A man requested on a wise man to help his son quit his bad habits. The wise man took the boy for walk in a garden. Suddenly he stopped to ask the boy to pull out a tiny plant there. The boy hold the plant between his thumb and forefingers and pulled it out. The man then asked him to pull out another plant what was a little big. The boy pulled hardly and the plant came out. “Now pull out that one,” said the man point to a bush. The boy tried his best but couldn’t pull it out. “So it is the same with bad habits” said the wise man. “When you are weak, it is easy to pull them out, though when they become strong, they can’t be rooted.”
参考答案:
1.考查动词。动词request(要求)是及物动词,可以直接接宾语,故将on去掉.
2.考查冠词。固定词组:for a walk(去散步),故加a....
副词hardly(几乎不),而本句中应使用hard(努力地),故将hardly改为hard.
21. Have you ever wondered about people’s names? Where do they come from? What do they mean?
Some people give their children names that mean good things. Clara means “bright”; Beatrice means “one who gives happiness”; Donald means “world ruler”; Leonard means “as brave as a lion”.
The earliest last names, or surnames, were taken from place names. A family with the name Brook or Brooks probably lived near brook(小溪);Someone who was called Longstreet probably lived on a long, paved road. The Greenwood family lived in or near a leafy forest.
Other early surnames came from people’s occupations. The most common occupational name is Smith, which means a person who makes things with iron or other metals. In the past, smiths were very important workers in every town and village. Some other occupational names are: Carter — a person who owned or drove a cart; Potter —a person who made pots and pans.
The ancestors(祖先) of the Baker family probably baked bread for their neighbors in their native village. The Carpenter’s great-great-great-grandfather probably built houses and furniture.
Sometimes people were known for the color1 of their hair or skin, or their size, or their special abilities. When there were two men who were named John in the same village, the John with the gray hair probably became John Gray. Or the John was very tall could call himself John Tallman. John Fish was probably an excellent swimmer and John Lightfoot was probably a fast runner or a good dancer.
Some family names were made by adding something to the father’s name. English-speaking people added –s or –son. The Johnsons are descendants of John; the Roberts family’s ancestor was Robert. Irish and Scottish people added Mac or Mc or O. Perhaps all of the MacDonnells and the McDonnells and the O’Donnells are descendants of the same Donnell.

A. Places where people lived.
B. People’s occupations.
C. Talents that people possessed.
D. People’s characters.
61. According to the passage, the ancestors of the Potter family most probably _______.
A. owned or drove a cart
B. made things with metals
C. built houses and furniture

22. My grandfather came from Hungary and was the only one in his family who settled down in the United States. The rest of his family remained in Europe. When World War I broke out, he seemed to have become another man, downhearted. Such obvious change was not born out of concern for his welfare, but out of fear: if his only son, my uncle, had to go to war, it would be cousin fighting against cousin.
One day in 1918, my Uncle Milton received his draft notice. My grandparents were very upset. But my mother, at the age of 10, felt on top of the world about her soldier brother going off to war. Realizing how he was regarded by his little sister and all of her friends, my uncle bought them all service pins, which meant that they had a loved one in the service. All the little girls were delighted.
The moment came when my uncle and the other soldiers, without any training but all in uniforms, boarded the train. The band played and the crowd cheered. Although no one noticed, I’m sure my grandmother had a tear in her eye for the only son. The train slowly pulled out, but not about a thousand yards when it suddenly paused. Everyone stared in wonder as the train slowly returned to the station. There was a dead silence before the doors opened and the men started to step out. Someone shouted, “The war is over!” For a moment, nobody moved, but then the people heard someone bark orders at the soldiers. The men lined up in two lines, walked down the steps, and with the band playing, marched down the street, as returning heroes, to be welcomed home. My mother said it was a great day, but she was just a little disappointed that it didn’t last a tiny bit longer.
25. What the grandfather was most worried about was ______.
A. the spread of the world war
B. the safety of his two cousins
C. a drop in his living standards
D. his s killing each other
26. The underlined phrase “draft notice” means “______”.
A. order for army service B. train ticket for Europe
C. letter of rejection D. note of warning
27. What did the “service pins” (in Para. 2) stand for in the eyes of the little girls?
A. Strength. B. Courage.
C. Victory. D. Honor.
28. Which of the following words can best describe the ending of the story?
