubina may not get used to the American food. D. They will travel to other countries before returning home. 69. What will happen to the two children after they return to India? A. They will go back to the miserable life. B. They will play in movies as famous actors. C. They will leave school to learn acting.  D. They will have a better education. 70. According to the author, the value of the movie is that ________. A. it has been given an Oscar Award B. it has made the two children famous C. it has become popular all over the world D. its central theme has become known to the public   参考答案:
